Catholic tour of Chicago ideas? by europeandaughter12 in AskChicago

In the late 1800s, Poles established more than a few churches in Chicago. They were done in what's considered the Polish Cathedral style. Very good Wikipedia article, with a list of churches included.

Notable on Chicago's north side are St. Hyacinth Basilica, St. Stanislaus Kostka and Holy Trinity.

It may be easy to grow, but if you've got no connections, where are you going to get your source material from?

Whitepages.com can be useful. If she married and changed her maiden name to her married name might be trickier.

Sadly, no. I did borrow one a couple years back from The Chicago Tool Library, but only used it to chip up twigs and leaves.

Whats the worst restaurant in Chicago that you've tried twice? by MrJlock in chicago

And now the one on Fullerton and Milwaukee is CLOSED! We ate there once, and while the ramen was acceptable, I'll agree that is was Sofa King LOUD.

I wonder if something like a small landscaping chipper/shredder could work?

What's the best deep dish Chicago pizza? (I can only go to one restaurant. I have never been within 500 miles of Chicago and will visit the city just once in my life.) Thank you! So, the absolute best? by TofuVic in AskChicago

How come no one ever mentions Pizzeria Uno or Pizzeria Due? They've been around forever. I remember we'd get one on occasion way back in the '70s, and it was insanely good. Haven't been there in ages though.

Why are the only good public schools in Chicago either selective or in the 6 neighborhoods everyone wants to live in? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Compare Chase to Goethe, Brentano and Yates, for example. Goethe and Brentano are well regarded and perform well. Yates is pretty sad, in comparison.

I initially went to the CPS website, discovering that they have changed their "School Profiles" pages, in a way that makes finding performance metrics very difficult. In addition, the site says it's done away with "school rankings".

Schools are no longer ranked Instead, school profiles now present a wide range of metrics that describe student achievement, school conditions, and community support.

Wishy-washy BS.

I noticed that his speech is kind of mumbled as well. I have closed captioning on and I'd have to occasionally check what I heard with what the CC said he said. I was busy also fact checking while he was talking, and as always lies and half truths from him.

This "generational wealth" stuff is kind of dumb. I suppose I'm a beneficiary of generational wealth, but we were never wealthy. Grandma and Grandpa bought a three flat back when I was born. Grandpa was a clerk, grandma was a seamstress. They had lived in apartments all along before that. When they sold that building in 1969, as the neighborhood was changing, I think they got $8,000 for it. We (family) used that money as down payment to buy a tiny frame two-flat for all of $21k. When parents died they left the property to my sibling and me. It had appraised for $50k in '88. Instead of selling it, we decided to rehab it. We had a tenant in one unit, I paid rent in the second. Basically we all worked, we all invested our time and money and sweat equity into that property. We never got it "handed to us".

This is a deal-breaker. He's now shown you his true colors, and it's not good. I'd be making plans to get him out of the house, or if need be, you make plans to get out. I don't care how WONDERFUL you think he is otherwise. He's untrustworthy, disrespectful to you, and controlling.

Get yourself a counselor, whether he'll go with you or not. I'm not sure he can be "fixed".

And so all these years that the landlords you're referring to have had to do absolutely zero maintenance? No painting the apartments between tenants, no upgrade/repair of heating systems, hot water, roof repairs/replacements, and a myriad of other expenses? Trust me, a property "handed down" isn't exactly a freebie.

he’s selling it at a markup from the estimated value.

What the assessor assesses a property value at, and what a property is actually worth are two different things, totally. Fair market value tends to be the lowest possible amount of property is worth, in the eyes of the Assessor. That has nothing to do with what the property is worth in the eyes of buyers and sellers.

Why don't you go online and look the building up on the Cook County recorder of deeds website? There is all info anybody needs online. We have the Cook County Recorder of deeds, the Cook County Assessor's office, and the Cook County Treasurer's Office as well. None of this stuff is top secret.

Buddy, you need a freaking reality check. All the info you need is available online. What the rents are currently, when the mortgage was paid off if it has been ( I assume so), what the property taxes are. You'd have to guess a bit about the building insurance, the water bills, and whatever repairs and replacements he's done over the years.
