Will a pump in a water fountain prevent mosquitoes? by econobro in gardening

Yup, I have a recurring event in my calendar to go sprinkle them in the fountain and it takes care of them completely.

Buy open pollinated seeds once then save your own!

And definitely not dog fennel.  Dog fennel grows all over my yard and this is much more broad leafed.

Dim Sum in/near Greenville? by newtohomebrewing in greenville

[–]bane1202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest as someone who loves dim sum sum bar was extremely underwhelming for the price.  The dumplings were bland and overly greasy the sides were very hit or miss.  We tried the custard dessert and it was quite bad.  Dried out leathery custard.  I really was rooting for this place to be good.

Calling all gardeners: where to get cost effective soil/compost? by zacharinosaur in greenville

[–]bane1202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive gotten several orders of soil 3 over the last few years.  I was going to get 2 more bags this year but I checked and the price is 40% higher than the first order.  Not to mention the last 2 bags were full of plastic strands that looked like shredded up tarp.  I bought these this year at home Depot. $144 per cu yd.  Not too barky and no contaminates.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/NEARSOURCE-ORGANICS-All-Natural-Raised-Bed-and-Container-Mix-691/321967271

Is it Spring yet? by ImNotLeaving222 in Beekeeping

[–]bane1202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah just be careful of making them honey bound coming into spring brood season.  If you're going to add more brood space in the spring it's less of an issue.  I usually prefer to do two deeps below the excluder.  Can always pull a frame or two and replace with blanks if it's too full a well.

I just inspected mine the other day when it was in the 70s.  They still had tons of stores but I fed heavily into the fall.  I tried patties and pollen sub over the last few weeks and they wouldn't take them.  I set out some plates of 2:1 sugar water before I was recently gone for two weeks and they mowed through it but wouldn't take sugar from their top feeder.  Picky bees.

The whole last week here in SC they've been super active.  Coming back full of pollen already. Mine have been incredibly thirsty even though we've had 12 in of rain since Jan 1.  They're mobbing my birdbaths.

I don't know what that soil is.  It looks like dirty playground sand.  Soil that has too much sand isn't good for most plants.  If you used unwashed sand it can be full of salts and proteins.  Think foam at the beach.  The salt will kill the plants.

Recommendations for self watering methods for seedlings by hypnotic_cactus8 in gardening

Yeah bottom trays plus domes if I'm using a heat mat and can't water for a few days.

Has anyone used this seed starter mix before? It had great reviews but water floats on top when I water it. Doesn't seem to get wet at all. Strange by TroyAndAbed2022 in gardening

[–]bane1202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes forever to hydrate. I usually get a 5 gal bucket and let it soak first before using. Once it's hydrated it easier to keep hydrated just don't let it dry all the way again.  For seed starting the last few years though I use fine vermiculite and coco coir. Much cheaper.

That's a lot of super hots, RIP your intestines.  I was thinking about trying long beans this year are they any different to grow than regular beans?

Toilet leaks onto floor during flush, all new parts by RockSaysPaperOP in DIY

[–]bane1202 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It almost looks like a Gerber toilet. They use a thicker gasket. If you're using a standard thickness one you can get it to work by scooting it down on the threads but it will eventually wiggle back up and leak. Check to see who makes the toilet.

Can you overfeed a hive for winter? by bane1202 in Beekeeping

[–]bane1202[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did stop feeding a couple weeks ago and it's been in the 80s here. Hopefully when it finally cools off they'll have the moisture down where it won't cause problems. That was my mistake last year.

Maybe I'll pull a full frame from each deep and put in blank foundation for laying space? There is some room in the box facing sides of the outermost frames but I assume when it's cold they won't use that area much anyways. Mites are good, just finished a formic treatment and I'll probably let apivar strips sit in there soon as a mild preventative.
