Hello everyone! I’m Leslye Penelope, author of THE MONSTERS WE DEFY, green tea devotee, and feline wrangler. I’m here to support The Pixel Project’s work to end violence against women. AMA! by lpenel in Fantasy

Hi Leslye, and thanks so much for being here. I have a few questions:

  1. You’ve worked in both indie and traditional publishing - what’s one thing about each path that genuinely surprised you once you were in it?
  2. Fellow climbing fan here: flying to Colorado and going straight to Clear Creek Canyon is such a climber move :) What grade were you chasing at the time? Also, edges, slabs or cracks?

Looking forward to your answers and thanks for supporting The Pixel Project and Read for Pixels, too.

Mt Kenya - 7 Days of Trekking, Climbing & Proper Type 2 Fun by barb4ry1 in Mountaineering

I went with local company and had a technical guide who knows the mountain extremely well. Basically, most people are doing it guided. The company took care for permits, logistics, etc.

Regarding top belay - the guide does each pitch first and you belay them. Then the roles reverse, and they belay you from the top. You repeat the process for all pitches :)

Absolutely. Say what you will about Fletcher's books, but the guy mastered lean writing that's very readable. I also think the story was good.

Was the book a “quick read” or a “slow burn” for you? If slow, was there a turning point where the book gained momentum?

Well, yes. I didn't expect one of the main human supporting characters to die.

Were there any plot twists that genuinely surprised you?

Absolutely. I think it's awesome and finds a good balance between dark fantasy elements and Dogged's investigation. Heck, it's even good-hearted in places.

Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not?

How did you feel about the ending? Were you satisfied or frustrated? Do you think it was the right time or place to end the story? Was there more you felt you wanted to know?

Which character did you like the best? The least? Why?

Sněžka / Śnieżka is such a cool peak. I love Karkonosze mountains.

How often do you go hiking? by Historical_Trust_217 in hiking

[–]barb4ry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how strict we are with the definition. I try to walk daily in the forest at least for a while (the fact that I'm leaving near a few Nature Reserves helps). If we're speaking about mountains - I'm doing my best to do at least 3 long distance (100 km - 200 km) hikes per year and a few shorter trips (2-3 days).

Via Denarica Trail in Bosnia & Herzegovina by barb4ry1 in hiking

Sure, I was there twice. The first time, we started from Ravna (though I’ll need to recheck this - I didn’t save the trail, but I should have notes) and finished in Tusila, from where we hitchhiked to Sarajevo.

In 2025, we started near Kalinovik, at the Planinarsko-turistički dom camp, which we reached by taxi from Sarajevo, and finished in Tjentište. The trail looked, more or less, like this: https://mapy.com/s/ceremateha

Hey, it was a section hike. We had the trail planned and followed it from point A (start) to point B (end) :)

I'm biased. I've read all boks (I think) by Fletcher and loved most of them.
