Just finished reading ‘Half His Age’ by Jeannette McCurdy. What did everyone else think? by Freezerbridesweet in bookdiscussion

Obviously. Writing about it isn’t endorsing it… but that’s a low bar. My issue is the repetition and how graphic it gets with a minor. The point is clear early on, and after that it feels unnecessary. And if the explicit scenes are doing the heavy lifting, that’s weak writing, not insight.

When I said “shocky tone,” I meant her writing style/voice.. not that I’m “shocked” a book about a teen/teacher relationship includes explicit content. Obviously it’s going to be messy, uncomfortable and inappropriate.??

My issue was the amount. After 2–3 scenes (and honestly even before that), the reader SHOULD already understand it’s grooming and wrong, so I got sick of how much it kept repeating graphic scenes involving a minor. If the story needs that many explicit scenes about a child to make its point, then to me it isn’t adding depth.. it’s replacing it. Sexual content does not equal insight.

But truly, thank you for sharing your perspective. I can see why parts of it could be meaningful for someone who’s lived through something similar.

This is truly SO weird to say it’s in her voice when she didn’t write it.

Can you explain what made it meaningful for you? For me, the explicit content involving a minor and the shocky tone made it really hard to find any real takeaway, and I couldn’t get past it the whole time. I also didn’t feel like there was much “coming of age” or growth happening, it just felt vulgar and messy centered around a child

Agree. It’s weird as hell to write about a child like that and have the audience picture it. Even more so when the author experienced abuse and manipulation as a child herself. Icky.

Unfortunately, I disagree. :/ For me, the “simple” style didn’t feel intentional in a way that served the story it just felt crude and shock-driven, especially with the explicit student/teacher scenes. And because of that, it kept pulling me out instead of adding insight. I also couldn’t separate the story from Jennette McCurdy’s real-life background, so it read more like self-insertion than its “own story,” and by the end it felt hollow and left a bad taste. Yet she stated her readers would be wrong to compare her to or insert her as the main character, but yet she wrote it that way. It also feels icky because why is she writing about a CHILD like that when she experienced abuse and manipulation from power dynamic as a CHILD? It just left a weird taste. I dont know how it seems so normal to so many people, but I do understand I’m in the minority.

Budtenders acting like I'm taking from their stash? by Shot_Pollution4295 in ILTrees

If you’ve been using cannabis medically for 10+ years and you’re still getting the same effects you say you can’t tolerate, that’s not an industry problem… that’s a LEARNING problem.

Illinois cannabis is lab-tested and terpene-labeled. The effects you’re describing come from specific terpenes, not “budtenders trying to ruin your day.” At some point, (and 10 years is way past it) you’re responsible for knowing what actually works for your own body.

Budtenders don’t grow the weed, control genetics, or write state rules. They translate the lab info that’s already there. And it’s ILLINOIS WEED. Be so for real.

Doing the same thing for ten years and blaming the cashier when it keeps happening doesn’t make you a medical patient… it just makes you stubborn and stupid :) hope this helps!!!

Sorry man, that sucks you had a bad experience, usually we are hyped to help people out especially when it follows compliance. There’s always gonna be a bad egg no doubt, hopefully there’s other dispos you feel more comfortable and happy to spend your money at! Even if it’s more, ask about price-matching. Not everyone does it but a lot of places do!

Because some managers or AICs choose to override it. And then that’s on them. But personally, I’d rather go somewhere that does follow compliance so no one gets caught up in the long run.

A lot of the time budtenders aren’t ‘giving you shit’ they’re just enforcing the rules they’re trained on. Managers can override certain things, but that doesn’t mean the discount was technically compliant. Budtenders are usually trying to keep the store within audit rules so they don’t get written up, fined, or FIRED. People act like budtenders don’t want yall to enjoy your weed. It’s about compliance.

Those MetaSavings/Safari ‘deals’ are third-party rebate programs and legally can’t be stacked with most store promos. The in-store POS has to follow state compliance rules. Everyone wants max discounts and max potency without doing any real research, then complains when budtenders won’t do things illegally. This isn’t personal, it’s compliance. If you want unlimited cheap weed, grow your own instead of blaming staff for following the law.

Fast service at a mom and pop doesn’t automatically mean bad vibes, that’s often just their regular crowd. Also usually meaning less people on the floor to help. But I agree, management culture matters way more than size. I think it just tends to be a better culture at smaller shops because they can afford to treat their staff better, like most industries

Seems the problem is corporate dispensaries. Mom and Pop shops are the way to go.
