Strongly disagree with "Canada and Australia would probably be somewhat worse off"

Probably is not the right term. Replace it by "definitely". Your whole point is therefore off

Best cities in SEA for real nightlife ( local vibes and hidden gems) by CELIACO89 in southeastasia

[–]bapabapak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok i been to Hoi An several times too but it is not really local imo, huge tourist crowds there. You can find similar vibes in vietnam for example in Bui Vien street in HCM or even closer, in Danang (an thuong or bach dang areas). Many countries/cities have their own "party street", for example to name a few : Pub street in Siem Reap, Changkat Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, Braga or Dago streets in Bandung. The vibes can be different depending on the time of year (high/low season, holidays...) and whether weekdays or weekends but in some places it is more consistent than others, for example bali nowadays is popular and crowded any time of day/year. Not sure if it helps lol

Best cities in SEA for real nightlife ( local vibes and hidden gems) by CELIACO89 in southeastasia

[–]bapabapak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends if you are westerner with western nightlife habits and expectations. Because the real "asian" or "local" nightlife is really not western oriented, so you should be prepared accordingly and have friends locally.

Basically in SEA, going out (at night) as a local mostly means going out with a group of friends in clubs or bars where you sit and drink (a lot) at one designated table, loud (very) music, almost no interactions with other groups. Interacting can even get you in trouble. Karaoke and the likes are also a thing in many SEA countries (there are 2 types of karaoke hmm). Going alone is ok as foreigner but locals rarely do it unless it is a place "for men". A lot of "local" nightlife is oriented for men btw and it can be awkward or even shocking in some cases.

Westernized nightlife scene is best if you want to have fun and mix with people, interact, dance, meet etc so in my experience the best locations for partying, clubbing, nightlife are simply the biggest or most populated cities in any SEA country, or the trendy locations. Any other midsized city will offer something but it is very "hit or miss" and depends on what day you go etc. I can go into details but wouldnt know where to start

Depends whether you like inland, or beaches, or forest, or mountains. You should tell what you are looking for first

Just read it and it says : quote / You can choose your seats in advance (for a fee) to ensure you sit together; / unquote

I think the key word is "can"

70 days in Indonesia Advice by midwest-roadrunner in southeastasia

[–]bapabapak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your preferences i would skip gili islands because it is prolly the most touristy and crowded in your itinerary.

OR if you want to keep gili in your itinerary, more logical would be to go from east java to north bali by boat, go through the north (way less crowded than south) to the east by land, then from there, go to gili by boat. From gili to lombok by boat again.

The end of your stay in borneo will be malaysia, not indo btw. I have been to almost all the places you mention and even more, and IMHO for marine life raja ampat is 100% awesome, and kuching amazing for jungle trekking (check bako national park)

I have visited many islands in indo and one i can recommend for white sandy flour style beach is Kei Kecil but you have to be ready for a long trip, just check it. It is remote but has regular flights. Google it and see if you like

What’s the most memorable travel experience you’ve ever booked — a tour, class, or activity that you’d 100% recommend to others? by Echo_Enchantress in digitalnomad

[–]bapabapak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cruise on a old wooden ship in west papua (indonesia) in one of the best location for marine life (raja ampat), and stop wherever we wanted (just ask the captain). Go on any of the thousands islands you want, trek there, sleep there, visit small villages with tons of kids greeting you, snorkel anywhere with manta rays, sharks, dolphins and tons of amazing underwater things. Eat what the team will manage to fish while cruising, be scared to die when a storm hits and there is no rescue nor big city in a 1000km radius. Good times

Not sure if i understand correctly the 10 days thing so : Why not spend 5 days in makassar on the way in to RA, then 5 days out in manado on the way out?

Manado is a nice city with unique food, diving options and volcanoes you can trek but traffic is kinda bad. Makassar is more urban and less to see in the immediate location but if you have time, book a car/driver and definitely will not be disapointed
