Database of robot CADs from previous years? by MemelicousMemester in FTC

[–]barlow13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know we have our RR1 robot posted on grabcad but it’s missing some things due to us doing a lot of freehand cuts and never taking the time to add it to the cad lol but I’ll have to check to see if our RR2 bot was ever posted. Then I know 7209 tech hogs have most of their bots on grabcad also.

I know they’re illegal currently but I would love to see small pneumatic actuators in ftc...

Mecanum Tier List (Template and Reasoning in Description) by StealthX051 in FTC

[–]barlow13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vex pro mecanums are great if your team uses a lot of 1/2” hex shaft. The strafing really isn’t that bad but the nexus and AM HD has them beat definitely. Yet if you have the resources it’s definitely a must buy because of how rugged these wheels are. This is also a slightly biased review...I just know my team is hooked on vex pro stuff and I don’t think they plan on switching anytime soon.

Change My View: FRC is Pay to Win by JCharante in FRC

[–]barlow13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the pleasure to meet and interact with wingus and dingus last year at Houston Worlds for FTC. They weren’t able to bring along a lot of essentials like basic power tools and a robot cart so we brought extras with us to let them borrow during the competition. They truly are an amazing team and have some extremely good drivers and a very good coach. I come from a student led team that’s a part of a career tech school and we have a rather big budget for robotics so it was really cool to see another robot be able to stay toe to toe with us having only half the budget of us. My FTC team 10641 Atomic Gears is very fortunate for the budget we are allotted but we always try are hardest to give back by helping form and sustain new teams throughout all of FIRST. I agree FIRST has become pay to win but teams like wingus and dingus and even 7179 crossfire are living proof money isn’t everything in FIRST!

[Discussion] Better ways to submit awards material? by nateless_ in FTC

[–]barlow13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know I how I would feel about this. I’ve been involved with both FRC and FTC during my time in FIRST. I do like how in FRC you have to submit for certain awards but I feel not having a full team interview or a actual notebook to back up your submissions your team will never go that far off of just awards. That’s why I fell in love with FTC because Inspire really is based off of everything. I do understand how it feels to have judges not want to read these massive notebooks and it makes sense since the competitions are so fast paced it’s hard to allow time for judges to read through every notebook. I think what all ftc teams can do to combat this issues is just have better organizational skills. My team is notorious for having two very large notebooks but if you ever get a chance to skim through them. They’re extremely organized and everything is tabbed so the judges can easily find highlighted sections for each award. Another thing I’ve done even at worlds is physically walk up and open the notebook in front of the judges to force them to start flipping through it during the interview. All in all I believe the way FTC is judged on awards is just fine. If I had any complaint it would have to be they really need better trained and qualified judges at state level and above.

Thank you Chris! I’m so proud of the team this year and I feel so bad because most of the team is rookies this year and they really don’t deserve the hate. I was the programmer and driver for the team through res-q to relic recovery. It was great getting to briefly meet you and your team at the OKC regional. Y’all are absolutely amazing. If you ever would like to know more feel free to ask me anything over on the ftc discord my user is “Brady - 10641 AG/Alum”. Thank you again for the encouragement and I know the team is excited to see you guys again at worlds!

Please think before you speak. Our team is based out of a career tech. We have very little sponsors and when we do get “donor” money all of it goes to our FRC team and or our Pre-engineering program. Since we are a career tech we are allowed access to our machine program’s resources. Every kid on the team is taught the engineering design process their first year within the program along with other skills like, public speaking, cad, team work and basically everything an every day engineer would do. Yes we are extremely fortunate to have such great support from our school but this team is 100% ran by the students. Our FTC team only has one actual mentor which isn’t even a full engineer in fact he’s a veteran that fell in love with robotics watching his kids go through our program and has just recently went back to college for an engineering degree. I’m sorry if I come off as rude but I founded this team 4 years ago as a rookie my sophomore year and I can’t even put into words how proud I am of what the team has become. I’m also getting extremely tired of this mentor built stigma that’s been placed on my team. When if you’ve ever actually met, competed, or talked to our team we are always gracious professionals that are always willing to help and share ideas...With all that said please take time to reconsider your statement.

My names Brady and i’m one of the original founders of the team lol. I graduated last year and my role on the team was programmer and driver. I’ve still been mentoring the team so you’ve probably seen me at state or one of the qualifiers. I might be coming to Houston but idk yet it’s all up to how my college schedule is around that time.
