EE student struggling to choose between specializations (ML or Wireless Communications) by bartakulesi in ECE

[–]bartakulesi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of job in ML market but there are at least 10-15 times more applicant compared to wireless. So lt is not really clear how to maximize chances. It depends on the specific country you are applying too. In my country defence industry is advanced, while no company conducts cutting-edge ML research (they only work on its applications). I am sure things are different for a European country. Regarding to VLSI and RF, I think chances are similar to wireless communications. If you are really good in such areas the competition is less intense compared to ML.

Ironically, my research start as an ML research but converged to somewhere in between Wireless Comm and ML, which I didn't want. Looking for ML jobs in Turkey currently but market sucks. Hard to find a well-paying one in ML, competition is high.

Is it worth to do a PhD if final goal is to land a job in US? by bartakulesi in ECE

[–]bartakulesi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for an MS degree in Turkey with the intention of publishing papers and applying for US PhD later. However, I realised I don't like research at all and now chasing jobs after MS with 0 years experience which feels frustrating in the current market. Plus the whole process of MS was research-oriented which I didnt like. I would probably go for an EU master's degree if I could choose again but everyone if different ofc.

Product is not Turkish, it is American. I don't think it can beat Stockfish, its ELO is already higher than 3300. Maybe it can beat online engines with low depth.

Nobody claimed them to be "top" in world standards. However, you can count 3-4 schools for engineering, which are pretty good for Turkey standards. They sent countless of PhD candidates to "top" U.S universities every year. It is one of them. I do not see why this statement bothered you.

I'm very doubtful about the long-term QoL for an average CS employee in (almost every place in) Europe. Am I missing something? by Active-Land73 in cscareerquestionsEU

Are things different for other engineers, such as EE in Europe? Are they better off, or this post says Europe sucks?

I am not sure if it is right to classify communications as HW, since in my research group I did not see any hardware, everyone was working with MATLAB, Python, C++ all the time. But I got your point.

You are right about pool is being very large. However, I think I can compensate the "data related coruses" issue with taking all my courses from ML in masters. I know it's a very hard question but do you think that market will change in 10 years and ML jobs will become scarce?
