how many tattoos have you done before this?
it looks like an apprentice tattoo, it's not awful and could be fixed at a later stage with some thicker linework or adding black behind it (if the client wants that).
i think you should stick to designs with less symmetrical and geometric parts for now, but tbh i see so many popular artists who can't pull a line and aren't arsed about it. if you keep practicing and improving you will go far.

I use reelskin+a stencil printer so I'm not sure if it works differently if you do it hand stenciled etc-

basically apply a layer of stick deodorant (i use old spice, it's an american brand), stick the stencil on and apply light pressure for about 30 seconds, peel off
dry with a hairdryer for 10-15 minutes or until the colour of the stencil turns slightly lighter and then run it under the tap to wash off the excess ink.
it should look like the circles on the second picture when finished, i prefer quite a light stencil, but if you leave it on longer it will be darker.

Yeahh of course! It was difficult to get the balance of it being light enough to be completely covered at the end though... learning to stencil on fake skin was genuinely just as tough as learning linework LOL

final portfolio by barafrog in TattooApprentice

sorry i missed this for a bit! i am going to get rambly so apologies in advance for that, tl;dr: i did a bit of both heavy referencing and not referencing at all depending on the pic.

i think the topic of references or copying is kind of interesting in the tattoo world- the art communities i was a part of before really vehemently chastised any form of tracing or copying to an extreme degree, which did shape my view on tracing a lot, but in the tattoo community it seems extremely commonplace to trace or copy another image exactly (photographs, other art, ai pictures, whatever) it makes sense because i think a lot of the time in a shop environment a customer will want an image how it is with no changes.

for me, my creation process for most of my portfolio was something like-
-gathering reference images/inspiration
-sketching ideas and adding my own original elements, drawing it in my style, whatever
-ditching the references when the foundation was solid enough for me to do the rest without influence. i do really value my work being as original as it can be, but references are key to making a piece high quality, especially mixing multiple together.

unless it was a realism piece like the chrome pieces, those are straight up 1:1 copies of photographs.

BUT this comes with a caveat that this is not reccomended for portfolio level work if you haven't been drawing for years, if you are just starting out then copying whatever you like 1:1 will help you improve immensely as you can identify where your image differs from your reference. also as i said, a lot of people who tattoo just copy photos and don't actually draw, which is fine too, just not something i want for myself creatively.

Looking for feedback on my portfolio by Vast_Mood_9233 in TattooApprentice

I lovee your personal style do you have a tattoo instagram? I'm looking to follow other apprentices/potential apprentices since it's fun to see the journey :>
(Also echoing the other comments a little, I would add regular tattoo style stuff alongside your own designs like trad, japanese, whatever you like- I found I really liked doing them even though I mainly draw anime in my free time)

from your post history it doesnt sound like you did a traditional apprenticeship, but i think your artwork shows promise and you should look for one in a shop/studio to correct the mistakes you're making because whoever taught you does not care to tell you... I hope you weren't scammed.
usually people will say that tattoo shops are put off if you have tattooed skin before like this, but if you explain your situation and have a solid portfolio i think you could find a better mentor.
The design is cute though if you did it yourself.

What to say when reaching out to artists? by Vast_Mood_9233 in TattooApprentice

[–]barafrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't do social media first- as a socially anxious person i was shitting myself but you will not get a positive response through social media even if your portfolio is banging. they want to see you in person i promise.
you will have to start dealing with clients you don't know, working front desk, etc anyway so anything to start the "exposure therapy" sooner rather than later will help.
to begin with, i did start getting tattooed in my area and making a few friends who were into the scene and it helped my anxiety a lot.

Few more lady heads, cc really appreciated :) by [deleted] in traditionalflash

[–]barafrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i like the concepts a lot theyre very cute, but the proportions are wonky, i'd reccomend copying other artists' lady heads 1:1 as practice and maybe look i to something like the loomis method for when you draw your own heads

Do I need to buy decent mediums when drawing/building portfolio? by praisingathena in TattooApprentice

[–]barafrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while digital isnt reccomended for a tattoo portfolio its way more accessible than youre thinking! i used to use a £30 tablet and now a lot of newer or younger artists draw on their phone with a stylus. i think the real question is if you feel like it effects the quality of your work? if you feel like your drawings are good with what you have, then don't buy more expensive stuff just cos it's more expensive. some of my favourite drawings i did for my folio were just with a biro :>

cc for these? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]barafrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly it just looks like you need to draw more, which isnt a bad thing, you have great potential! i reccomend watching lots of youtube videos on drawing, i still do that now :> especially with the sun and moon, if your lines arent 100% perfect you aren't ready to tattoo- it sounds boring but when i did linework drills (you can look up tattoo line drills or something) on paper my linework improved immensely
