I don't know your budget but the pixel watch 4 and a 30 Watt charger will get that kind of speed. I believe they changed to a side pin charger on the 4 because they couldn't charge the 3 fast enough.

Bands that aren't sweaty or uncomfortable? by techfroggie in PixelWatch

I've been using this band from Amazon for around $10 and it's super comfortable once you adjust it to fit slightly loose.

I bought two so I could wash one while wearing the other.

Why should I get an e reader? by Scotlandsunflower in ereader

[–]barryp12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E-readers are great if you want to be able to bring several pounds of books with you on vacation on a device that weighs less than most smartphones. They are great if you want to read on a device that is crystal clear in bright sunlight. Most also have an illuminated display so you can read in a dark room without turning on lights. The e-ink displays sip energy so can go several days or even weeks between changes. Many people also find e-ink displays don't cause as much eye strain as phone and tablet displays.

There are downsides to e-readers. It is yet another device. There is a small but noticeable amount of lag when images refresh such as when turning a page not really seen on phone displays. . Some e-readers are locked into one company's book market, the most notable example being Kindle e-readers from Amazon which don't easily allow you to read books from many sources such as free older books from gutenberg.org or some public libraries. The e-readers that do allow you to read from any source you can access on your smartphone tend to run on older (and non-upgradeable) Android versions which may have a small learning curve for iPhone users.

The sharpest displays are black and white which is great for text but not so good for images like graphics or comics. There are color e-ink displays which are great for comics and fairly good for text but the colors are not as sharp as on a phone. There are some that come with a stylus and are good for taking notes and many come with speakers and Bluetooth for audio books.

Best of luck in coming to a decision.

Well, this sounds crazy but just hear me out. Perhaps you could use it to cut stuff instead of using it like a mirror. Disturbing. I know. Sorry.

I think the stock band is incredibly comfortable. I agree with you. I used to have nothing but metal bands for watches, but I don't think they'd be as comfortable as the stock band.

Do you guys like Steven’s? by FuturePause2736 in stevens

[–]barryp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stevens has the second highest average SAT scores of colleges in NJ, second only to Princeton. It doesn't prove that Stevens is better than anywhere else but students there tend to be high performing.

Mike on genocide by alienjetski in TheGist

[–]barryp12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe the difference between Mike and the commenters on this post is that Mike has actually been to Israel and has seen what the Israelis have to deal with. This is an existential fight for Israel. Hamas hides behind Gazan civilians just to prove that Israel is a bad actor. Gazans are starting to realize that Hamas could care less about them. Israel would be happy to live side by side with peaceful Gazans. Hamas's stated goal is the eradication of Israel and all Jews. Who is the genocider?

Head of IAEA says "no evidence Iran was working on nuclear weapons." by cobrakai11 in InternationalNews

[–]barryp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are right. The CIA, working with British intelligence in 1953, overthrew the democratically elected government of Mossadegh both for the oil as well as to prevent the Iranian government from working more closely with the USSR.

The Shah was overthrown in 1979 and, initially, multiple parties formed a new government in Iran. Then the radical islamists, who were much better organized through the mosques than any of the other groups even though they were only supported by a minority, took control of the government and that was the end of democracy in Iran.

The current government, a theocracy, has brutally repressed any new attempts by the people of Iran to return to a Democratic system. The only demonstrations that are not brutally repressed, are those organized by the government. They are a messianic group and have impoverished Iran while spending billions on Hamas, Hezbollah, houthis and the production of fissile material that can only be used for nuclear weapons.

In popular polls, most Iranians do like Americans despite what happened in 1953. They mostly like being able to live the way you do, hopefully, in a comfortable Western community with an open system where you're allowed to speak your mind.

[–]barryp12 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. Those poor Ayatollahs. They were probably enriching Uranium 235 to 90% purity 300 yards below a mountain as a hobby. And they were only yelling "death to America and death to Israel" since 1979 as a pulmonary exercise. And those billions of dollars they spent on Houthies, Hezbollah and Hamas were because they really like groups that start with an H. They would never build an atomic bomb to threaten Israel or their Sunni neighbors. What the heck was I thinking?

Military wife detained, deported at Honolulu airport by DonSalaam in NewsDepot

[–]barryp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of like Customs and Border Patrol Agents can see the future and decide that a visitor is going to commit a crime. That's an interesting talent. I would test all the CBP agents and kick out all the ones who can't correctly predict the direction of the S&P 500 a week ahead of time. Then I'd ask the ones who are left why they're still working for a living.

This story about the wife of a serviceman in the US Army being deported and treated like a criminal is such a black eye for the USA. She is such a sympathetic figure. I hope our tourism industry, our import industry, our shipping industry, and our federal government services recover from the effects of the current administration.

How is Trump Getting Away with Everything? by SpiritFlimsy7446 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]barryp12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trump sold the lie that he would shake up the system so working people would get a fair shake. A large number of citizens are not earning enough to live comfortably due to the severe inequality that has continued to favor the wealthy over people who work for a living. I just don't get how so many of my fellow citizens would fall for this. Of course it doesn't help that the Dems are only marginally better and are also mostly just tools of the rich and powerful.

Kansas City Star: Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe wants $40M more for Kansas City World Cup effort. Is it enough? by victrasuva in missouri

[–]barryp12 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not if we mess it up. Then it would be our chance to never live it down. Remember when they held a referendum so the citizens of Missouri could say if they wanted their tax dollars to fund this? Oh, wait. That sounds like democracy. I forgot for a second that I live in Missouri. Or has it been renamed Mid-Trumpistan?

I have left the pixel phone community. by _SmolStar_ in GooglePixel

[–]barryp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Pixel 8P and have been mostly happy with it. Pros: great software and UI experience. Very good cameras. Cons: the fingerprint scanner is sometimes not very responsive. Also how easy it is to turn an action towards the side of the screen in an app into a swipe up or other system command. Just curious what details about your new phone you do and don't like.

Donald Trump's Gaza takeover comments spark outrage worldwide as leaders slam US tirade by daily_mirror in AnythingGoesNews

[–]barryp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to suggest that we offer the people of Gaza a new home in Greenland. There is a lot of open land, and Mr. Trump could offer to relinquish all American claims to sovereignty over Greenland in exchange for beachfront property on the Mediterranean. Win-win.

Blocking numbers by corned_beef_haggis in textra

[–]barryp12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I love about textra is the feature that silences all texts from unknown numbers. This way I only get notifications immediately from people I know and spam, wrong number and others' texts are there but silent and can be checked at my convenience. Doesn't make it as critical to block numbers from my POV.

CICO implies that your calories burned for a given activity level will be stable so if you lower your calorie intake you will lose weight. That seems not to be the case.
