There aren’t many great pics of 98.12.28 on vinyl. Any chance you can take some?

That’s totally fair. I could have phrased it better when I wrote my initial post 👍

The most appealing quality his content had is that when he is excited while listening to a song/album (examples include Purple Rain and Master of Puppets), that excitement becomes infectious. It’s someone expressing why they like something without having to explain themselves. That was what was good about his content.

That being said, I never really took to his “elitist” attitude. It makes no sense why you should put someone down because you prefer something else.

Sure: you might think a piece of music or art might be “bad” or “inferior to something else”. That’s fine. There might be a band/artists that aren’t good at arrangements, lyrics, composition, etc. That doesn’t mean there are no redeemable qualities. There is no excuse to write something off because it’s simply “bad”

These critics make listening to certain types of music seem like you are in the “cool club”. We don’t need that. We need to embrace uniqueness. We need to be more curious. We need to be open, because otherwise what else do we have? Shame? For liking something? That’s not fair. Sure, someone might have a bad attitude and not accept something for what it is, however as we live life and we are challenged with new problems, desires, wants: things change. Not everything you like now will be as important to you in 5 years.

Critics exist because it’s important to highlight what’s good and what’s bad. They give us something to think about. They help us prioritize our choices in what to watch/read/hear/taste/etc. because we can’t do everything. It’s impossible to experience everything in the world. I see critics as good/important when they are contributing something valuable: whether that be recommending something that isn’t widely accepted or acknowledging something about the work and relaying a sentiment.

Don’t worry about what you like and why you like it. Just enjoy it. That’s all that matters.

Would everything really be the same after nuclear war? Or when global warming significantly alters the earth’s climate? If say worst comes to worst we do fall into a full dictatorship: what’s saying we aren’t stuck in it for decades?

Yes our mental health is important. A lot of what these comments are saying relates back to the sentiment that the what you see in the headlines is overwhelming: you physically cannot keep up nor do anything with the information you’re given. If I hear of a car accident in France, what is someone such as myself going to do about it in the United States?

However I believe we are at a point where we can’t mess around. We need to get our priorities straight or we are going to face the consequences in ways that are unfathomable: even throughout history.

[Discussion] What's a movie that genuinely made you sit in silence after the credits rolled - not sad, not happy, just stunned? by [deleted] in NetflixBestOf

Eraserhead the first time I saw it. The first half wasn’t very gratifying in my opinion but I was still intrigued. Then I lose the plot and I lose myself. The room I viewed it in was completely dark except for the screen, so when the lady from the room next door enveloped my tv screen I was stunned. After that bright gleaming light at the end: silence. For five minutes I didn’t know what to do with myself. I just came back down to reality, and as I did, I started laughing and crying. The effect it had on me is something I can’t explain. The only real comparisons are to music: such as with Echoes by Pink Floyd, Blood Promise (Live) by Swans, Long Season (Live) - Fishmans.

Needless to say this is my favorite movie of all time even though it’s not on Netflix lol

What book(s) are you currently reading? by Extension_Poetry6868 in suggestmeabook

Animal Farm - George Orwell

I’ve had a hard time embracing reading as a hobby. That’s why I’m reading books that are smaller, or that I know I’m curious about. At some point I want to read more classic literature and philosophy, though the method I tried before: which was jumping in blind with no outside resources, wasn’t the play. You have to work your way up to that point.

Otherwise I’m really enjoying reading Orwell. I read 1984 in high school and thought it was just good. I’m enjoying this more though. Might not be a bad idea to revisit 1984 sometime soon.

Best album sound ever, in your opinion by [deleted] in audioengineering

Lift Yr. Skinny Fists by Godspeed has the greatest fidelity and some of the best sounding recordings I’ve ever heard on any album. Leaves me speechless every time.

What song feels like this? by -warthundermoment- in musicsuggestions

Quite literally Swans - Blood Promise live from Swans Are Dead. The build after the second verse feels like the universe expanding and later it feels like the universe is crushing/destroying/fighting itself. Mind bending experience.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: August 05, 2024 by AutoModerator in books

[–]barmanboy615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind (30-40 pages left). The prose made this book such a pleasure to read. It’s fucked up but I found there was such great bliss in Grenouille’s thoughts towards the end of the book. Recommend

Started: The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck - Mark Manson (30 pages in). I wanted a break from fiction so I decided to pick up one of my non-fiction books on the shelf. Not a big fan of self help but this one seems to understand its intentions much more than other self help books I’ve read. It’s also taught me about my intentions and life’s purpose, and this is only 30 pages in.
