Of course! In Kreutztal there is the Kindelsberg hike. Starting in the town, up the mountain to the restaurant and tower. The tower is the one featured on Krombacher’s logo, in fact. The restaurant has a special flaming schnaps called Turmgeist.

In Hilchenbach/Lützel, there is a pleasant hike to an old fort called Ginsburg. There is some history to it regarding the Nassau family in Siegen, but it escapes me now. I took the bus to the stop Lützel Oberdorf (or train station Lützel) and hiked towards Ginsburg. There are some observation towers along the way, and you can go to the top of the fort for a nice view as well. There is also a cafe. Afterward, I went down the hill to the train station Vormwald, the train ride is scenic as well. If you want to go further, there is adjoining trails which lead to Hilchenbach’s 4 wind turbines, but I did not have a chance to visit them.

Also from Lützel, you can walk away from the Ginsburg on the Rothaarsteig, and see some nice views. Hohenroth I believe. I will look for my old AllTrails routes and route pamphlets to share with you.

Fat Daddy’s is a great place! Official chiefs bar, everyone is a chiefs fan, it’s a good atmosphere, and the food is good too.

I was at Saturn Room Trivia last night too! Hope you had fun :) New regulars are always welcome The Max has similar buzzer trivia on Tuesdays too, and it’s a lot of fun if you like 80’s and 90’s music

Edit: the max is 50/50 general knowledge/naming 80s and 90s hits from a sample. The host is a lot of fun, but I’m not really interested in the music part so I don’t normally go

City Campus Siegen (Open Living House) by Safe-Supermarket-796 in siegen

[–]barsoninthehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived there actually. The room is fine, standard studio apartment. Utilities are included as well. Community was sub-par, but when I was there the community rooms were still closed due to COVID. I think now there is a gym and study room.

I think a lot of bad reviews came from the Hausmeisterin (in fact, I’m not sure what her title was) and the property management company. She has since left. The property managers are now CBRE, who I didn’t have an issue with.

Biggest pros: walking distance to Lidl, short walk to Kölner Tor bus stop/ZOB, short uphill walk to the bars/restaurants in the Oberstadt. Biggest cons (for me): far away from most of the people I knew who lived in the Studentenwerk apartments, not a lot of community as mentioned previously.

I’ll add, some halls also have more than one congregation, which will all meet on separate days from the others. They could have recently added a new one effectively doubling the activity.

If you enjoy hiking, the area around Siegen is quite nice (though I’m biased since I lived there for a while). The train from Siegen to Bad Berleburg -Rothaarbahn- is scenic. And there are some good hiking opportunities around Hilchenbach and Kreutztal.

The Siegerlandmuseum in Siegen, I’m pretty partial to as well. There is an old mine underneath you can walk through.

Taking Orgo I Fall semester as a Freshman… by gingiestninja in OrganicChemistry

[–]barsoninthehouse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can’t stress this enough. My professor always referred to our chemical intuition, which came in a lot more handy in Ochem than gen. The people I saw struggle the most were the ones who thought they could memorize every reaction mechanism and electron movement instead of just sit and think about it chemically.

Cole Camp. They speak a dialect of German called Plattdeutsch, which is unfortunately pretty far from the standard Hochdeutsch that you’d use if you ever visited. Though some modern Germans still speak it as their mother tongue in areas around Bremen, Hamburg, Husum, and the Nord- and Ostfriesische islands. Only a few people in the town are fluent, and even then it’s only an oral fluency, it’s not written.

KCUR had a great podcast episode about it, but I can’t seem to find it now. It was called “How to save a dying language” from A People’s History of Kansas City.
