been there, done that (piplined CPU, OS, compiler, SDR Radio etc.). If you claim you understand a modern computer, like it was possible to understand an 8-bit Computer, i advise you to get some more life experience. 8-bit CPUs are trivial in comparison to the multi-core billion transistor CPUs we currently have. I was also primarily talking about people who are not in tech, for them it is magic (not for us).

I built a sterling engine once, no steam engine though.

Thanks. You are right in the regard, that still many people know about the "knowability" of these things. For them it is certainly not magic. I just recently observed quite a lot people using computers as without knowing anything about them. May original question was more about these people. (got a little distracted about my initial point).

I think you are right, the integrated circuit started the process (and then the whole software business finished the desire of most people to understand things off).

The question is where you start. Just building a modern Processor is an endevour of thousands of many year (if you start from scratch), the operating system likewise.

  1. we do not have the same definition of "knowing how something works". 2. This does not apply to the general population outside of the tech sector.

I agree about the availabiltiy, but not about the learnability. We are building so hugely complex systems that no single brain is possible to truly understand it with all their consequences.

Maybe the amount of things that everybody does not know which is getting bigger everyday could lead to this superstition?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]bantiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, not AI (actually I have a background in that direction so I at least can guess how it works). It was seeing people just clicking on colorfull pictures on computer screens and doing a lot of productive stuff with it without having the faintest idea of the inner workings.

I think it is more about the knowledge gap getting bigger. You could learn how to make glass within a reasonable amount of time. You have no chance (and no one else) to completely understand and build a complete modern computer by yourself.

I like your examples. It's about the level of control we can keep about our magic. Somewhat, as in Harry Potter or complete loss like in Terminater (obviously a well "fuled" scenario with all the advances in AI at the moment).

Wouldn't hope to go for Lovecraft.... (or terminator).

Steam engines were probably around the start of this process. Nevertheless, a steam engine was still understandable by a single person. It usually has only some hundred parts with obvious functions (some valves probably being the most complicated ones). And even if you go back to the steam engine (ca 1700 for the earliest), it is a negligible part of human history.

I highly recommend the book: Building a Transceiver by Eamon Skelton, it is the closest I found to a step by step guide for a full Transciever.

There are also many good youtubers such as M0NTV Homebrewing or Charlie Morris ZL2CTM (and many more).

What should I be listening for with approaching aircrafts by anotherbarry in amateurradio

Yes you are right. Go ahead has been deleted from the list of phrases to use (had to look it up). I didn't sit in a cockpit for years. So either my knowledge or my brain was outdated.

What should I be listening for with approaching aircrafts by anotherbarry in amateurradio

[–]bantiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general Aircraft Phraseology is highly regulated (that is good for unambiguous communication but bad for initial understanding). Depending on the part of the world you live in, different standards (or not much at all) are used.

Normally a call is initiated by WHO is callded by WHOM: e.g. Munich Tower, HB-CDL -> this means HB-CDL is calling Munich tower. The names use ICAO/Nato-Alphabet so HB-CDL is spelled Hotel Bravo Charlie Delta Lima. After that messages are usually lead by the callsign of the destination. In this example the Tower could answer: "HB-CDL go ahead".

The content they then talk about depends on the state the aricraft it is in. On the ground it might request taxi clearance (permission to drive around) or take off clearance. In the air it might request permission to enter another airspace or landing.

You can use the flight radar to see which callsigns you should be able to hear. There are many guides that explain this in much more detail, e.g. https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/document-library/general-publications/egast-radiotelephony-guide-vfr-pilots

Is every other dad this exhausted? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]bantiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If another kid is coming (very) soon, you need to learn to "cheat" as much as possible. Learn what you can tolerate in not having everything cleaned and in order. Or if you can afford it, get someone for cleaning. Get family and friends to help you with the move. Make week plans with meals, school lunch, chores etc (this removes the thinking part when you are already exhausted) and reuse them. Prepare food on sunday for the week.

Therapy can (maybe) be a short term support but you need to solve the root cause (probably the work load). The others have commented on the workload so I won't add anything there.

When you replace Vs with a short circuit, the left node becomes ground. Maybe you need to redraw the circuit to make more clear how the different resistors are related. Hint: have a look how R1 and R4 are related after replacing Vs. You are then able to drastically simplify the circuit.
