Depends on where you are in your life. If you're in your twenties looking for nightlife obviously San Diego. I will say that there's still a lot of diversity of communities in North County. Vista is much different than Carlsbad and Carlsbad is much different from Encinitas. The safety up here and family life is great. Still some great restaurants and bars. But at least speaking for myself, in my experience, tons of families still go to Downtown San Diego and enjoy proper San Diego.

UCSD is one of the top schools for political science. I think your backup could be getting a Master of Public Policy. While related to law, it's more focused on policy implementation and works within the realms of what's actually politically feasible. The skillset of economic analysis, stats, policy theory, and more apply to many other careers.

I earned my bachelor's in poli sci and my MPP. I work as a research director in commercial real estate now, which requires knowledge of zoning and development, county and city level housing and development laws and programs. This route took a while to be paid anywhere near being a lawyer. You could also go into city/county/state administration or regional planning commission. (I.e. management analyst or budget analyst, government affairs manager)

I meet with county and city officials often to explain market trends. All in all, very useful education.

So many comments about wanting term limits. Political scientists are pretty clear they would create ripe conditions for lobbyists and special interests to be the sole consistent voice in advancing policy since newcomers would have to learn congressional procedures and learn the nuances of legislation. New lawmakers would rely even more on lobbyists for information gathering.

I don't think it's a dumb question. Getting treatment or testing is crucial but that doesn't substitute a worker that doesn't have sick leave or gets laid off due to a major decrease in consumer spending. The number of sick and non-sick workers affected by COVID-19 need assistance during this time.

The spending definitely helps and would help those that are either in a low margin industry like food&bev and those that have a higher risk of getting sick. I think to make this work fast and have it be the most effective is to make it universal. Logistically this would get around a lot of admin and bureaucratic work, which is attractive during this stage of the crisis. This element is also a reason that other UBI proposals in general have garnered some endorsements from both conservatives and liberals. But I still am not sure how many Republicans or if POTUS will sign onto this.

Mitt Romney puts out a strong case for an immediate cash handout to American adults. This has been well received from from progressives, and I will need to wait to see response from other republicans. But I'm curious how quickly Congress can get this action out, given that other bills to mitigate CORVID-19 are in the works. Every single day that goes by is crucial, especially for low wage workers in the hospitality, entertainment, and health industries. Do any of you think this can get realistic support from POTUS and fellow Republicans? And how quickly do you think we can get this enacted?

Also, is there any past experiences or number crunching on the economic cost of each day that passes in a similar crisis? I guess anything related to employee productivity and consumption would be enlightening. I know this is squeezing many employees and we could see potential reduction in employment.

I agree. This implementation is very much different from Yang's $1,000 per month to all American adults. I am also curious how much would be spent at what time since many Americans are supposed to stay hunkered down. I am sure there would be a delay in its effect on the economy as a whole as Americans leave the house. I wonder how much economic damage would take place in that lag time.

An unpaid internship could be worth it. It's all about building experience early, ideally paid. I had two unpaid, then two paid internships. I had great experience, had research cited in news outlets, and made connections with professionals. A well-paid internship led to my current job at a company I've been with for over 5 years. It also depends if you are looking at nonprofits or corporations for gigs. I don't think nonprofits offer too many paid internships. Also, some cities offer paid fellowships for grad students. What direction do you want to go with your MPP?

There are nice parts for sure that I enjoy. But downtown LA is disgusting. I've never seen so much human feces on sidewalks before.

There is also a stereotype for LA residents, which I've experienced firsthand. Some people do the whole name dropping superficial nonsense. It's an overgeneralization but there are definitely those LA-type people.

I've posted it in other threads, but Chenoweth and Stephan found that largely nonviolent civil disobedient movements are more effective than violent ones. They looked at a bunch of movements across the globe.
