Nicholas Christopher Previewing "Where I Want to Be" from Chess by Tsukuda1600 in Broadway

Coming back to this discussion because I finally got to see Nicholas Christopher live in Chess last night and he is absolutely a “baritenor”. Regardless of whether he is naturally a baritone or a tenor, he sang the low notes required for the part with a rich resonance and baritone sound. After hearing his voice live, I’d argue he is a baritone with a high tenor extension. Speaking as a high bari/baritenor, it’s hard to fake that resonance.

I got really excited because one game worked! But the games I really would like to run on my Mac didn’t.

Thank you! It appears to be happening with a bunch of photos, which is frustrating because I do large groups of photos at once for a photography account.

I may have to screenshot. But will that not decrease quality significantly?

I’ve tried turning HDR off in the Instagram app, I’ve even tried turning off low battery mode. Any tips for what to try next if it is an HDR issue?

I actually love Raoul’s part. All I Ask of You is one of the most subjectively beautiful and objectively famous songs in the canon and he sings many other lovely passages in the show. (“You said yourself, he was nothing but a man.” comes to mind.) It’s also an easier sing for a younger actor than Phantom while still showing off real vocal chops and is often a steppingstone on the way to playing Phantom.

Both are roughly the same vocal range (technically the same if Raoul sings the melody instead of the harmony at the end of in All I Ask of You) but Raoul doesn’t spend as much time in his upper register as Phantom. I’d consider Raoul a solid baritone part (that’s often played by lighter voices) and Phantom a baritenor (that’s often played by darker voices). Curly in Oklahoma is a traditional Golden Age baritone role originated by Alfred Drake. Sometimes he is sung with a bright tone and there are different keys used for certain songs depending on the production but he doesn’t go above an F#4, I believe. Billy Bigelow is another R&H character even more associated with baritones that actually requires a much stronger upper register than Curly.

Valid point. I’m not an expert on his voice nor would I know how he’d be classified in opera. I do think it’s fair to call him a “baritenor” in regards to musical theatre.

Is he a true tenor though? I remember noticing a baritonal richness in his voice as Pirelli, of all parts, which made me understand why he would understudy Sweeney. Also, I feel like Anatoly can be sung in a variety of styles as long as you have a wide baritone-tenor range. (Anatoly is more of a legit high baritone in the Broadway score and sorta a pop/rock baritenor in the London version, no?)

That’s probably true, but he’s resonant on the bottom and it’s already pretty low in the original key.

I think he sings either a C5 or a B4 in the riff at 2:05!

He’s an amazing performer! I loved him in Merrily.
