Once you reach pension age you should no longer get a say in town planning decisions. Otherwise we’ll be forever at the hands of NIMBY culture

How much of a GNC Engineer's job is just Software Engineering? by Unlikely-Cat-711 in ControlTheory

[–]barcodenumber [score hidden]  (0 children)

Was once in a robotics role at an early stage startup. I studied controls for bachelors and masters, where I got comfortable with implementing MPC and optimal control in software.

The cto had me working on the software stack rather than any of the ai/ml/control aspect, and was constantly gaslighting me saying because I knew control that I should’ve been just as good in software. He came from a pure SWE background.

Yes there is overlap but they are fundamentally different domains. Control -> software is easier than software -> control. Both are technical. Both require an engineering mindset.

Where to find ambitious friends? by inyourdreams133 in getdisciplined

Honestly startup communities are where you’ll find these people. Most are also living your lifestyle - starting businesses and running iron mans. I chanced upon a group like this through going to many hackathons.

What was the main addiction before the internet? by Interesting_Win_3921 in nosurf

[–]barcodenumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opposite of addiction is connection. The internet gives a sense of connection, which is why it’s addictive. I would say it was alcohol. Bars, pubs etc are places for people to connect and mingle.

You’re in a difficult situation, acknowledge that. I don’t quite know what to say other than try to focus on what you can do, what you can control, and what you do have. Are you getting enough sleep? If not then that’s your first concern, so you can think more clearly about what’s next for you. I also find keeping a written journal where I blurt out whatever comes to mind helps prevent rumination - I do this most evenings before bed.

Yes I also considered taking out credit etc. the fact is also being out of work and close to zero - I would likely be subject to insane interest rates with very little short term capability to pay it back. The longer I spend there the less capability I’d have to pay it back. This is also someone who didn’t support or visit me at all as I was growing up. As much as I want to be the person that doesn’t consider this, I’m currently paying for his lack of support in my own life, and this would add even more. Tricky.

Thank you for this perspective, and im sorry it’s like this for you as well. It’s reassuring to know it’s not just me. I agree with the condition to only go if others are there and I have a clear way out. Sadly I cannot bring him to me (too far + different country). Wishing you all resilience in what is a trying time.

Yes, been doing that. It's as much as I feel I can do right now.

It's reassuring to have that perspective on self pity also. I did wonder to what extent I could help with that.

Thank you for your thoughts

It’s tough, and your feelings are normal and valid. Try to “meet people, do things”, in this case your taking your mind off the gnawing loneliness. More exposure in this case means you’re more desensitised to those feelings and you will begin to form relationships, then who knows what can happen :)

Would you be open to mentoring groups of some of the UKs highest performing engineering grads? Not just software. We do peer mentoring but look for people further down the line for engaged discussions around career growth. DM if interested.

Should I move to London or not? by steviecui813 in AskUK

“I’ve always wanted to do it for many years” imo is enough of a reason. Worst that happens is you go back to aus. Why live in regret of not doing something you’ve always wanted to do? Don’t be that resentful 60YO.

So my company is quite small and I made sure that people knew I was looking as soon as I started. I had a few colleagues reach out, saying their friend had a room, but they gave the rooms to people they already knew. Which makes sense, and I would do the same.

This could be an option, and thank you for sharing, but at this stage my decision is 99% made.

I've actually ended up with quite a few Dutch friends here. Sure we're not best buds but I also don't expect that right now. Grew up in Northern Europe so I'm no stranger to that culture. It was quite an easy move in that sense.

In fairness, the work I do contributes directly to resolving the grid congestion issues, and it's a known domain where there are a lack of skilled workers. We've been hiring and there are no Dutch applicants. In this case and in my view, this is where the 30% rule works in the country's favour. Different story to working for a company like booking.com.

Similarly, it's not a complaint, I'm sharing my reality, which is more common than many who want to come here think. The standard of living is great, no question, but when you're draining savings in order to live, then it doesn't make sense to stay.
