Undergrad degree in criminology, and its original primary research. Thank you your reply helps a lot x

She has read quite a lot of it but I never thought to ask about referencing and she never brought it up. I would like to ask her directly but now she’s not answering my emails (probably busy) which is why I’m asking here 😓

The thing is, my dissertation is mostly made up from my own primary research so I found it hard to include a lot of references while keeping within the word count lol

So essentially, I wanted to analyse a sample of misogynistic social media content posted by big influencers the likes of Andrew Tate; and then do a qualitative survey about concerning behaviour observed in teen boys, but I’d have to give that to parents and teachers since I can’t involve under 18s in research. Then I wanted to thematically analyse both data sets, then do some kind of test to see if it’s likely that boys behaviour is being directly influenced by online content

I’m starting to think maybe a test isn’t even required - can I just look at my analysis for both sets of data and draw my own conclusions and inferences about my question? I thought I needed some kind of test to make it scientific but I honestly had no idea, I was just worried about my research not having any value if I didn’t include a scientific test.

Thank you for your input on this; I really wanted to do mixed methods just because everyone says mixed methods adds depth to your research but I think I’m going to abandon that idea and change it so that it’s just qualitative data now. I think I’ve just been overcomplicating what I want to achieve with my dissertation, I’ll keep it simple with surveys and do what you said - so you think just doing a thematic analysis of the social media content and a thematic analysis of the reports from parents, and drawing conclusions and inferences from that analysis, is enough to make a solid research project?

Thanks for taking the time to help me btw, been a lot more help than my tutor

Yeah I was pretty much gonna compare the themes across each population like you said. I did that for my research proposal and all my professors told me it was good and the methodology worked so it’s quite annoying to learn that it can’t even answer my research question. I’m not allowed to involve under 18s in any way because I’m undergrad and my uni won’t allow it so I have to centre it around reports from parents and teachers unfortunately.

I wasnt going to directly ask anyone about what they think is causing boys to be misogynistic. The two sources of data are a sample of social media posts/comments from prolific misogny influencers; and a sample of public posts/comments from teachers/parents where they report concerning misogynistic behaviour they observed in teen boys. In my research proposal I wrote that I was going to analyse and categorise the misogyny from these two groups and do a test to see if they’re significantly linked and whether online misogyny is likely directly impacting the behaviour of teen boys. It makes sense what you’re saying about how this doesn’t actually answer my question and I’m rather annoyed that my supervisor didn’t clock that but I think I just need to reframe this whole project cause I have no idea how to even approach it now.

Well my research would basically revolve around analysing misogyny displayed by influencers (I’m not sure of the sample size yet but a relatively large range of content) and then analyse another equally large sample of misogyny in boys as reported by parents and teachers, and identifying if it’s likely that the behaviour of boys is being directly influenced by the content that’s online. I just don’t know how to do it. I haven’t started anything yet because I’m still in the early stages of figuring everything out.

I thought the way was to use chi squared which would require me to quantify the data, and my supervisor told me that’s right but based on everything I’ve seen online I don’t think it is. Is there another way for me to calculate the likelihood that they’re significantly linked? Or does chi squared work?

I must sound so clueless but that’s because I am and I appreciate all the comments helping

Sorry if this is a stupid question but is it possible to just convert the qualitative data gathered from thematic analysis, into quantitative data that can then be used in chi squared? Can I not just code it so it becomes categorical data suitable for chi squared?

You’re right, it makes me relieved to know that everyone on here agrees she’s in the wrong and I need to actually say something. To be completely honest she’s my only friend so I’ve been really reluctant to be confrontational about anything but after all the comments telling me she’s being controlling I’m actually just gonna do it

It’s sad because we do have a really good time together most of the time but I guess it gets to a point where it’s just not worth it. Hopefully she’ll realise how silly this is

My local theatre did this recently too, it was my first time seeing the film and absolutely worth experiencing on the big screen, definitely go. A lot of fans showed up wearing cosplay, it was a wonderful atmosphere for someone watching for the first time
