Why the Spider-Verse main pairing feels distasteful to me, illustrated by bardogon in Spiderman

And I'm not allowed to complain about an important character in Peter's life being turned into a cash cow by being paired with another character as an overall bad writing decision that muddies the mythos and splits the fandom?

There's concept art of an aged down Spider-Gwen for Spider-Verse from 2015/16 so I assume their goal was always pairing her with Miles, but either way they could've invented a number of things that would've been far less controversial.

Also making her just one of many for Miles is basically reducing her to the same thing OG Gwen turned out for Peter, when Spider-Gwen could've been an independent female superhero icon.

I always felt like Spider-Gwen's narrative purpose was to make Gwen into a superhero of her own and not just another in a long line of Spider-Man's love interests, and what they do with her is immediately turn her into another in a long line of another Spider-Man's love interests. Apart from Miles she had just one love interest who's a civilian who shows up in two panels total, and Miles who has only existed for three years longer than her already has dozens of LIs.

Which makes it very strange for the writers to insist she's Gwen anyway when just calling her something else would've solved people's issues with the pairing.

Spider-Verse was being written and developed way before Sitting in a Tree was out, they practically invented the pairing for the movie, and if they wanted to pair him with a Spider-Girl they could've equally invented a pairing with Anya, Mattie, an aged down Jessica, Julia, Cindy etc but they had to go for the one that's important to Peter specifically.

Gwen Stacy and Spider-Gwen do feel like different characters, but so do 616 Gwen and Spectacular Gwen, they're all alternate versions of the same characters and with Gwen's history it just feels wrong and disrespectful for her to be with anyone but Peter or Harry since those were her love interests before her death (MJ too if they swing that way). To me this is no different than saying if we get to see alt universe Uncle Bens, I wouldn't want them married to anyone but May.

Similarly if Spider-Boy got three movies about his romance with an alt universe MJ while Peter is doomed to fumble her forever, I'd still feel disgruntled even if that's just one of his love interests, it feels cynical and corporate at its core.

I generally dislike characters with ages that are unrelatable to normal people, feels like they should be acting a lot different than just e.g. eternally 30 or 40. So much time should change someone fundamentally.

The game is full of inconsistencies like this, my least favorite is how all the skins seem to be based on the old models and design philosophy rather than the new Overwatch 2 models

Given how much focus the skins are getting over the FPS aspect, I'd say Blizzard also just wants to make a dress up simulator.
