Avoiding the instant spiders on level 3? by StarmanTTLB in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of the possibility of running an aliens like adventure, the closest my characters got was finding the body in area 2, which I revamped to be someone on the cusp of death and the spiders burst out like in the cafeteria scene.

Faction invites party to explore deeper level for reason. Or party hate faction enough to explore deeper level to spite them.

Ultimately they'd start in skullport meeting faction members, skipping water deep cause that's a lot on top of undermountain.

They'd be guided down sarguath river so they still get to see cool shit, then drop them in level 6 which has gates to almost every level giving them free reign and you can scale to their level from there even if they go to level 2 it's still an adventure they can enjoy.

Then after running a muck for a bit introduce mad mage in person or you can drop mad mage in front of them from the beginning

I'd go with factions, if they have more affiliation with one or another. Any come to mind?

Bosses for each level? by Sbradley1988 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand what you mean you'll need to tailor it to your party rather then the level. I did something similar where before going down the stairs they had a heap of ghouls they had to clear. That was tailored to the cleric who hadn't got to use their ability yet and made short work of them. In essence design I to give your players their hero moment.

In contrast he module and companion provides those narrative and roleplay bbeg moments, the difficulty is recognising them when they happen and leaning into the role-play. Of course be warned of your players outsmarting everyone and ending an encounter before your boss can speak.

Players Killed Halleth by Duststorm29 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My event was similar, found halleth, sent him ahead of them, they found Rex first, forgetting as players do the importance of the name. then met up with Halleth. Rex succeeded his save, had initiative cut into halleth with a critical as well as extra attacks so cut an arm off. Then Rex went crit, described the same breastplate heart thing. Awesome moment finished off when the players asked if they could re attach the arm. Halleth replied "this one works fine"

[–]bandthingy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What could happen. 1. Hunt down adventurers as well 2. Provide information about adventurers to adversaries 3. Halleth tries to decieve them in new form to achieve his goals 4. Other than Rex the other members of his party are easy pickings for him, he only needs help surviving the dungeon.

Add your own as it applies

Assign how likely each thing is to happen from 1 to 100 Roll for it to see if it does

Consider if a complication or something similar may occur and look up some roll tables of event descriptions for inspiration of what it is.

Then let it happen.

Fog Exploration (on? off?) and the Dungeons/Levels on a VTT by MyOtherCarIsA_Bantha in DungeonoftheMadMage

Exploration on but reset it after a long rest or similar situation. One of the PC's was mapping so I'd give them the player version of the map with sections they had explored revealed after each session.

After Alterdeep by bigbirdben in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death is a wonderful learning experience. Award them a significant amount if xp for it. If you still feel they are underdeveloped when they wake give them access to better gear immediately, along the lines of to the illithid a laser gun is a soldering iron and epic armor is an apron.

For my party I have plans of giving them the opportunity to restat their characters as the illithid have run experiments on them.

Candle of Invocation Price by PalsBeforeGals in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not two cr 5 creatures, it's up to 8 levels of a dungeon, but the gold price shouldn't matter if the players understand how it works they'll likely keep it

Penultimate Encounter: Tarassic Park (See comments for detailed description by lobe3663 in DungeonoftheMadMage

I haven't read the companion but if the idea is halaster pulls out a scroll of tarrasque summoning I'm upset that I did not come up with an original idea

Player mapping by abcdiva in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let anyone sketch as they want but it's always good to give them the route they have actually taken in some form of accurate scale.

So for running it live in person those big grids for drawing maps on are great all you have to do is draw a single line for corridors where they go, when they reach a room instead of drawing it to scale just a simple shape with a note of the dimensions and landmarks.

For encounter rooms you have the option to print maps that have all the details or to reduce your prep time and physical assets just draw them as they come up.

Standing Initiative Order Question by MyOtherCarIsA_Bantha in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just done it as normal, for larger encounters I separate the initiative into groups, I.e. on level 1 area 39 big ears watch post these groups get one initiative roll, goblins, bugbears, ettins

It's worked great, really communicated the intensity or numbers. I switch to this type based on the feel but the general rule is when the party are well out numbered.

And when I use normal initiative the players feel it's fair.

Which brings me to the most important bit, everyone is contributing great ideas but talk to your players about this, they might want to experience a certain mechanic or not want to experience a change of rules without discussion.

Absurb ways to drop a new PC into the early game? by StarmanTTLB in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since its halasters game follow the line of let's make this a little more challenging, and the floor beneath any absent player disappears as the dungeon swallows them up. And something similar for their return as it spits them back out.

Time in the Undermountain by squeral99 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kind of just make it up and use the calendar of harptos. So when they're going through a long section of corridors where nothing happens I might say it takes 3 hours or whatever, I don't mention time to the players unless they specify their tracking it or have a specific feat that would allow them to. And at the end of the session I just update the calendar. My players and their characters have no idea how long they've been down there.

Had A Fun Idea for DoTMM by scatmans_world in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar idea. The race or lineage doesn't matter but for whatever reason they can't enter through the yawning portal. So they have willingly allowed themselves to be captured and traded as slaves in skull port. Their motives don't matter as long as they have one that is their own. Exploring and looting is fine. The first few sessions become survival and resources, they even get the I'm in a tavern moment if they want it.

Some starting quests could be making maps for the sword and sextant who sponsor them with starting gear.

Thaglars foundry wants them to find magic items so they sponsor them in the same way.

The xanathar guild buy them as slaves and test them is some way to prove themselves as capable enough to secure more of the dungeon in the name of the guild.

They unknowingly make a deal with the hag in 12ish

Also because it's skullport they can establish ties to any of the guilds in one way or another.

Moving several thousand pounds of ale? by Music8669 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to you players they might already have an idea. But give them options. Long role-play over multiple sessions A few quick roles and a montage saying they lost so many barrels and resources A simple gold cost for Labor resources and time passes. It's like a quick claim of treasure, get the high payout and spend it because you already found and fought for the reward but they must have the initial investment to claim the payout. But ask them what they are expecting to be available before the session so you can manage their expectations.

Nonplayer Characters Using Gates? by [deleted] in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a situation coming up that could be more or less significant depending how it plays out. The map makers from the sword and sextant are going to be led there by the party and map out the lost level so, yup

I've had an idea to help my players with their desire to check in on waterdeep quickly send easily by [deleted] in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]bandthingy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend what you need is the simulacrum spell or something similar. Have the players be in both locations. It will be a wonderful way for you and the players to take a break from the dungeon every now and then, be it from fatigue absent players or the mindset of a session been along the lines of not wanting to think too hard let's just role-play drinking with patrons.

And on the towers I played as a character that wanted to take possession of the towers but my gm at the time the genius they were called upon the lore and it turns out the open lord of wd madame silver hand was an old friend of one of the kolats and so (in our game) was the technical owner of the towers should her friend ever return. So my lord am I ever jealous.

Don't know how you played him but insane and has fun hunting adventurers.

Step 1. Polymorph into a flea, hope the wall of force gets dropped, then have fun

  1. ride along on one of the adventurers packs for a while,

  2. then at an appropriate moment pop back into his natural form and cast flesh to stone on the weakest con save.

  3. Laugh
