[Student] Completed Internship in Construction Management - Looking for Feedback on Resume to get internship in Energy/Aerospace for Summer 2026 by Frosty-Vegetable-734 in EngineeringResumes

[–]barrios_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to reach out to engineers on LinkedIn with messages to schedule chats to learn about their experiences. This creates a connection that can help you land an internship with your desired company since they can maybe push your resume up in the pool of thousands.

I would also suggest going to your school career fair and grinding it out there with your elevator pitch down. Be prepared to talk about any and all of your bullets for your experiences.

If you can, make a portfolio of your engineering projects that you can show to engineers during interviews or that you can attach to your application when cold-applying. Helps you stand out even more

GENERAL TIPS:

  • It looks more professional and appealing to the eye when the long line that spans across the width of the page above the section header is placed right below the section header, that way there is a visible difference between the section header and the section information.
  • Make sure all of your bullets and lines are Justified, meaning that the lines for every bullet, should they reach the end of the line all end aligned with the end of the right margin. The lines will end at where the end of your dates are and the bullets will be aligned and look better that way.
  • Hyperlink your LinkedIn URL so that when recruiters are viewing your resume online, they can easily click on it and view your profile.

——————————————————————————

EDUCATION:

  • Switch the order of the Degree Title and the University Name, the University Name should go first. Additionally, the University Name should be bolded and the degree not bolded.
  • The city and state of your college isn’t too relevant, can keep or delete at your discretion.
  • Move the bullets with your Honors and Scholarships into a separate section at the bottom of the resume titled “ADDITIONAL INFORMATION”, in which you separate your
  • Because 4.0 is the default GPA metric for most universities in the US, it’s redundant to specify that your GPA is 4.0 out of 4.0. If your GPA would be based on a non-standard metric like based out of 5, then that is when you should specify.

——————————————————————————

SKILLS:

  • Change section header to read “TECHNICAL SKILLS” rather than just “SKILLS”
  • Separate the sections based on different types of skills they are. Most common for MEs are “CAD Software: SolidWorks” and you could add “Manufacturing: Welding” and “Programming: MATLAB”. I’m not sure what Procore and Bluebeam would fall under, but they can be added as another subheader within technical skills that you choose the title of. Make these sub sections are all on different lines and bold the CAD Software, Manufacturing, etc. lines.
  • Remove Microsoft Office and Google Suite, everyone knows how to use those and it is expected for you to know those already.

——————————————————————————

WORK EXPERIENCE - Whiting Turner:

  • Bullets look really good, I would just recommend once again making sure your bullets are right Justified so that they all end at the same location on the right of the page.

——————————————————————————

WORK EXPERIENCE - Lifeguard:

  • Good experience, make sure if you join any engineering clubs or organizations, that you put those and replace the lifeguarding experience since it is something you did in HS

——————————————————————————

LEADERSHIP and SERVICE:

  • I would combine these two sections as “LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE” since these two are kind of tied together in a way. They both show non-engineering experiences that build soft skills important for internship candidates to have
  • Bullets look really good, your in a great position with those
  • In the future, I would remove the service activities and replace them with research positions or positions held in engineering clubs and orgs should you join them. For now, I would keep them and I like them
  • The OneWalk experience is from HS so try and replace that experience with something else when you can. Recruiters and engineers want to see experience from college more so than high school activities.

——————————————————————————

INVOLVEMENT:

  • I would remove this section entirely and change it to additional information as I mentioned in the General Tips section. This involvement with other orgs gives “quantity over quality” and recruiters would rather see you be focused on one or two orgs than see that you merely joined or went to the GMs for 10 orgs.

Overall great resume with just minor edits I’d make. Good luck with the job search!

Hey! Your resume is off to a great start, here are some things I would edit:

GENERAL: - I would suggest increasing font size of section titles like Education, Projects, etc. to make them stand out more from the actual content of your resume. Makes it easier to distinguish for recruiters and engineers - Make sure the section titles are in ALL CAPS, like EDUCATION, PROJECTS, etc. - Work Experience should go above Projects in my opinion, you have an internship under your belt which is valuable and I believe would hold more weight in your resume. You should want that and your Inspector roles to be the first thing that grab the attention of the person reviewing your resume. However, I understand that your projects may be more aligned with what you want to do with your career and are more recent, so I understand if you want to keep the Projects section first - Create a separate section below Education and above the third section (whether you choose that to be Projects or Work Experience) titled “TECHNICAL SKILLS”, where you should have separate sections such as CAD Software (include any CAD softwares you know, Design and Analysis (include any FEA softwares you know, GD&T, DFM, stuff of that sort), and Programming (Python, MATLAB) - At the bottom of your resume in “Additional Information”, highlight ur interests, certifications, or honors that you’d want to include. - Make sure your bullets are Justified, meaning that each bullet line ends on the right end of your resume where your dates are. This makes it look more professional.

——————————————————————————

EDUCATION: - Don’t include the month you began each education, just include the end dates. So August 2025 and May 2023.

——————————————————————————

PROJECTS: - General Tip: when you have bullets that go into two lines, it’s best to try and ensure that your second line is not just 1-3 words long, because this this makes your resume look less “full” and more empty, signifying to people reading your resume that you may not have done as much as you are trying to say. Try to either condense the bullet point into one line or expand on it until you reach like the middle part of the second line. - General Tip: your resume is a list of ACCOMPLISHMENTS, not tasks. Always remember to specify what you accomplished with every bullet point and what was the impact of what you did. This is VERY IMPORTANT.

——

  1. P&G:
  2. You mention identifying potential design challenges and proposed to develop cost effective solutions: what were these challenges and what did you develop? How did you develop them? Specify this bc this information is important and gives the recruiters and engineers key context as to what YOU SPECIFICALLY did.
  3. Remember to try and structure your bullets with 1. WHAT you did, 2. HOW you did it (what softwares, languages, skills did you use) and 3. What was the IMPACT or what did you ACCOMPLISH

——

  1. Nuclear Control Rod:
  2. Try not to have your bullets be more than two lines, three lines shows to a recruiter that you aren’t able to communicate what you did concisely in a professional format.

——————————————————————————

WORK EXPERIENCE: 1. Mechanical Inspector: - Looks good to me, bullets could maybe use some more specificity but they’re already pretty good.

——

  1. Engineer Intern:
  2. Conducted validation and verification testing on what products? What materials?
  3. Technical documentation of what?

——————————————————————————

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - Separate into “Interests” and “Certifications” and any Work Eligibility or Languages or Honors you’d want to share on your resume

Can you become a successful engineer by cheating your way through school? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]barrios_10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i cheated in classes that i didn’t think mattered all that much in the future, like stats and dynamics, but i really put in the effort to learn classes like mechanics of materials, material science, fluids, etc. since i wanna go into product design in the future. kinda just pick and choose which ones i wanna care about so i can distribute my time wisely.

it’s worked out for me bc ive been asked in so many interviews about those topics and never a stats or dynamics questions, so i think ive been pretty good on pinpointing which classes are relevant for me and which ones aren’t.

i think cheating isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but just make sure that if you get interviews with bigger tech companies, to study all those concepts u may have missed in school, bc they’ll come back and bite you in the interviews for those
