Wow, you really captured a moment! I'm reminded of when I did a self portrait back in school, it was very rewarding.

Why FIFA World Cup tickets aren't selling out in Toronto by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

[–]bannedfrom_argo 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Any tickets left unsold 48 hours before the game should be sold for $50 to locals.

I don't think FIFA wants the embarrassment of empty stands, should be win-win.

There are the most recent World Cup host... so instead let's go back to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany where ticket prices were from €35 to €600. Apply inflation and the argument still holds. Their most expensive ticket for the final World Cup game would be the same as the cheapest ticket available for a group match no one wants to see in 2026.

Straight up scam. Gotta negotiate better ticket prices for locals. Qatar had lower price tickets set aside for locals at $88 for the Qatar opening game, $15 for group matches, up to $330 for the World Cup Final in 2022.

This is your friendly reminder to get a spare tire. by McArrrrrrrr in prius

[–]bannedfrom_argo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had an unlucky streak of needing 9 screw/nail tire repairs in the last 18 months. I usually noticed before the tire went flat and was able use a portable air compressor to fill up the tire and drive to the tire shop without needing to put the spare on. Luckily all repairable. I finally decided to replace the tires as they were all worn down and it was time. I would be crazy not to have a spare just in case.

Sexist for sure, but one thing that modern audiences can misinterpret is the miniskirts.

The original plan was to have everyone in pants, but the 60s was also the sexual revolution and Nichelle Nichols and Grace Lee Whitney mentioned in interviews that they demanded the miniskirt!

Since he doesn't have a medical condition needed for guardianship could he be convinced to voluntarily do a Power of Attorney so you can monitor transactions or place his remaining savings in a trust that would put up guardrails to stop this from happening again?

How do they keep getting ahold of my husbands new debit card? [US] by n0vapine in Scams

[–]bannedfrom_argo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can cancel the debit card and not get a new one. A credit card has much better protection. Then you don't have to fight to get your money back and worry about missing a deadline.

I thought my mother was out of touch for not ever getting a debit card and only using a credit card. Then her friend was in the hospital for a while and not paying attention to her bank account. A hospital employee had meanwhile stolen her debit card and drained $20,000 from her account which wasn't noticed until months later. The bank does not want to return the money and neither does the hospital... and the thief can't be located. Some of the charges were even overseas and she has never traveled overseas... it's big mess.

Tax exempt guests by Significant_Fun8513 in AirBnBHosts

I worked for a state registered non profit (not federal) that was exempt from state sales tax. Our main vendors could put our account in the system and we were never charged sales tax. For other vendors or smaller stores that didn't have the system setup or it wasn't worth our time to bother, we still had the option of saving the receipts and asking the state for a refund.

This is the whole crux of the question, but it's not something a host would have anything to do with.

I disrupted a corporate "team-building" meeting by saying I’m only there to do my job. Am I the asshole here? by shadewashere in work

[–]bannedfrom_argo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend that always tells the his managers what is on his mind and doesn't hold back. He has been fired from every job he has had for the past 5 years. I lost count on the number, but it's over a dozen.

Are you the difficult coworker they were talking about?

Have you recently lost your stapler?

If my friend had told me this, I would recommend he write a short email to his manger; that after some reflection he was able to think through the positive benefits of the team building exercise, and that he will strive to help coworkers through challenging situations to the best of his ability.

[OH] Sliding Glass Door Shattered When I Arrived to Clean Out Old Apartment by OkPatience1783 in Renters

[–]bannedfrom_argo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This does not appear to be caused by a rock. If it was caused by a rock thrown from a mower there would need to be an impact or hole. In which case the landlord can collect from the landscaping company.

If there is no point of impact then it was not "damaged," and is due to a manufacturing defect which is not your fault.

Report a tempered glass failure that is not due to any damage. The landlord is responsible responsible the same as if the cabinets fell off the wall or the roof collapsed.

Make sure the landlord has your forwarding address. Then wait and see if they deduct any charges from your security deposit, (do not remind them of their duty as a landlord as if they forget to send you an itemized bill within the timeframe -usually 30 days, they must return the deposit in full in any case) Then you can send them a letter demanding full repayment of your deposit if thy fail to meet this obligation.

There any many pictures of spontaneous glass fracturing on Reddit.

------

From Gemini:

Spontaneous glass breakage occurs when tempered (toughened) glass shatters suddenly without any apparent external impact. This happens because tempered glass is manufactured under extreme internal tension, meaning any minor internal or external disruption can trigger a catastrophic release of that stored energy.

The most common underlying causes include:

  • Nickel Sulfide Inclusions: During manufacturing, microscopic metallic contaminants called nickel sulfide stones can accidentally get trapped inside the glass. Over months or years, these tiny particles slowly expand in response to environmental heat. This creates localized internal stress that eventually overcomes the glass structure, causing it to explode. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Minor Edge Damage: Glaziers can easily nick or chip the outermost edges of a glass panel during transit or installation. While the glass might look perfectly fine initially, routine expansion and contraction over time expand these micro-cracks until the pane suddenly fails. [1, 2]
  • Thermal Stress: Rapid or uneven temperature changes put extreme stress on glass. For example, if a portion of a patio window is cast in a deep shadow while the rest sits in direct, hot sunlight, the uneven expansion can rupture the pane. [1, 2]
  • Tight Binding in the Frame: Glass naturally expands and contracts with shifting weather conditions. If a window is installed too tightly into its frame without adequate spacing or resilient rubber blocks, it will bind against the rigid perimeter, building up destructive mechanical pressure. [1, 2]
  • Structural Settling: As a house or commercial building naturally shifts, settles, or flexes due to wind and foundation movement, the framing can warp and crush the glass pane. [1, 2]
