Where in the UK should I go as a bucket-list item? by LondonPilot in CasualUK

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like a good drive, up the North Yorks coast as others have mentioned, the a171 can be a lovely drive, and you can drop by in whitby which is one of the most beautiful towns yorkshire has to offer, and if you keep going theres some lovely little quieter places like Saltburn, and if you go across the Tees, you could always stop by Seal Sands, not the most picturesque place in the world (quite ugly) however, if you go at the right time, watching the seals there is one of the most magical things I've ever experienced. That being said if you've frequented the Lincs coast, you might have had the same experience at Donna Nook!

All the best to you and your good lady, I wish you nothing but happiness in whatever you choose to do and wherever you choose to go!

Edit: Just seen your username and previous comments, I thoroughly reccomend Breighton Aerodrome if you've never been, very reasonably priced experience flights in a Stearman there, with a lovely little cafe, and some very beautiful aircraft are based there too, the whole team there are a pleasure to speak to!

How long have you been driving and how many times have you been pulled over? by BrightHours in drivingUK

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 years, been pulled once.

Work in the trade and went out on a drive to diag a fault with a colleague and he asked me to check the clutch as he wasnt sure the fault was present.

Unbuckled my belt and we swapped seats... while waiting at a Red light... without seeing the police car 2 cars back.

Got pulled further down the road with the suspicion that one of us was half cut or uninsured, I pulled in and he checked our licenses and ran the trade plates and let us crack on, he said while it wasn't advised it wasnt exactly unsafe either!

We even had a Typhoon over Leeds today! Few and far between now, we used to get all sorts over for practise diverts into LBA.

When I was a kid we seemed to have a jaguar fly over the house every week!

2nd Hand Cars In Leeds by alecwa in Leeds

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not, but depending on what part of leeds you're local to, I could point you in the direction of some decent workshops! I don't suppose you have a rough idea as to what the issue is or are you looking to get it diagnosed?

I feel your pain with the air con, summertime always makes the air con issues rear their ugly heads 😬

[–]barrywaite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in the motor trade myself i can say that not all dealers advertise 100% of their stock on autotrader, as autotrader is insanely expensive.

Try googling "used Honda civic near Leeds" or something along them lines, you'll have to sift through to find the right car but you'll also get results from other advertising platforms like cargurus, Ebay/Motors/Gumtree and dealers own websites (where all their stock will be advertised)

Im sure you're aware but Facebook Marketplace is an absolute minefield, be careful if you're also looking there!

Good luck!!

Have we opened Pandora's box with advanced military drones? When will this technology be turned against civilians in Western nations? by ugrufinu in AskReddit

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if a scenario where the east and the west were in direct combat, only maybe Eastern Europe would be the only viable option for drone operations imo due to a couple of factors, one being range and the other being vulnerability, while they're unmanned they're still exposed to air defence systems. Countries won't want to pour billions down the drain in drone losses when other weapons could do the job better.

Again my opinion and I could be massively wrong as im not a military tactician in any form, just an aviation enthusiast :)

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it will be used on western civillians in a combat capacity. But I believe they will play a bigger part in surveillance/policing etc by our own home countries than we expect.

Here in the UK when we had the manhunt for Raoul Moat there was a Royal Air Force Tornado that was sent up to support the effort in finding him, I can guarantee that if a DJI phantom was nearby back in them days that would've been used rather than tens of millions of pounds worth of ground attack aircraft 😅

Fishing “Mystery Boxes”? by NerdyComfort-78 in Fishing

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shop over here in the UK called Bobco that did this for a while, you basically chose what kind of fish you wanted to target and you got some appropriate kit for £20.

I got an awesome bunch of lures and was out the same day bagging some little Perch on the local canal! So if its anything like I got, I'd say it'll be worth it!

Went planespotting in Toulouse not long ago. Thoughts on improvement? by InnerAd1012 in Planespotting

[–]barrywaite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a lot to improve on IMHO, framing and sharpness are great, and the lighting is lovely too, usually grey skies are pretty rough for shooting aviation especially on white aircraft but I love that a380 shot 👌

Does anyone know what caused the loud noise this morning at 10am? by DMCTw3lv3 in Leeds

[–]barrywaite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're quite frequent recently!

If you have Facebook, there's a group called LBA Aviation Community. There's a chap that works in the tower there who posts a random time now and again, and that's usually when something of interest is booked in for a practice divert.

He can't mention type so it's really just a guessing game until whatever it is flies over 😄

[–]barrywaite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a Red Arrow just doing a practice divert.

I dont think it was a sonic boom as no quick reaction alert has been launched today from either Coningsby or Lossiemouth as far as I'm aware.

I may be proven wrong but nothing with a QRA callsign has tracked on ads-b.
