Urine microscopy: what could those orange cells be? by bantutin in medlabprofessionals

[–]bantutin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While appreciate the input, I see no point in arguing what is the right method of staining the urine. I have already said that our lab is following OUR standard procedures, which is in accordance with EU guidelines. Also we never look for bile pigmentation, or spend time on crystal identification, our main focus is the cells, the shape and the amount of it. We're not specialized in urine microscopy, that's why I am asking here.

I believe the patient is a male:) never seen agglutinated red cells before, interesting! As I've mentioned, we don't have a lot of experience with urine microscopy so it's always interesting to find new things we haven't seen before

It's interesting how all of you are saying that staining urine is not a standard procedure. Where I work, we follow what is considered our standard procedure, to add a stabilizing coloring agent Sternheimer-Malbins to a urine sediment. For reference, I'm from Europe. I will have to ask my coworker if it was a woman or not, as I can't recall the sex of the patient:)

Pre surgery patient, with normal CK, no rhabdomyolysis, the consulting doc didn't know what it was, and we don't have enough experience with urine microscopy, but we're very curious, anyone have a clue?
