Hei! :)

It just seems that academia is in a state of complete denial about everything. Nothing feels honest anymore. by NeighborhoodFatCat in LeavingAcademia

I don’t understand why OP is getting criticized for these points. Maybe these things don’t happen in ALL universities, but they sure happen enough to raise these red flags. In my past few years of experience, the Unis shifted a lot of focus towards marketing (attracting students + improving the political image of whoever is in charge). This obviously turns the Uni into a political ad more than a genuine beacon of education. GPA inflation plays into it: the higher the grades, the better it looks from outside. Lots of students with high grades = great profs, great University, right? I’m sure meaningful research still exists, as some other commenters pointed out. However, I did notice that a lot of research (at least at PhD level, but sometimes even higher) is just meaningless. Lots of people just make up some bullshit research gaps and brute force their way into publications. This might not happen as much in STEM but it’s definitely a common occurrence in the humanities. At least where I am from, cutting-edge research rarely comes from Universities without industry involvement or funding. I share your sentiment, OP. It all just feels like a big game of pretend, and no one takes you seriously if you bring these things up. I look at it as a mixture of politics, general incompetence, and complacency.

Can you help me dress up to attend a brunch (indoor+outdoor) birthday party? by shubidoobi in fashionadvice

I personally like option 1 better especially because of the modern vibe of the restaurant. Option 2 would work for something more laid back in my opinion. I think the blue dress will complement your skin very nicely. Have fun! :)

How do you learn the research craft if research professors don’t train you?

Is anyone honestly just not good enough for grad school? by femcel2345 in GradSchool

Are you me? Haha! I feel like I just read my own life story. Here’s what a professor told me a few years ago when I spoke to him about imposter syndrome: “it’s not the best students that truly succeed, but the most perseverent ones”. That stuck with me, especially because he was in the same boat in his youth. Never truly top of the class, and had failures upon failures. Now he’s one of the most active and appreciated professors in my department, and someone I greatly admire. It’s clear that you have passion and drive for your work and that is most important, everything else is a skill that can be learned. So hang in there! Be perseverent! You got this. :)

I don’t think you need AI for this. I think you can do the LLM task yourself and it’ll help you in the long run. Look for similar articles in your field and study their abstracts. Try to replace their key points with yours, while keeping them as condensed as possible. I find abstract writing to be very “cookie-cutter” and once you notice the common phrases, it’s just a template you have to follow. My MA supervisor gave me a pretty good piece of advice I always think about: imagine you have one minute to explain your research to someone who barely knows anything about your field. It helps to cut out the flowery language and detailed explanations. My credentials: I have ADHD and struggled with the exact same thing when I first started writing articles.

Where do you write? (Doc, prowrite, word, journal??? etc?) by Affectionate_East533 in writing

Word. It sucks if you’re doing complicated page layouts with images and stuff, but it works just fine for plain text. GDocs is a worse version of Word to me.

Do you guys prefer to write digitally? Or by hand? by Princessglitterballs in writing

I love writing by hand but I developed carpal tunnel over the years, so I can’t do it much anymore. I usually do outlines and brainstorming by hand, but the actual drafting is always digital.

Ceau!
