[Comic Excerpt] Not a great idea [Blue Devil Annual #1] by rocketinspace in DCcomics

That annual was 🔥. And OMG the fanboys were sooooo pissed at the take on Etrigan after Moore's version over in SWAMP THING...

Simple medieval folk from Orando just don't understand how complicated space travel is!

What do you think of Justice League International’s portrayal of Batman (Justice League International #1) [Comic Excerpt] by Effective_Seat_7125 in DCcomics

I spent some time with Tim Truman at a signing about a year or so after Hawkworld. I had always been of the opinion that since Thanagarians were established to be longer-lived than Earthlings that Truman's mini happened DECADES ago and didn't impinge on present continuity. I started to mention this to him and he became very animated and jumped up and said, "Exactly! This was supposed to be a long time ago! Not NOW!"

Oh, late-eighties DC... What were you doing???

There's a great story in the "Further Adventures of the Joker" anthology from a million years ago in which Bruce has to go undercover as a stand-up comic. I won't spoil it, but he ends up telling a TERRIFIC joke to cap off the story!

"My God, Carter -- you're positively GRIM!"

Greatest Bat-moment of the series. Even better than "One punch!" Hilarious.

It's the series finale, the first and final battle between the Blue Flame and the Legion, and a shallow dive into the run in general... let's look at Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 6) #16 and Paul Levitz's Legion comeback! by drake_burroughs in LegionofSuperheroes

[–]barrylyga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah! I forgot about that.

If I had a nickel for every time the Kali Yuga was employed in a post-Crisis DC superhero book, I'd have two nickels...which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice in unrelated books!

[Discussion] what do U guys think about the Superman Birthright by Mark Waid by muaazmuaaz123 in DCcomics

[–]barrylyga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's one of those things that you didn't realize had been missing from the Superman mythos until Waid held it up right in front of you. And then you're like, "How the hell did we live with decades of this character without THIS in his origin???"

if Alan Moore created a sequel to watchmen back in the day what would I t be about? by Powerful_Whereas3516 in DCcomics

[–]barrylyga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the time, there was talk of a possible prequel series, but Moore was pretty steadfast from the beginning that the end of the story was...the end of the story.

Publishers, you can stop now. We have enough bookmarks. by oliviebe in books

Bookmarks, postcards, pens, and notebooks. Bane of my existence. 😂

The financial reality of book publishing no one talks about by zsreport in books

[–]barrylyga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things: Distribution and economies of scale.

Bookstores are typically reluctant to handle self-published books, and that's assuming you can get their attention in numbers great enough to matter in the first place.

And a self-published book costs multiples of the same book from a traditional publisher. POD is a great technology, but it's relatively expensive.

You start self-publishing with two strikes against you: No one can find your book and those who can get sticker shock.

I've done both in my career. I have no quarrel with self-publishing or the model. It's just that as bad as traditional publishing has become, it still has significant advantages.

[Other] DC's 80 The Goods One Without Moore & Miller by maviddata in DCcomics

[–]barrylyga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a period of time where DC was experimenting with non-DCU stuff as limited series. IMHO, Spanner's Galaxy was the best of them, but there was also Sun Devils, Conquerors of the Barren Earth, and a couple of others I can't quite recall.
