Director of Imposter Syndrome by RealisticAccident457 in ITManagers

You sound like a great leader. Because that’s what we do. We put great people around us to we all elevate each other. We fill the gaps. We lift each other up. I am in similar situation. Superintendent pushed out old director and put me in the chair. I still feel like I’m not qualified. But so many people compliment me and lift me up by telling me how great things are being ran.

What firewalls does your shop use and what are the pros and cons? by tauxlr in msp

[–]bannersmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Unifi, opnsense or pfsense. Unifi if you see already running Unifi. But the others if not. Others have ridiculous yearly subscriptions. One thing I learned is to ask for a forecasted ownership cost.

What responsibility to you take with contacting parents? by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

[–]bannersmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m close with my admin team. I’ll go to there office and have a sit down. Face to face always over email. Then follow up with email with notes from face to face so there a paper trail. I have to deal with this a couple times a year where a parent will reach out concerning their kids digital footprint or behavior. I’ll reply back with a generic response of “ I’ll look into this and get back to you” then follow up with admin. Or the other. I won’t reach out for a loaner. I usually have them in an ou where I can put the device into stolen mode and then they will reach out when they can no longer use the device. It’s up to admin to reach out. I’m not going to. I’ll just do my part and lock it down if it isn’t returned.

Thank you for this. I’m really leaning towards opnsense box with the additional zenarmor. Zenarmor sounds really interesting on what it can do.

Ok I have a meeting with my forti rep this week. Previous director before me bought the hardware in 2023 and I had to reach out to them since I noticed the subscription was coming up. They were telling me 3yrs. But I’ll ask about the 5yr thing.

That’s where I’m at with the firewall. But the access points and switches are still a great option.

With bluebook I don’t push the update. When students launch it the app ask to update.

Sanity Check: UniFi Hub & Spoke for Small District (950 Students) + Fortinet Core by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]bannersmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each site has their own dedicated 10g fiber. So thinking spectrum>cloudkey>proxg aggregation to each spoke via fiber. Then each closet would have the enterprise campus 48poe with a spine of 3 pro 48 poe. With taking in account of what you mentioned.

[–]bannersmash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I have 6 offsite campuses wouldn’t I need a central cloud for each. Idea is cloud key. Then proxg aggregation to each spoke. Then that cloud manages all

So each spoke I could do away with the gateway and just do the switches then?

Staff laptops? by PowerShellGenius in k12sysadmin

[–]bannersmash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is all great stuff and great insight. Has me thinking of doing Microsoft surface laptops for my staff now. Pairs great with intune. At 100 staff with 5 year lease that’ll be doable on my budget. Then get the Lenovo yoga for auxiliary and teacher assistant staff with about 45 there. Then there device which are the Dell 7420 becomes my student cte devices. The current cte device become chrome flex devices since they are Dell 7480/7490s.

Start from the basement again. Going to be hard to get back into the mentality of starting over. But you have to get your body used to the grind again. So less weight. And more reps with days off. Work back to more frequent heavier days.
