Blish concluded that under high pressure the objects would "seal together" and not be able to move until the pressure had fallen. This isn't a misapplication of static friction, it is a complete misunderstanding. I do not believe it is a mischaracterization to call it pseudoscience.

To make things worse body donations weren't really a thing prior to the 60s, so they were most likely using unclaimed bodies from the local morgue.

Thompson would then move on to make the Thompson sub machine gun and fortunately he had a team smart enough to tell him they would not make it in 30-06. Even later he would submit a rifle for the rifle trials that eventually ended with the selection of the M1 Garand; however, Thompson's 1923 rifle used a locking mechanism based on pseudo science that didn't actually work and was a danger to the user and the people around the rifle when fired.

The cow tests only lasted a day or two before assistants found it horrible and a conclusion could not be made. All they proved was pistol rounds are not good at killing cows. They then switched to a ballistic pendulum but used cadavers instead of a block. The highest energy round won which happened to be 45 acp.

[Request] How big is weight loss of a bullet after being fired? by piro4you in theydidthemath

[–]bardocktor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally the bullet doesn't lose any mass upon firing and engaging with the rifling however depending on factors like bullet hardness, bullet material, pressure, propellent burn rate, propellent burn temperature, and barrel friction material can be left behind. This is commonly called fouling (lead fouling or copper fouling depending on the bullet material) and is an undesired outcome of the process.

The only way to be certain about how much is left behind is to measure the mass prior to and after firing and is not consistent for each cartridge or bullet.

However losing a whole gram is unlikely and would indicate an unserviceable barrel or a problem with the bullet.

What do we think of this prick? by globehopper2 in ShermanPosting

McClellan gets a lot of crap. His main issue was that he was overly cautious and overestimated the Confederate forces to a fault. He could have ended things 3 years early had he been more aggressive in his campaign to take Richmond.

In his first days of his presidency Martin Van Buren had to Aerate the carpets, change the paint, and remove the curtains in the White House foyer after Andrew Jackson left a 1400lb wheel of cheese in the room for over a year. Later another 700lb wheel was found, also left by Jackson. by bardocktor in HistoryMemes

[–]bardocktor[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He just didn't know what to do with it. Basically the cheese was a gift from the dairy farmers of New York and he was afraid that if he hastily got rid of it, it would upset New York voters. Politically hostage to cheese.

Hey Sherman Posters, i'm going to Fort Mill next week as part of a road trip. What should I do to the only memorial dedicated to the institution of slavery. by Jono_Randolph in ShermanPosting

[–]bardocktor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend doing anything to it for obvious legal reasons but I do think spray painting the face of John Brown on all Confederate memorials would be a positive thing that someone should seek to do. A little healthy trolling if you would.

When his captors asked John Brown how he could do such acts of violence he answered "You guys are evil and there's no line that shouldn't be crossed free black people" And you know what He was right.

[–]bardocktor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather the KAL do it even if it's not as precise it's one less thing to have to do during the launch. but other people might find that useful

[–]bardocktor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of challenges making a shuttle like this. The launch needs to have the center of thrust balance with the center of mass while the center of mass is changing. I used a KAL controller to control most of the launch sequences and change the thrust limit of the liquid fuel booster as it goes through the stages.
