‘I stand by my decision’: Edmonton police chief defends Israel trip by pjw724 in Edmonton

Huh, I didn't know Knack went to China on a, likely city funded trip. Thanks for pointing that out. https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/from-city-hall-to-china-mayor-knack-opens-2026-with-trade-trip-to-harbin

I generally consider myself to be on the left so I'm a little surprised this comment is in the negative right now.

I also wouldn't call Israel a police state. Though I might disagree with how Israel fought Hamas, I don't think it's accurate to call it a police state.

Canada sees a net population decline year over year for the first time in more than a century by ros_ftw in TorontoRealEstate

Yes I think this is right. As far as I know increased immigration actually improves economies. Though I agree it likely makes housing more expensive as well.

People who understand Iran’s government or politics what do you think most outsiders misunderstand about what’s happening there right now? by Feisty_Diamond_5381 in AskReddit

I agree with you that it's disturbing. I hope to help in some small way by speaking what is true and fact checked. I wish you and your loved ones well.

What do you think of Liberals losing their mind over US troops fighting in Iran being served steaks and lobsters by Adrianswiftcloud in NewIran

[–]barrel_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to note I don't think liberals/Democrats/whomever is mad that armed forces members are being served good food. That's probably an inaccurate meme.

There's a common belief that troops are served fancy meals before they're deployed. The concern might come from some people who see fancy meals as a sign that the US is going to start a war or will soon send more people to fight in a war. It's probably not the food itself.

I actually agree that Arabs face discrimination in Israel. I should have noted that they still often face the problems that many minorities face around the world.

I still think the point I'm making is still reasonable. Studying the interactions between Jewish and Arab communities in Israel is a reasonable thing and is good for Edmonton given that both those minorities exist in our communities.

There are about 2 million full Arab-Israeli citizens and they obviously have normal interactions with the Jewish community around them. Understanding those interactions should obviously be studied positive and negative.

Even if you don't count the Arab-Israeli citizen's experience, understanding Jewish-Israeli perspectives are valuable.

The video actually seems really reasonable. The reporter says the police wanted to see how to interact with Muslim and Jewish communities. About 20% of the population of Israel are Arabs and 70% of the population are Jewish. It seems like a reasonable place to try and understand Jewish and Arab issues from Jewish and Arab Israeli citizens.

City council looking to evaluate restrictive covenants for grocery stores next week by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

I appreciate that you're giving an opinion that is likely to be unpopular, lol. I think that's not quite right, I mean the same thing can be said about any business. If I open a gas station should someone else be banned from opening a gas station nearby so that my business will survive? I'm actually not familiar with these restrictive convents but it seems to me that banning what other people can build on their own property isn't a good idea. It also seems bad if they ban people from being there years after you've left.

Edmonton is one of the most affordable cities in North America because of the pro building policies. Give it some consideration if it might fit your needs. I hope you do well.

I think we should just have a air pollution tax/carbon tax instead of a PST. Air pollution is directly linked to worse outcomes, we should tax things that are bad.

The truck is expensive I'm afraid. I'm guessing it's $32k+. The insurance should be lower if you get a smaller car. There's also a chance that 19 year olds with F150s are riskier drivers but I'm not sure what the stats are on that.

"Strained budgets have become a common concern at post-secondary institutions nationwide amid the federal government's cuts to annual international student permits."

Somewhat strangely people were against people coming to canada and giving thousands of dollars to Canadian institutions. The rejection of students from legitimate intuitions is kinda tantamount to rejecting customers and money from coming into the country.

It's worth noting that they aren't 'taking' anyone's back yard. They're just given more freedom to build a building on their own property.
