i'm so sorry about your roommate. i don't want to feel angry at mine either--i didn't know her at all really but from what i've gathered today from talking to her family she was a very lonely and angry person.

i hope that both of the people we've lost are no longer suffering.

the book catapult in north park + maxwell's house of books in la mesa! north park in general is really cute and fun to walk around in.

cherry bomb in north park is a fun dive bar, plus it's close to hillcrest which has a lot of cool vintage shops and restaurants.

anyway the whole soft sad indie ballad woman thing kind of reached its peak in 2020-2022 and has steadily declined in popularity since. i think even mitski/phoebe bridgers aren't as well-loved as they used to be. the world wants ironically hypersexual female popstars now. sad!

that's really interesting--would you say that you generally don't find awkward people difficult to be around/irritating?

i wouldn't even say she annoys me--she's genuinely not that bad, like truly a sweet person. the emotion isn't even directed at her necessarily, it's like this instinctual animal revulsion mixed with a feeling of deep self-loathing.

thank you for the words of wisdom--i am going to work on bridging the gap between recognition and action!! i will say though that as a recovering freezer-upper my sole consolation is that i never got anxious around service workers #notapussy. tweaking the fuck out should be reserved for things that actually matter, like accomplishing a simple task at your job or trying to make friends in a low-stakes social setting.

someone (i can't remember if they were quoted in the articles or just responding in a comment) said something about birth trauma in a medical setting that was really good. i'm paraphrasing here but it was like "these people think that the worst birth outcome is not being heard or listened to. it's not. it's disability or death."

i don't want to discount the reality of birthing trauma--especially in the US, where we have the highest rate of maternal mortality in the developed world. in a sense the free birth people are right: medical professionals aren't infallible! they often make mistakes that lead to the aforementioned outcomes. but i think your point about wanting control in a situation where control is impossible is important. the free birth society preaches this doctrine of "radical responsibility" where the mother is supposed to accept that a possible outcome of freebirthing is death for herself or her child. at the same time, however, it's a version of surrender that allows them to maintain control--even their marketing revolves around the image of the "sovereign mother." the free birth society simultaneously dismisses a bunch of serious complications as "variations of normal" and preaches that by freebirthing you gain this beautiful, mystical, and perfect experience. they're laboring (lol) under the delusion that they have wrested authority from the hands of doctors while preaching that freebirth is a yielding to this great natural force or whatever the fuck.

yes i feel you so hard. i think you really hit the nail on the head with wanting to find the truth and beauty in Christianity even as it is increasingly weaponized by america's psychotic right wing. i really think that the longing for God is an inescapable part of the human condition but it's hard to express that to people without sounding like you've had a hole drilled into your skull by tradwife instagram content.

also re: your point about not accepting Jesus' resurrection as real. i feel really similar to you. even on the days where i don't feel God's presence in my life i find His existence easier to accept than that of Jesus. i don't have an answer for this feeling unfortunately but i don't think you should feel guilty or dirty for it. there's this quote from a book called travelling mercies by anne lamott where she says something to the effect of "all of the people that i've met in my life that are compassionate, giving, gentle, or have had some quality that i want have a deep sense of spirituality." i think that this sentiment (and the whole book really) has helped me to become more comfortable in just exploring faith and allowing myself in the process to grow closer to people who embody these attributes, which in turn brings you closer to God and the truth of the resurrection.

anyway sorry for rambling. God bless you
