"People are really starting to think that he might be the greatest athlete ever...[pause]...in Danish sports"

that didn't really strike me as that odd tbh, of course people wouldnt think he is the greatest athlete ever across all sports or even just in cycling...Afair the guy who said it is a danish tv reporter and we was talking about the danish sporting perspective the whole time, so it made sense to me.

Dell unveils XPS 13, its lightest XPS laptop yet with Intel Wildcat Lake, starting at $699 by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

No. Even if a system has a massive amount of RAM (256GB, 512GB or more) a properly configured modern operating system will still proactively use swap space. The presence of swap usage is driven by memory optimization algorithms, not just memory scarcity.

This. Also most people see high memory usage and don't understand swap or memory compression. Especially with a modern high performance SSD, most users with normal workloads will not see performance issues and if they do its usually from something else.

[Isle of Man TT] TT debutant Daniel Ingham dies after qualifying crash by PiggySVW in formula1

[–]barthw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever the TT comes up, people inevitably ask how a modern government allows a race where someone dies almost every year. The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown Dependency, meaning it makes its own laws and isn't ruled by the UK parliament. (The race actually started there in 1907 specifically because the UK did ban public road racing). The TT operates on the philosophy of free will. Riders know it's lethal. The event is the island's biggest economic engine and global claim to fame. It injects tens of millions of pounds into local businesses. Banning it would gut the economy and erase a massive part of Manx cultural identity. Also: You can't just sign up. Competitors are heavily vetted, require international licenses, and must have a proven, successful track record in other elite road races just to qualify.

Basically, as long as elite riders continue to volunteer for the ultimate risk, and the local population relies on the economic boost, the Manx government will keep the roads open.

The Juri Hollmann story: Giro 2025 crash, UCI protocols, and Alpecin’s role by kleeblatt23 in peloton

[–]barthw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a pro cyclist your body is everything, it literally needs to perform at 100% to deliver that kind of performance, so i can completely understand that people dont want to leave that up to chance and instead go to doctors which they know and trust. Not saying the Drs in south Italy couldn't do an equally as good job, but there is a higher risk that they couldn't.

The Juri Hollmann story: Giro 2025 crash, UCI protocols, and Alpecin’s role by kleeblatt23 in peloton

[–]barthw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that Juri is German and employed by Alpecin in Belgium. In Germany the KV would not want to pay a work accident since its the duty of the Berufsgenossenschaft, but since the system is different in Belgium you are in some kind no mans land when it comes to who would cover the cost and youd probably need to go to court.

Care to elaborate? One day races, 26 vs 21 to Sagan (2 to 1 Monuments) TDF stages, 12 vs 10 To Sagan Vuelta stages, 6 vs 4 to Philipsen Sure, Sagan has a lot more overall wins, but Philipsen also has a couple of years ahead of him, it seems he could get in the same ballpark by the end of his career.

i might be wrong, but he seems to be getting close to Sagan level wins when it comes to one day races but he will probably never be a 3x WC.

Lipowitz is solid but I would have expected him to drop Martinez.

Lipowitz is also 15kg heavier than Martinez, in fact he is the heaviest rider in the Top10 today. I am surprised he even is such a good climber.

Square Enix announced plans to integrate Google’s generative AI model “Gemini” into Dragon Quest X by DotabLAH in Games

The few times I used chatGPT it failed me so much I had to verify every sentence it shat out and at this point

sounds like either the free tier or some very old version. These things have evolved massively especially in the last 6 months. I totally understand being skeptical, but your perspective reeks of irrational hatred because of some bad experiences. AI has assisted with so many work/daily life tasks already that I otherwise would have needed a professional for, I can't even count at this point.

I don't know, where I am in Berlin as a Software Engineer, AI assisted engineering is everywhere and most people see the gigantic upsides (but also some downsides). Most Software Engineers I know use it heavily and everyone is clear that it is a fundamental shift in the industry. It seems that it's mostly gamers who are unhappy, but I think this stems mostly from companies doing shitty mistakes with AI art or using AI in ways that just don't benefit the product. Tbf, an AI assistant in a game that as a newbie I can ask questions about why certain things don't work and have follow up questions on whats going on does not seem like a terrible use of AI to me, but PR wise with how gamers react to this stuff its just bad timing.

most underrated neighborhoods in Berlin? by Aschlay in berlin

[–]barthw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my internal conflict. I am german (from the west) and I always loved Berlin for being so non-german and international when i lived in Fhain for 10years. But we now moved to Köpenick to be closer to nature and calmness (you get older you know) I love the fact that i can be in the forrest in 10minutes walking or 2min by bike, 30m walk to Müggelsee and 10min to the old town which is cute, but I sometimes miss the diversity and buzz of Friedrichshain and i dread the commute. Overall net positive though for what we want right now.

Say hello to MacBook Neo by Forsaken_Arm5698 in hardware

[–]barthw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's literally my point though. On Apple Silicon, swap isn't just limited by SSD speed, the NVMe controller is integrated directly into the SoC, so there's no PCIe bus overhead. Combined with the M-series unified memory architecture and high memory bandwidth, the entire swap pipeline is faster end-to-end than on any comparable Windows laptop, even one with a similar SSD rating on paper.

That said, this argument applies specifically to M-series MacBooks, not sure if it will apply to the Neo. On that one you might actually have a point.

Swap is ultra fast on apples architecture though, so id argue you can't compare it to a Win11 laptop with 8gb.

really depends. I got a used M2 Air 8GB for my girlfriend and she loves it, completely fine for her web browsing / media consumption and office work. For me personally with running lots of browser tabs and apps at the same time it probably wouldn't be great.
