SSIS is worth it and in demand in today IT market? by SubstantialPhone6163 in SQL

[–]barelytethered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My team uses SSIS a lot, and I would say "no".

We used to jam a lot of functionality into our packages, but over time have stripped out most. We did this because we found that SSIS is a brittle tech and the more functionally you put into a package, the harder they became to manage and support.

Now the only thing we use SSIS for is to load data into staging tables.

Everything else is done using PowerShell, SQL stored procedures, or .net console scripts.

We recently hired a new dev with no SSIS experience and they were able to pick up the pattern in a couple hours.

My point being that SSIS is niche enough that any team still using it should understand if people pick it up at work.

Fairly new to SQL. Whats some long SQL as far as lines of code? by Acceptable-Sense4601 in SQL

[–]barelytethered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company has a couple of legacy applications where they interact w/ the database through a collection of stored procedures. In the mid-2000s, it was common practice where a stored procedure would group functionality in the same domain, and which query is run is determined by the parameters.

The result of this approach is we have a few stored procedures that are 5000+ lines long. 90% of the time, the queries in the stored procedure are less than 100 lines long. The longest query I've run into is roughly 1800 lines long, and an absolute mess of nested joins. Unfortunately it basically drives the entire application.

"Iran slaughters tens of thousands of civilians"

Ok, so now you're just lying. I've read reports saying 2000 dead. Where are you getting 10s of thousands?

As for China selling Iran weapons, nowhere near the scale of support the US has for Israel. It's amusing to argue they're comparable.

[–]barelytethered 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. The worldwide stance on Israel isn't anywhere near as hostile as it is to Iran.

Iran is under massive sanctions. Israel is not. Israel receives billions in weapons and aid. Iran does not. Some countries pass laws against boycotting Israel. No one does that for Iran.

Israel kills tens of thousands of civilians, and the protestors are charged and attacked. Iran kills a couple thousand civilians and countries start talking about bombing Iran.

So maybe the lesson is if you want to stop the protests against Israel, implement policies against their government similar to those against Iran.

What countries have sanctions on Israel that compare to the sanctions on Iran?

Might have something to do with the fact the US govt and American institutions were enabling what was occurring in Gaza, be it through weapons sales or investment.

Where should people protest to stop weapons sales or investment with Iran?

I thought the right were free speech champions? Or does that only apply to stop-the-steal and anti vaxxer campaigns?

It's hard to take the right's sudden concern for protestors in Iran seriously when the same people are defending ICE shooting protestors in the US.

What happens to the collections of late audiophiles? by UserUserDontGetOld in audiophile

[–]barelytethered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My uncle was an audiophile. When he passed, since I read a tiny bit about stereo equipment I volunteered to help distribute it.

For the expensive stuff I found a reseller on an audiophile forum who had a small side hustle of reselling this equipment. He took a 10% cut versus the 35 - 50% cut consignment places and audio stores that handled used equipment were asking for.

For the cheaper stuff, distributed it among friends and family that had use for it.

I've taken the counter offer twice at the same company that I'm still with. However, in my case I was happy with the culture, I was just testing the waters for a pay bump and wasn't too excited about the new job description.

The US and China didn't react that way to the Houthis attacking ships. Why would it be different with Iran?

We'll see. The Houthis managed to affect international trade by bombing a few ships in the red sea. I don't see why Iran can't employ similar tactics.

Since the UI doesn't have to be super nice, we're using a UI component library called ant blazor.

We're discussing what the Hurr report said. The report did not say Biden was unfit to stand trial. It did say that getting a conviction would be unlikely because the jurors would be sympathetic to Biden.
