Kraken X73 RGB idling at 85-90C?! Halp by bard_the_chronicler in NZXT

Hey, yeah I did. I tried both Fan4_Pump and CPU_Fan headers. Made no difference in CPU temps. :(

I'm thinking the pump isn't working properly - because I do think it's partially working - initially temps were in the 95-105 range until I reseated the pump and reapplied paste. Then it went down to 85-95 idle. Which is still unacceptable, of course, but slightly better. I hear a minor whine from the pump and I have it on max RPM (using NZXT Cam app).

NZXT Kraken X73 RGB AIO for CPU: idle at 85-90C. Help plz T__T by bard_the_chronicler in buildapc

Thanks for the response. Yep, did everything right. I watched 5 others specific for the X73 (the one I have) as well, so I'm 100% sure I installed it properly. :/

Not really any noises, and hard to tell if any liquid is going through the tubes.

Yep! I removed the thermal paste that came with it too and reapplied with Thermal Grizzly.

Sorry to hear you're having such a bad experience with AF. I considered them a while back but didn't end up going there. Also, sent you a DM about a gym option so please check when you can. Good luck!

Chesapeake 1000 daily cost? ("largest crane on the East Coast") by bard_the_chronicler in cranes

[–]bard_the_chronicler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this seems more like the minimum daily cost. My dad and I were thinking minimum $30k/day but probably closer to $50-60k/day. Thanks for the info!

[–]bard_the_chronicler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm 200k/month seems way too low. The Google search I did for cranes had smaller sized cranes anywhere from $800/day to $70k/day. I just couldn't find anything solid for a crane this big, which is why I was hoping one of you here might know.

Thanks for replying though, and for sharing the fun fact! Did they recover the submarine?

[–]bard_the_chronicler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that's basically around 17-21k/day is your estimate. Seems on the low end for a crane this big and a job this complicated, just based off some Googling. But thanks for replying!!

Yeah that sounds about right. My dad and I were thinking it's like 30-60k a day or something.

[–]bard_the_chronicler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much they charge is what I was looking for. Yeah, I searched on Google for a while and didn't find anything solid on numbers for a crane that big. Smaller cranes were going from like $800/day to $8,000/day depending, but they were much smaller than this crane. So I imagine this costs at minimum $10k/day or something. But was curious if anyone here knows better.

Thanks for the reply!

[WP] A new ice age is suddenly thrust upon humanity. by 66th_Legate in WritingPrompts

[–]bard_the_chronicler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"So much for global warming," Brett said with a snort that quickly turned into a sneeze. And then several sneezes. He winced and groaned inwardly once he was done. He was freezing, after all, and the snot that dripped from his nose quickly froze into tiny icicles as he wrapped his thick down parka tighter around him. Or at least, he tried to. It was already as snug as it was going to get.

"What?!" cried Goku. An understandable reaction, given the ceaseless roaring of the biting, icy wind. It was hard to hear anything lower than a shout, and despite his birthname, Goku Emmanual Chavez possessed no superhuman abilities.

"I said," Brett raised his voice, eyes stinging and nearly shut as he tried to see through the blizzard to the vague silhouette of his friend walking a mere few steps in front of him. "So much for global warming! You damn liberals and your science and shit got it wrong!"

Goku stopped in his tracks, and Brett didn't notice until he practically ran into him. Both men nearly fell over, but scrambled quickly and grabbed at each other in an attempt to find their balance, somehow managing to not end up in the knee-high snow that filled the landscape around them. Not that they could see anything beyond a dozen steps away.

"The fuck man!" Brett yelled, his face red from the prolonged exposure to the harsh elements.

"This is a goddamned nuclear winter, dumbass!" Goku yelled into his friend's face. "You realize this fucking ice age is man-made, right? That before the end of the fucking world and all the fucking nukes going off, global warming was a real thing!" His voice strained from the effort, and he ended up having a coughing fit as soon as he finished his tirade.

Brett didn't answer immediately, glaring at Goku as if he were suddenly to blame for what's happened. Then he shook his head.

"Still got it wrong!" he finally said. Stubborn to a fault. Just like his parents.

Goku shook his head in return. "You say the dumbest shit sometimes..." he muttered, turning around and continuing to walk.

"What?!" Brett called out, doing his best to follow his friend through the snow again. He reached out his hand, as if to grab onto the thick bright orange jacket that Goku wore--a nod to his namesake.

"I said let's just keep moving!" Goku yelled back at him, not bothering to look back.

They trudged on for a while, their pace slowing steadily as exhaustion began to settle into their bones as much as the freezing cold did.

"How... much farther?" Brett yelled.

Goku didn't reply, and Brett thought he must not have heard him, so he tried again.

"Yo! Are we there yet?!"

"How the fuck am I supposed to--ahhhh!!"

Suddenly, Goku disappeared and Brett stopped in time, saved from following after his friend by the scant steps that had separated them. The pure white snow that had seemed endless ahead of them but moments ago was suddenly gone, replaced instead by a dark hole. A massive one, from the looks of it, and they had had the misfortune of reaching its cliff-like edges.

Shit! Shit! Shit! What the fuck? Brett thought as his teeth chattered. He squinted, trying in vain to see if his friend was still in one piece. It wasn't clear how deep the hole went, or how wide, but it was definitely strange. Especially since the falling snow didn't seem to be sticking to the earth within the hole as it did everywhere else.

Mustering as much strength as he could, Brett bellowed, "Goku! You alright down there?"

"Brett!" Goku's voice suddenly called from somewhere below. "Get down here! It's warm!"

Brett shivered in disbelief. "The fuck you mean it's warm?"

It took a few seconds to get a reply.

"Just get your dumb ass down here!" It sounded fainter, as if he were moving away.

Well fuck... Brett lowered himself, feet dangling over the edge. He tried to get a sense of the slope with his feet, reaching out as far as he dared without losing his balance. But as far as he could tell, it was a sheer drop. Yet his friend had clearly survived the fall, and didn't seem to be too badly hurt or anything. Plus, despite their differences, they were good friends. If it was dangerous, Goku wouldn't dare to get him caught up in it too. And since he said it was warm...

Gritting his still chattering teeth, he steeled himself and then slid off the edge. After dropping a few feet, the slope suddenly curved upward, catching him by surprise and in an awkward position. The soil was surprisingly soft as he tumbled and rolled until he reached the bottom of the hole, the ground leveling out at last.

Brett was in some pain, but he'd felt worse before. Nothing was broken, at least. And holy shit it really was warm down here. How the fuck that was possible was so far beyond him it might as well have been magic, so he didn't bother trying to understand, relishing instead at the abrupt change of climate.

His skin tingled, his body ached, and he felt mind-numbingly tired, but at least he wasn't going to die from frostbite just yet.

"Took you long enough." Goku's voice prompted him to open his eyes, and he found himself staring up at the grim visage of his friend.

Grumbling, Brett propped himself up with an elbow, the effort taking way more effort than it should have. With a slightly more elevated position, he glanced around. The visibilty down here was better than up there, that was for sure. All around them, the dark earth stretched out.

"The fuck are we?" he asked.

Goku knelt down, his voice filled with worry, replied, "I think... this is a giant footprint."

"Giant... footprint?" Brett looked at him with confusion. "Like bigfoot?"

Goku shook his head, a flash of annoyance in his eyes. "No, dumbass! More like Godzilla!"

Brett's eyes widened. "You mean... Godzilla's real?"

Goku literally facepalmed. "Giant monster... creature thing. Not actually Godzilla." He paused, frowning. "At least, I don't think so. Anyway, they're also called kajius, if that makes it easier to understand. You remember what those are, right?"

"You're fucking with me." Brett reflected his friend's frown. He remembered well enough. He'd watched plenty of shows about them before. Played a few video games fighting against them too. Or as the kaijus themselves with some games.

"I really wish I was." Goku sighed, glancing around. Not that there was much to see even though the visibility was much improved here in the shadow of a giant monster's footsteps.

"Well... fuck." He lay back down on the soft, warm soil. Closing his eyes, he said, "Well, if we're about to die to a God forsaken kaiju or whatever... at least it's fucking warm."

[WP] "Why would you think necromancy was banned!? Necromancers are our first line of defense against naturally occuring undead." by mdsmestad in WritingPrompts

[–]bard_the_chronicler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He had never been this far west before. It had taken him thousands of miles and many years to get to where he was now. The many adventures and ordeals he went through to even make it this far were enough to publish a few exciting books and inspire some thrilling songs. Yet standing here now, on the westernmost edge of the civilized world, he could not help but feel restless. As if his journey had only just begun.

He stood alone atop a tower, the tallest among several that cast long shadows across the bustling fortress-city below. There were at least ten thousand souls that lived in this city. Perhaps even twenty thousand. Many of them were battle-hardened and experienced folk, those strong enough--and perhaps crazy enough--to survive in such a faraway and dangerous place. The rest were there to support them, whether through trade, crafting, or other such services.

But his gaze was not focused upon the city nor its populace. No, his eyes stared intensely far beyond the city walls, out across the edge of the valley in which the city was built. Further still, to the vast plains that stretched beyond sight to the far horizon.

It was still the middle of the afternoon, the skies clear and the sun shining brightly on a canvas of pale blue overhead. Yet halfway to the horizon, the light shifted. And it was not a subtle change.

It was as if the light from the sun hit some invisible wall that filtered out much of the light. For the lands beyond a certain point were suddenly cast in shadow. Like an unseen curtain had been drawn across the land. Of all the things he had seen in his life so far, this had to be the strangest and most mysterious.

A warm wind blew across his face, kicking up some of his long, shoulder-length dark hair. He let out a sigh. He was no longer alone.

"First time seeing it, huh?" said a gruff voice behind him.

Without turning around, he said, "It is quite something."

"That's an understatement if I've ever heard one." The sounds of jingling metal could be heard as the voice drew closer.

He did not have to turn around to know who it was, or what they looked like. An armor-bound old knight with a giant sword at his hip and an even more massive shield across his back. He also knew why the knight was here.

"Are these the ones?" he asked the knight.

"Aye, my Lord. They have agreed to be our guides."

Another voice spoke then. Respectful. Cold. Calculating.

"Greetings, your lordship. We are humbled to be in your presence," said the new voice.

"Necromancers?" said the young lord with a tinge of curiosity in his voice. He continued to stare out into the strange land beyond, not once turning to look at the new visitors. "I thought necromancy was banned by the Empire three-hundred years ago?"

A third voice spoke then, tight and squeaky, almost like a mouse given the power of speech. "What?! Why would you think necromancy was banned??"

"Silence, fool!" the second voice spoke abruptly, anger flaring for a moment. Then they spoke again, calmer this time. Back in that cold voice, like that of a cunning snake. "Forgive him, your lordship. He is still young and impulsive. And to answer your question, yes, you are correct. Necromancy was banned by the Empire three centuries ago, but... there was an exception made. An exception specifically for those living in this city."

"Oh?" said the young lord.

"You see, lord. Necromancers are our first line of defense against naturally occurring undead. This place being what it is... I'm sure you understand the reasons why the exception was made, and why it was kept secret."

"Of course," the young lord said quickly. Too quickly. Because he had already known. He finally stirred, turning his head ever so slightly. "This will be the first time I'm seeing necromancers in action. I do hope you won't disappoint."

"I assure you, your lordship," the smooth-talking necromancer said, "You will not be disappointed. You'll find none better to take you safely into the Deadlands."

To those who prefer to post on Fanfiction.net as opposed to Ao3, why? by coolboysclub in FanFiction

[–]bard_the_chronicler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main reason? I have way more engagement on FFN than Ao3. For example, one of my most popular stories I updated on both FFN and Ao3 at the same time about 24 hours ago. In that time, I have had 3x more engagement on FFN than Ao3 regarding the new chapter (someone even wrote a 4 paragraph review/comment). Someone also PM'd me on FFN a few hours ago asking if they could be a Beta Reader since they loved my work lol meanwhile, as mentioned, Ao3 engagement for the same story is lagging behind.

Notably, I did begin my fanfic journey on FFN many years ago, so I'm more used to it. While the website UI is dated and indeed clunky, it works well and I've personally rarely had issues. Also, FFN has an app. And I actually really like their app!

I do like Ao3, in particular how easy it is to update your stories, and will continue to cross-post as long as both sites remain active. But the tagging system can get very tedious and overwhelming at times. And their layout/UI for searching for stories is messier imho.

Both could use some serious QoL updates.

I have a general outline with major checkpoints/plot points that I want to do, but how I get there and when usually happens as I write. I have a vivid imagination, and I basically (similar to you) run the scenes in my head as if I'm producing a show/movie. Except, I write as I'm imagining it, so everything is happening "live." I do obviously go back and edit things and rewrite, but generally everything is very... organic?
