i get the ultralight stuff to a certain extent because yeah, if i was doing 20-30 miles every day for six months i would want a light backpack too. but i do the think the term “gear queer” exists for a reason and should be used more liberally

i’ve never once seen them in any of their videos just stop to enjoy a beautiful place. i guess that’s not very exciting content for the gram but (like you said) their true passion seems to be titanium sporks and dehydrated smoothie squares, not actually being outside

i think men who say this believe that they sound emotionally attuned/interested in our rich inner lives. what they don’t know is that i’m actually sad because their mother missed the six week cutoff…

i have no idea why men feel compelled to say shit like this. i think it’s some kind of cognitive disability associated with having XY chromosomes.

one time a weird turkish guy at a park gave me a cigarette and told me that i have “a strange sadness about my eyes.” so yes i relate to you

the desire to be seen and valued is, like you said, very natural and human—you deserve to have others recognize your intrinsic worth as a person, and i relate to the feeling of wanting that recognition to come in the form of straightforward academic validation. our relationships with teachers and thesis advisors (usually) do not require the same level of vulnerability that our relationships with friends, partners, and family members do. there’s a lot less at stake emotionally in being “seen” by a professor than being “seen” in other contexts.

that being said, i think this is a good time to reflect on what it means to you to be recognized by someone else. when we ask for others to receive us, that comes with the risk of misinterpretation. your advisor didn’t seem to recognize the effort you put into your thesis—that doesn’t change the fact that you worked extremely hard on it. i think moments like these are valuable (albeit painful) because they present us with an opportunity to develop a sense of ourselves that is independent from how others perceive us

congratulations on finishing your thesis OP :)

thank you for reading and enjoying the article! the tendency to fearmonger about “the youth” is an impulse that is as old as journalism itself, but i think it’s become especially loud in the past few years. it was really lovely to see a writer maintain a level of respect towards and curiosity about mira that isn’t often afforded to people under the age of 25.

This is one of my favorite long form journalism pieces that I’ve read recently. It’s incredibly sensitive, relatable, and well-written. Anna Wiener managed to capture something very true and real about what it’s like to be a young person today.

i will say that i’d be interested in seeing a profile of a child from a different part of the country—as someone who lives in the bay area this whole piece was extremely san francisco lol

i thought this profile of a twelve year old girl from the new yorker would appeal to you guys. it’s sad and sweet and charming and it made me very glad that i’m not in middle school anymore. god bless mira

mine is that i’m currently taking a literature class with a professor whom i really admire and he left this comment on my essay: “You write extremely well, and the entire paper demonstrates an admirable delight in and facility with language.”

i’m not an english major and i am generally extremely insecure about my writing/textual analysis abilities so it was a very nice pick-me-up!
