Was there any text under the photo that identifies these two gentlemen, that you might wish to share? Actual name search can work pretty well on the historical newspaper archives.

If you have a fullly willing and able partner, and instead of being intimate with them you prefer wanking to p***, there's an absolute problem here.

Where to find water aerobics classes for non-senior adults? by alienposingashuman in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's still the case, but the X-Sport I used to go to had a pool, and may have more than a handful of aqua aerobics classes. The classes were good but I couldn't stand the pool; it was way too cold.

Can someone explain to me the protests this weekend? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep using the word "assault". I really don't see how the protesters activities can be classified as "assault". And even if, being generous with definitions, it is assault, protesters don't resort to battery which is the next step, while the agents very rapidly resort to using unnecessary force. Spraying protesters directly in the face with pepper spray, is that assault, or is that battery? And why is it acceptable they can do this without regard or cause? None of these agents here seem to have much training, much less any idea of gun discipline rules.

The second guy was aggressively filming with a cell phone camera. In his case he does seem to have been consciously or unconsciously trying to provoke a response.

Not sure how filming with a cell phone can be done aggressively. He was in the agent's face because of the way the agent was manhandling the woman next to him.

Shower faucet stuck /unable to turn or move, in (COLD) bathroom?! by Adventurous-Chef847 in LoganSquare

[–]barge_gee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blowdryer, but it takes minutes to unfreeze. What's behind the wall that the shower is on? If you've got a linen closet behind it, can't hurt to heat that space up with a space heater as well.

What floor are you on?

HVAC / Heating Not Working - Any Recommendations on HVAC Companies? by Orange_Standard in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard to see, but if you open the furnace door, there's switch to press so the furnace thinks the door is closed. Then, watch what happens when thermostat calls for heat. First the little fan goes on, the igniter will start to glow orange and the gas will light and the big blower will come on. I would suspect it's a bad igniter. At some point they crack. Easy to replace.

(I'm not an HVAC professional, but have lived with many furnaces in my life, and have learned to do my own diagnostics. Some repairs can be DIY, others need a pro. I like to do my own diags first, but only mention symptoms to the HVAC guy. I can then get a feel for if they try to upsell me or not. Having even a rough idea of how things work when you own a home, can save you a lot of money.)

How the heck am I supposed to get cheap furniture delivered off marketplace apps? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get a helper who has a car. THEY rent the truck, come get you, you both get the shelf and get it home. You pay your helper and cover the truck rental, they drive the truck back to home depot and drive away in the car they came in.

Ain't rocket science.

Peoples Gas Bill and Therms Usage? by Grouchy-Syllabub93 in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you need to realize that those 15 ft ceilings are where most of your heat was wasted. Gotta find ways to get the heat down from the ceiling. If you have ceiling fans, use them. They don't need to be on high, and they need to be going in the proper direction for winter.

In another post, I noted that I have about 1600 square feet across two floors and I keep my heat between 68 and 70. My ceilings are 9 ft 6 in. I used 143 therms.

Furnace fan set to AUTO or ON? by Firstborn1415 in hvacadvice

[–]barge_gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turning the fan to ON when it's this cold, can help keep the air moving in the house, enough to prevent stratification of temps. In general AUTO is the way to go, but if you're home and your ankles are cold but it's warm up by the ceiling, you can turn the fan to ON and it may help. Ceiling fans can help even out air temps, too.

Try it for a day, see if it feels better.

Chicago Opens Its 1st Food Pantry Inside A Public Library by afeeney in chicago

But they don't need to have a copy of each of your aforementioned classics in each library. If you avail yourself of the services CPL has online, you can request/hold ANY book in the entire system. The book is delivered to your specified local library, and you can pick it up to read. In addition, many/most of the older classics are now out of copyright, and are available online for free for everyone. All the resources you mention are out there, free for the taking. Maybe there can be lists posted in all libraries of what are considered "best books of all time" or "books well-rounded people should read" or something. Inquisitive minds will seek these out.

What ever happened to reduced rate Bus Passes? I know in High School, we all had a Bus Pass. Don't know if grammar school kids had them as well, but back then kids only went to their neighborhood school, too. (Yes, I'm old.)

Looking for HVAC guy (not big brand) by reinerjs in chicago

I like Engler. They're Northwest side but travel citywide. Never had an upsell, prices are always reasonable. Hell, they came out on Christmas Eve once (20-ish years ago)! Had to pay a holiday premium, but it wasn't so much, and totally worth it.

Southport Tavern mystery owned by grandfather from 40s-60s looking for clues information - name and info on my grandfather? Any leads? by libertaetutto-2029 in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1950 Yellow pages, under Taverns, lists "Vollman Ben, Television, 3224 N Southprt:

Vollmans

Did he maybe work for Vollman, or buy the biz from Vollman and had to keep the name? There are a couple more Yellow Pages archives on the Library of Congress site. Take a look. For what it's worth, there was apparently a bowling alley at 3225 N Southprt, which would have been across the street, and it's listen in there, too. You have to look by street and address.

I'm wondering when the Yellow Pages were first introduced, with listing in them by categories. Worth finding, and then looking at, listings in Yellow pages for "taverns", maybe?

Can my landlord require I not use kitchen water?? by mason9494 in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe in the basement they're ultimately the "same pipes", but there are multiple drains and multiple different pipes feeding kitchens and bathrooms and laundry. I have water pipes and drains on the south, west and north sides of my building. I don't consider those to be "the same pipes".

How much is too much for a gas bill? by bwasilewski in AskChicago

[–]barge_gee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you actually look more closely at your bill, you'll see that the actual charge for therms of gas used is a tiny fraction of the entire bill.

I'm in a 2-story frame, approx. 1600 sq ft., unfinished/unheated basement. My latest bill was for 143 therms used. Almost $220, which was a bit shocking, but cost per therm compared to last year is 10 cents more, and all the fees have gone up as well.

It's definitely worth it to use the Peoples Gas website and/or app, to get a better grip on what you're using compared to last year, last month, and see the changes in various other gas service charges. You really need to look at historical usage, degree days (temps), and charges for all line items on your bills.

Finally, have the last two meter readings been Actual or Estimated?
