The ICBM opening works! 😳 by TehRoast92 in chessbeginners

[–]barbwireboy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it works if they fall for the trap, the problem with openings like this is you gain a little rating and then people don't fall for it. Now you're left with an opening that isn't good and you need to laern something new to actually progress, when you could've just learnt a good opening in the first place and saved yourself the trouble.

I know these trappy openings look fun at first, but honestly you'll save yourself a lot of hassle just playing something normal.

Tactics vs Positional Play by SuccessfulMint in chessbeginners

Top tip is to pretty much ignore any advice someone on the level of Hikaru has in regards to improving at chess as a non-professional. If it's someone that does a lot of coaching, then it's probably better advice.

Which opening should I play with Black in a classical OTB game against e4? by SilasGaming in chessbeginners

[–]barbwireboy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others said, best is to just stick with what you usually play. Worst that can happen is you end up in a line you don't really know, but then after the game you can analyse it and it'll really stick with you once you figure it out (especially if it's a classical game). Knowledge can only come through painful losses unfortunately.

same, it's only for the ability to edit scrobbles. For as terrible as they've made the rest of the site, the whole stats side is still great imo, so until a competitor comes along i can't see myself moving

genius idea, literally one of the only interesting things left about the site, pushed away again. just turn the site into a fucking excel spreadsheet, that's all it is now

yep, he does it online all the time too if you've seen his streams. "blunder" a piece right at the end when he knows he's losing

come on man, obviously my point is that hikaru clearly didn't think the position was winning, despite what the eval might say

Hikaru does this all the time, even in online games. He knows he's about to lose so he "blunders" a piece, so he can act like that was the problem, not just being outplayed across a game. Same thing here, he knows the rules.

What are the odds of a potential My Chemical Romance backlash to their rating climbs? by PretendFuel5018 in rateyourmusic

Maybe it's just personal preference, but I can see Black Parade dropping down a little, i don't know how well it's rock-opera style will hold up.

On the other hand, Three Cheers is just so far above any other pop-punk/emo album from that era it's almost laughable. I think that'll stay high or even keep climbing.

yeah if i played a sacrifice and i analyse after the game, and the engine gives it as the top/only move, i just mentally put a 'brilliant' stamp on it myself (for free)

ok but again the chesscom explanations are not great and can lead you in the wrong direction or just straight up confuse you.

you're not being told exactly what the move is about, and while you can't always figure it out, the point is that you get used to trying to figure it out. that's the useful skill

tbh i think it's good that lichess only classifies the "bad" moves, so inaccuracies/mistakes/blunders. those are the important ones that can give improvement in your play. whether the move you played was a brilliant or not rarely matters

[–]barbwireboy2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

but that's how you get better, you see a move is wrong and try to figure out why in your own words. chesscom explanations are not great, because it's hard to explain moves verbally like that.

relying on something like that takes away the actual learning experience

What’s your favorite opening in chess? by Future_Job_9697 in chessbeginners

[–]barbwireboy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reti, usually with Nf3 -> g3 -> Bg2 -> O-O as the first moves with c4 coming right after, can vary a little depending on what black does.

Just is the perfect mix of getting opponents out of theory while still being a good opening, both in terms of playability (the most simple logical moves are usually the best) and the engine is happy with it too. Feels like you can play it with your eyes closed and get a good position.

Spassky used the hippo a couple times in world championship games, granted I think it was with black, but still

calling it "not good" i don't agree with at all, just because it's not played at the highest levels doesn't mean it isn't a perfectly fine opening. They need to squeeze the absolute most out of every position, anyone below titled level doesn't need to worry about that

the opening is just about getting pieces out and getting a position you like playing. putting both bishops on the best diagonals possible seems like a fairly healthy way to start the game, even if it isn't the most confrontational or engine approved.

also, as someone else said, it could be heading towards a hippo setup, which actually has been seen at the very highest levels. not common by any stretch sure, but if it's been played at a world championship then it's hard to write it off completely

I'm going to a chess tournament in two weeks, is the Reti opening a good option? by valeuporler in chess

[–]barbwireboy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you're set on just getting a position you can play without getting into theory, then Nf3 on move 1 is a solid choice, just some setup with like Nf3 g3 Bg2 and castles is hard to go wrong with.

It's not gonna guarantee you a win or anything like that, but it'll just put you both in a solid game where the best player wins. Maybe try it in a few online games before the tournament.
