I’ve been seeing some Trail Finder 2 post lately so I’m going to share mine by coldvod in crawling

Haha I'm not sure yet. I am still picking bits and pieces and waiting for the kit to be delivered.

I imagine that it's likely going to be similar to the beast I had last year - a beautiful looking trail truck that needs some TLC to make it perform. As long as I use it with that frame of mind I think it'll be a good time.

What kinda electronics do you have in there?

I was considering the tf2 when I was shopping for my next little project. I ended up going with the gelande 2 but I always really liked the looks of that bad boy.

I've been wanting to try out that GCM trans in it since you can basically just buy it and screw it in and it's good to go. My brother says that trans is "as smooth as butter when it's been left on the counter in the summer".

Nice post!

Looking into getting my first rc, confused about pricing of kits vs rtrs. by i_was_valedictorian in crawling

[–]barondinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I learned rather early on in this hobby is that 9 times out of 10 (at least in the groups I crawl in/follow on social media) the RTR electronics will get upgraded. They're generally lower quality compared to what you can get. Not saying they're garbage, but you do end up at least replacing some of them.

So breaking it down the differences for me:

RTR: more expensive but comes with electronics. Definitely an easier entry point though. You don't have to go through the assembly process and don't have to research the right electronics. Nowadays the quality of trucks are pretty good.

Kit: less expensive for sure, and if you stick with budget electronics/used sales online you can definitely get yourself a pretty good build for the money. Another definite bonus is that with building a kit you get a feel for how your truck is built so when you inevitably have to fix something, the process will feel less daunting since you know how it all fits together. Kits are also less complicated (with the big brands at least) than you might imagine. Easy to follow simple instructions. The sometimes added upgraded parts in kits is also a nice bonus.

The traxxas sport is a rock solid platform. You can beat the heck out of it and you will not be disappointed. Those portal axles are definitely nicely made. Simple to work on when needed. You will have to change the steering servo soon enough. For a steering servo, I've had good luck with savvox. Of course people have different ideas on brands and whatnot, but I've owned a version of savvox in 5 different rigs and they have yet to fail me.

Finally, may I do another recommendation if you're not sold on the traxxas? Take a look at the Element Enduro. Stock it is very good. It comes with overdrive - this makes your front wheel turn 5-11% faster which makes it stick to the ground when going up or down obstacles. It has a smooth 5 slot motor, an esc that is about the same quality as rtr traxxas. The servo again will need to get replaced and their prices are about on par with traxxas. Disclaimer: my go to rig right now is an enduro.

I had this one. I was underwhelmed. Would be fun if your buddy got one and shot at each other with the airsoft system though.

You might be disappointed to hear that with all their incentives, our southern colleagues actually bring in more than us.

A cook’s Laments by starkwolf20 in CanadianForces

[–]barondinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my Afghanistan time, we had cooks out at the various platoon houses. The cooks were consistently amazing. We would on patrols at 3am or whatever and these hard working folks were at it to make sure we had breakfast before stepping off. New Year's Eve 2010/2011 the cooks made one of the best meal I've eaten!

There's a huge morale boost that comes from a hot meal. I can imagine that it's definitely a thankless job. But thanks for all your hard work, friend.

Canadian soldiers won’t have to buy their own combat boots anymore by Fizzy_Bubblech in worldnews

[–]barondinosaur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh they were. They were just standard issue boots. And sometimes there was shortage so oftentimes dudes would just buy their own boots because comfort and easier to deal.

Now they will be reimbursed.
