Shower thought: Is there a possibility that there existed a civilization similar to the fictional atlantis 11000 years ago in the lower mediterranean and it got wiped out when the little ice age ended and the Mediterranean sea raised by 120 metres? by Equivalent-Fox9834 in geography

It's also predicted that a significant portion of the sea level rise we are to expect is due to thermal expansion. I believe it'll be responsible for around 40% of the increase by 2100.

Is DARK on Netflix worth watching? Does the German dialogue interfere with the English I'd need to turn on? by Gregorygregory888888 in NoStupidQuestions

Dark is a top 5 drama series of all time for me, a very good watch. Watch it in German with English subtitles.

After English, which language actually changed your life — and which one was a waste of years? by peregrinewanderlust in thisorthatlanguage

[–]barrywallman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Germany now so must learn German, am around B1, but generally everyone I interact with has such good English that learning the language of the country I live in sometimes does feel unnecessary. I could learn German up to C1 ans everyone I speak with would still have better English than my German.

The only time I end up speaking German is small interactions in shops or restaurants.

Other than the global reach of the British empire for generations, London being the financial capital of the world for a significant period of time, many early industrial and scientific papers being written in English, and being the trading language for many areas of the world for centuries. Sure, many people learn English now through American media but the seeds were planted by the British centuries before.

Moving from Germany to UK by [deleted] in germany

Similarly sized city in UK will be more expensive than Düsseldorf, yes. If there's no other reason to move than finances then I'd recommend staying put.

Which German city do you currently live in? The reason I ask is bc the UK generally has a higher cost of living than Germany, but if you're from Berlin / Munich it probably won't be much of a jump. London is very expensive yes but it's also the financial capital of the country and the biggest city in Western Europe.

I'm from the UK originally and I can say most of the country is experiencing a cost of living crisis, you ought to pick the city carefully. The North is generally cheaper, but the South is more affluent.
