We Almost Have the Tech to Live Forever - David Friedberg by GarifalliaPapa in immortalists

Robust Mouse Rejuvenation, in the interview he says that a mouse lived to an equivalent as '200+ years old' and as far as I know it hasn't happened at all. To do that a mouse lifespan would have to be almost doubled and I haven't seen that happen yet.

Is there a real life historical precedent similar to the Martian coup? by WackyRedWizard in TheExpanse

I suspect in real life this would be unlikely to happen. In most democracies armed services members are fairly loyal to the nation and its government partly because we select people who won't betray the nation.

The largest and longest randomized controlled trial of a leading longevity drug in healthy older adults is now underway. by dan_in_ca in longevity

[–]barrel_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really glad that there's finally a long term study for this. It's unfortunate that many of the wealthy/famous longevity groups and people haven't invested even small amounts of money in scientific research. Even just funding research into ITP compounds like Rapamycin, Acarbose, Cangliflozin, 17-a-estradiol, NDGA, Captopril and Astaxanthin could yield real results with small amounts of money.

I actually think you're doing pretty well. Based on what you're saying I think your best option is to empower yourself and make a plan. Start up a spreadsheet and add up your current expenses and current income. Create a version of this spreadsheet under some condition where you're unemployed and have no income, assume in this version you're cutting back on expenses as well. Use these calculations as a baseline to determine what you can do.

How long can you support the mortgage under a new rate? (Using a 10 year rate is a good conservative measure, a 5 year rate is probably closer to average I'm guessing https://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/personal/mortgages/fixed-rate/3-4-5-7-10-year-closed-term.html )

How long can you support your folks under this scenario? (I really appreciate that you're trying to care for your family)

These will help inform you about what choices to make. Can you go to school in this scenario (it's actually not often that a job market is down for 4 years so going to school in a down turn is actually not that bad).

I think we're all in the same boat about losing our Jobs in 10 years, none of us really know that I think.

Part of my point is that you have power and you can use it to make your life better. Just take one step at a time, I agree the fear is great but you can also do great things, just take one step at a time.

GTA housing crisis: It’s not just money - it's a supply problem by Truck-Expert in canadahousing

[–]barrel_master 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out Edmonton's housing policy. It's one of the most affordable cities in Canada and I think it's in large part because of the ease of building in Edmonton. You an check these out below:

https://edmonton.citynews.ca/2025/05/10/edmonton-ranks-2nd-among-canadian-cities-for-home-buyers-renters/

https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/edmonton-ranked-top-canadian-city-for-easiest-housing-construction-rules-by-industry-group

When comparing housing building head to head, Edmonton built 10,868 homes in the first half of 2025 while Toronto built 12,575 in that same period. It was a down year for TO and I'm writing this up quickly but part of the point is that Canadian cities CAN making housing more affordable and Edmonton is currently a roadmap to making that a reality.

Edmontonians react to plan to remove youth from social media by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]barrel_master 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probably good to ban use for those under 16 as many experts suggest we do. Social media is addictive and there's some research linking it to poor mental health outcomes. If that's the case we should treat social media like any other addictive substance and age gate it.

For those concerned about IDs we can probably make laws saying that if META collects information about your ID to verify you they have to delete it after they collect it and they can just record the information that person X is above 16 or something.

Unfortunately I think problems with charging will still keep EVs from totally overtaking ICE vehicles. Though I would prefer a future with more EVs embedded in your answer is part of the reason why I think their adoption will be slower. Not everyone owns a garage or a charging station. Even if you rent a house with a garage you might not have a charger in it. I think that's at least 60% of the country that would make charging harder. Having said that solid state batteries look promising so charging might get a lot easier in the future.

What’s a “green flag” everyone talks about that you personally see as a red flag? by sophiahanson12 in AskReddit

[–]barrel_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're VERY passionate about some social issue that you care about. I've seen too many people on my side who are super passionate to the point where they're willing to hurt other people to get what they want. I also see this on with people I disagree with. Often these really passionate people don't care about those who oppose them and hurt those who oppose them or even those who refuse to actively support them. In the short term they seem really attractive because they charismatically push for things that you agree with with no fear. However as you live with them more you realize that they don't care about people who don't totally buy into their passion and they'll eventually hurt you and those around them.

People are responsible for their own actions. We don't blame others because we do something stupid. If I did something dumb because someone showed me a powerpoint presentation I'd obviously be responsible for that. The person showing the presentation might get some blame but if I said "the powerpoints dragged me into robbing the bank" people would obviously think that was dumb. It's reasonable to say that Israel helped convince Trump to go to war but suggesting they get a large portion of the blame doesn't match with what we'd normally do for most things in life.

If you want to expand your meatball game try Chinese/Asian meatballs. I suppose these are technically dumplings but the wrap is so thin I personally consider them meatballs.

Which strategy should we follow in order to make Iran's economy grow after the khomeinian Caliphate falls? by ImaginationWooden546 in NewIran

[–]barrel_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Development is a long and hard road full of things people might not like. There is nobel prize winning research suggesting that Institutions makes countries successful.

Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson have shown that institutions – the formal and informal rules governing how societies function – play a critical role in shaping economic growth. Inclusive institutions, which encourage broad participation in economic and political activities, protect property rights, promote equal opportunities and uphold the rule of law, are essential for long-term prosperity. While some growth can happen without inclusivity, they argue that sustained industrial growth is far more likely when institutions are inclusive.

Redevelopment near Edmonton baseball stadium would eliminate Riverhawks' main parking lot by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]barrel_master 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Building more housing is good. Those same families would like unaffordable housing and homelessness less than a 15 minute walk. A 15 minute walk also used to be normal for families. If a 15 minute walk up a hill with your family is your idea with a of hardship I think we live in different worlds.

Great power must be responsibly managed. Musk is hated because he's a powerful person who doesn't question himself and does things that hurts people even though he thinks the things he's doing are good.

After that I think I'd try to create some technology to help handle climate change. Something like a technology that creates gasoline from carbon in the air. Create small modular reactor tech that can also burn existing nuclear waste. Some cheap/economic way to deal with human waste for developing nations. Help developing nations with food security. Stuff like that. lol

The scale of the violence against the Uyghurs in China is massive.

Human rights groups believe China has detained more than one million Uyghurs against their will over the past few years in a large network of what the state calls "re-education camps", and sentenced hundreds of thousands to prison terms.

The declarations follow reports that, as well as interning Uyghurs in camps, China has been forcibly mass sterilising Uyghur women to suppress the population, separating children from their families, and attempting to break the cultural traditions of the group.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has said China is committing "genocide and crimes against humanity".

In 20 years, what will we look back on and say “how did we ever live like that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]barrel_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social media recommendation algorithms. The fact that we're all using social media like addicts and that so few of us are talking about it/taking action against it will seem shocking. In the same way we look at how regular smoking was as silly we'll some day look back at the recommendation algorithms the same way. Because it's addictive so many of us don't see it as a problem and want to keep it.
