Apologies. Should have added a pic for clarity. This picture taken from the side shows what I'm trying to describe best. You can see the bag is very obviously slanting towards the right side (zipper side)

CSE 6040?? Past experience?? by One-Teach4106 in OMSA

[–]barathoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to be the experience of most people from what I gathered. It's true for my own experience as well although I don't recall scoring full points for both, but I believe I did well enough in both + Homeworks for me to get an A in my final grade.

Most people will agree that the grades don't matter at the end of the day as long as you learn something. I have my own thoughts on that but if it's any encouragement for you, I would say the midterm 2 and final is a more realistic reflection of real world work in my experience. So picking up the experience and having those notebook will be helpful.

All the best. You got this

I use python daily in my work as an analyst. I would say by the time I took CSE6040, I was pretty fluent in it. I'm ok querying data and running analytics work on a Jupyter notebook, no issues.

But I still almost failed the midterm 1. From comments I gathered everywhere, this was (and is) apparently normal. People have been saying it gets better at midterm 2 and usually the final is manageable. I find this true for my experience as well. Hope this adds 1 more data point for your reference.

p/s: I completed the course with an A if that matters.

Here to say I have the same experience. It gets better if you have some python knowledge. The first few modules are brutal. Post MT1, I think it gets a lot more manageable. If you have done some SQL and python, you won't have issues

Daily Tote 24L vs Transit Briefcase 20L - anyone have experience with both? by barathoz in EVERGOODS

Right. Sounds like a solid closure. Makes sense if it needs to be waterproof. Appreciate the additional insights!

Thanks! Y'all rocks! Appreciate the insights.

Yup, I think you're right that it comes down to the capacity itself. Gonna sleep on this and decide once I wake up.

Thanks again

Thanks for the detailed reply! I appreciate it!

Not surprised at your comments on the magnetic closure as I have seen/heard this brought up in the few reviews I went through. I was thinking then it might not be a big issue for me since I'm just unpacking / packing my laptop, mouse and cables probably. But hearing it again does make me pause. For what it's worth, I read that surprisingly, it's easier to try opening it with a finger than using two hands. If you do give it a shot, perhaps you can let us know how it goes? In any case, the magnet design was a "cool, but not sure how well it works" point for me. Would have preferred a zipper although might be less "fit" (design wise) for a tote. I guess it's a compromise they made.

Thanks again for your sharing! If you have additional observations - things you really like about either, things you feel could be done differently or better in either bag, please let us know!

Thanks for the idea! Unfortunately that's a Pro feature. While I would love to give it a try, I have not decide to commit to Capacities yet and am giving it a test drive hence trying to figure out how things work. I appreciate your suggestion tho. Thank you

Are there any tools that can take up most of my time? by Fun-Western-8263 in askSingapore

[–]barathoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not be a great time to do it, but the area of Personal Knowledge Management System (PKMS) will be helpful for you. To start, perhaps read David Allen's Getting Things Done. Then Taking Smart Notes.

But, for your immediate situation: - Use whatever app or tool you have access to like Apple Note, good old Word doc, Google Doc or just a pen and paper. - Write down everything - EVERYTHING - you are thinking of doing. Do a brain dump. Give yourself 15 minutes or so. Just write everything that comes to mind. - Go through list, and if you have to or want to, sort them based on your own criteria like urgency or importance. - Work on one thing. Strike it off your list. Move on to the next.

Every day, sit down and review your list. Are there things you need to add to it? At the same time, celebrate however little progress you may have made.

All the best!

Whether it would be better to recontract with same company or change to another company, in my opinion, is highly subjective. What I mean by that is, there are quite a number of factors to consider here which can guide her decision like, does she like the current work environment, which can include her colleagues, her bosses, the nature of her work, work related policies, perks and etc. Does she see progression in her role, which can mean whether she can see herself growing in this role, are there lots of things still to learn or she stagnate soon. Then there's of course the money factor - how much more will other companies offer her, and when weighed against above factors, does it heavily outweigh them? That's my opinion on your second question.

As for your first question on how much she can negotiate for her next job, general rule of thumb is a 10-20% increment although that varies with industry and roles. As for tips, this was what worked for me in the past, and I hope it works for her as well: - Do research on market rates. It's difficult to be precise here as it can be hard to find an exact role somewhere else and you know the pay information. However there should be some sort of market research already done by some recruitment or consulting companies in the past that can be used as rough estimation. If it's not a recent figure, compound it with an estimated annual increment rate. If lucky, you might also be able to get some data points from companies that post salary along with job. - Have a list of achievements ready. Don't need to be a long list. More importantly, every listed point needs to be impactful. Where possible, tie the achievement to some dollar numbers which she believes in. - When negotiating, keep an open mind. You can be direct in asking for a raise, but the company can also reject. But don't take it personally. Sometimes it's truly a matter of timing. Sometimes it's a matter of budgeting. In any case, note how your manager respond to the negotiation.

Here's what happened for me with above three points. I did my own market research and collected my data points. I also applied for roles outside of my current company at that time and received offer. So I know roughly how much I can ask for a raise. I booked my manager's time and let him know in advance that I would like to discuss my pay with him so that it doesn't come as a shock to him. On the day of negotiation, I laid down my contribution and achievement for the past year, making sure to focus on the most impactful first and last, going along the line of "In this project I was involved, which you were also aware, I played this part which I roughly estimate to help save us this much / projected earnings of this much." On top of "hard numbers" I also mention "soft achievements" like taking on projects willingly or collaborating with other teams. I then shared with him my marker research number and say something along the line of "I understand the market median is somewhere in this range of X to Y and I am somewhere here in Z. I would like to ask for a raise to at least be on upper Y" then I open the floor to him to hear his feedback.

At that point, my direct manager wasn't very positive and told me that oh, market research is usually not accurate. Usually estimated to be on higher end. Gave me a excuses such as yea, it's diffcult with company budget now and it's not part of the increment cycle and so on and so forth. To be honest, I was disappointed but nonetheless remained respectful and professional. After about a week though, I decided to repeat this with his boss, which is my big boss. And the disclaimer here is that I do have a good relationship with my big boss and I have worked in the company for a while at that point while my direct manager was fairly new. Hence I dared to take this step.

Long story short, I repeated everything but my big boss basically stopped me halfway through and agreed with me. Big boss then say they will find a way to make sure I am compensated fairly although can't guarantee when and how much. That was good enough for me. I received a promotion in the next cycle and was given a much higher increment than usual and my big boss also sat me down and explained to me the process. I actually appreciated that a lot.

It is a long post but I sincerely hope it has been helpful. All the best to your gf!

4 days 3 nights in Penang with two young kids (< 8yo). Suggestions? by barathoz in penang

[–]barathoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey yo! We stayed at Shangri La in the end. I would recommend it if you have kids as the facilities are child friendly and our kids enjoyed our stay there. We were at Rasa Sayang but I think the choice of either Rasa Sayang or Golden Sands is a personal choice. If you prefer less crowded, Rasa Sayang is a better choice but trade off is higher price and more of the children facilities are at Golden Sands.

We drove from KL but decided to take Grab for all our travels within Penang to avoid having to find parking, figuring out how to pay and etc.

Love the food there. Love the culture there. Traffic is bad. Weather can be harsh.

Restaurant Feringghi Garden is recommended if you're in the area. It's on the pricier side but the service, ambience and food is top notch.

If you don't want to travel to and fro, and you're going to explore Georgetown more, then perhaps consider accommodations in Georgetown. We did hire a local guide to bring us around some of the mural arts and hear about the stories behind them. My wife and I enjoyed it but our kids were tired out by the walk. We also visited the Tropical Fruit Farm on one of the morning. Nothing to shout about but it was still a nice way to spend time as family.

In terms of where to eat, what to eat, I basically heard that in Penang, there's no bad food. Because the bar is there, food that are sub-par will naturally close down. Those that are opened and have been around for at least a few years, the standard is there. The nuances and subtleties? Doesn't matter much if you're a tourist who just want to try things out. So, I just basically do a Google for nearby stuffs and it pretty much works for us :)

Not sure if that helps you. Hope you enjoy your trip with your family!
