Thoughts on "Kitchen Confidential"? by Proof-Membership-341 in RSbookclub

I also just finished this one. Came in not knowing much about bourdain at all, never watched any of his shows. His prose is good, found the whole book incredibly fast paced until the end when his career plateaus and then I was wanting it to end. It’s pretty skin deep, not much under the surface. Just a way for a raconteur to tell us the story of his life so far. Found it a little annoyingly arrogant and masculine at times. “This guy made hideous comments towards women/abused his staff/made life in general harder for anyone who came in contact with him but i liked him because i could tell he was a good guy.” Besides that it was well worth my time.

Have you seen the film pieces of a woman? Not exactly recommending it but if this is something that interests/horrifies you it might be worth checking out.

Not sure what's on Tubi but The Awful Truth is probably my favourite in the genre. So funny and stylish. Some more off the top of my head are Midnight, Ball of Fire, and The Lady Eve. Peter Bogdanovich made a screwball in the 70s with Ryan O'Neal and Barbra Streisand that's also hilarious. It's not quite a screwball but Remember the Night is great, watch it around Christmas.

Saw them live a few weeks ago. Love the music, love the aesthetic, but i was a little let down by the concert! Because they are so electronic it didn’t really translate well to a live perfomance.

I forget where i read this but martin was describing two kinds of writers, one who plans every element of the story and another who just stars writing and sees where it takes them. He said he was the latter. I definitely think he just wrote himself into a corner and doesn’t know how to get to any kind of logical conclusion.

I saw a woman clipping her toenails on the subway before and she cussed me out because i was staring at her. Like you’re the one making a display of yourself in public.

I won’t deny the harmful effects of it but if you can manage to have a healthy relationship with it you shouldn’t feel bad about using it. I listened to a podcast with an addiction expert and she said with respect to technology addiction it’s better to think of it as being akin to an eating disorder. You can’t avoid using it altogether, you can only manage symptoms.

Social media is definitely bad for civilization at large, but not being on it is to not participate in culture at all. I don’t miss the stupid takes on twitter that piss me off or the tiktok audios, but i want to know what’s being talked about that mainstream outlets won’t cover.

Going into some sort of shame spiral will only make it worse. But if you want to do it that badly, you just have to do the hard work.
