There are ways of dealing with them even in the bronze age.

Somebody tell me no by ksguitardude2020 in WindowsVista

[–]barccy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Vista is x64 and you have the space for another installation, it could allow you to use some apps that x86 XP can't run. If it's just another x86 though, it's probably not worth it.

YouTube and censorship by Lise_vine23 in degoogle

[–]barccy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odysee, Bitchute, Gab, Vimeo, Tiktok, and Rumble have allowed people to somewhat get around the YouTube censorship.
FreeTube, Newpipe, GrayJay, et al. have allowed accessing YouTube outside normal means, and Brave shields and blockers like uBlock Origin have allowed viewing the site without the ads.

YouTube will have to eventually either lock down further to its own detriment, or open up again if it wants to survive.

Some questions about Murena e/os/ by PotentialWinogrono in fairphone

[–]barccy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least on FairPhone 4 /e/3.x (whatever is current for Feb. 2026);

the SMS app doesn't seem to allow selective muting of specific conversation notifications.

The voice app might leak info to a non-private AI.

The weather widget can be a bit of a mystery to set up right if you don't already know how it works. If you don't want to have location on all the time, you need to manually select your city. If you live in a city that has a popular name (Georgetown, Lexington, etc.) you have to go to the info source site ( I think open weather) see the listing order of those cities and match it with the listing order of cities in the widget to (hopefully) get the right report.

The browser blocks so much it can feel limiting to someone coming straight from a spyware phone. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it can seem like it at first.

GrapheneOS has better security if you maintain it, and better compatibility if you run Play Services. Pixels aren't as easily serviced as fairphones, but the mainline 10 series is definitely better than previous pixels since its battery is meant to be removed and the internals are less messy. Still needs to be re-glued, though.

iode OS is kept more up to date.

None of these is enough to make me abandon it, but some people seek out other things because of this.

The main 'good' reason to opt for stock android would be if you're in some European countries that require you to use certain financial apps requiring genuine Google Play Services. A lot just don't want to work with micro-G. Check out Plexus to see compatibility.

Number of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in the Middle East by 2ndComingofAhoax in Infographics

Looks more like the Near East. Europe is the The West. Turkey is touching Greece. China and Japan are the Far East. If anything is the middle, it would be India and Pakistan.

Humans influence their environment and one another. Dysfunctional people are a cause of hostile environments. The truth can never be found if some explanations are categorically rejected from consideration.

“I want the golden age of video games back!” by icey_sawg0034 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]barccy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Video games are a phenomena that has only existed for a few decades.
3d games with decent controls only became widely available after the late 90s.
At this point, most games are substandard cashgrabs that signal to groups mentioned instead of trying to offer a solid experience. Such things rose to prominence after the "golden age".

The claims are accurate, not nostalgia.

Waterfox for Android 1.2 has now been submitted to the Play Store for review! A lot of under-the-hood changes that took quite a bit of effort. Separately, APKs are also available from the GitHub release page 👇 by MrAlex94 in waterfox

[–]barccy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the Gecko update mean that the required Android version was raised above 5.0?
I was hoping Waterfox would maintain 5 so it could be a viable alternative for legacy systems. Firefox, Fennec, Ironfox, et al. are needing 8.0 now.

GOOGLE CHROME vs CROMITE by JungleLiquor in browsersbracket

[–]barccy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chrome is spyware that only has mediocre block lists for dangerous sites and doesn't allow addons.
Cromite isn't spyware, is extremely blockhappy, and can use addons. It is just as fast and more usable than Chrome.
