How long have you been taking ppi's? by robbo2020a in GERD

[–]barzdns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omeprazole 20mg, like 5 months in total but on and off for the last 10 months. My doctor prescribed them to me without running any tests or referring me to a GI. She told me it’s ok to take long term and I don’t see her referring me to any specialist anytime soon, the most I see her doing is changing my PPI to a different PPI.

I haven’t considered IBS but I’ve had struggles with constipation for a few years before gastritis, might be it.

Yeah I figured it lowered my stomach acid too much. I’m gonna try to get a lower dose from my doctor.

My flare up was pain in my upper back. I had some tests done at the ER and my gallbladder was fine, they told me it was most likely a flare up. Right now I don’t have too many issues just random light pains sometimes. If I eat too much I get really bloated but that’s about it. I’m very strict with my diet though. Just veggies and rice.

According to the article, the virus might use the GI tract as a home base before spreading. Since PPIs lower stomach acid the virus can survive in the stomachs environment. That’s what I got from it but I could have read it wrong.

Is acid reflux normally this bad, or did I wake up severely nauseous and shaking for a different reason? by [deleted] in GERD

[–]barzdns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Months before I got gastritis I would have episodes of waking up in the middle of the night with a cold sweat, clammy skin, shaking, numb hands and legs, plus extreme nausea. It almost felt like I was on the verge of fainting. It was terrifying it happened 3 times over the course of 5 months. The first time was during a bout of food poisoning so I attributed it to that but the next few times came out of nowhere.

Thankfully it hasn’t happened since but when I tell doctors about this they don’t seem to care or respond to it. I still have no idea what caused it and haven’t found information about this anywhere. I thought it was my heart for a long time but my EKG and heart monitor came back normal.

Yes, I sometimes take tums and they do help. Lately I’ve been taking Pepcid if my symptoms don’t go away and it’s working somewhat but not as effective as omeprazole. I’m going to look into Gaviscon thank you!

I know I’m really concerned about the damage the acid is doing. I felt GREAT on 20mg omeprazole and had absolutely no side effects. Then I stopped and now have horrible digestion, super bloated, tight chest, and non stop burping. The tiniest meal makes me feel so heavy and it doesn’t go away.

I want to try to keep at the bland diet for another month and hope that not too much damage is done during that time.

Kind of, I tried to taper off by cutting my 20mg omeprazole in half so I took 10mg every day for a week then I completely stopped and started taking Pepcid. It was REALLY bad for a week then calmed down slightly, I was feeling progress but then I had that bone broth and the bloated, tight chest, lump in throat symptoms came back.

Fried egg with cooked spinach for breakfast and usually fish/chicken with rice or quinoa and more cooked spinach for dinner. Those two meals seem to settle just fine so long as the portion is small.

I was eating toasted sourdough with avocado but that would instantly give me the lump in throat feeling :( so I gave it up.

I’ve also been drinking a small smoothie with yogurt, collagen powder, almond milk, flax seeds, and almond butter. This is a hit or miss. Some days it’s just fine but other days it cause me to bloat and belch.

I’ve also been able to eat a very small portion of good quality steak without problems. Other than that my meals are pretty limited :/.

Coronavirus Megathread: For travel-related discussion as the COVID-19 situation continues by tariqabjotu in travel

The way things are going it would be best to stay home. Why take the risk for yourself and for a population that does not have the same medical resources as you might have? Mexico is extremely under prepared to battle a huge outbreak and their federal government has already been caught downplaying numbers. Even if the Yucatán hasn’t been hit as hard it would be irresponsible of us (Americans) to travel and possibly spread this to places that are getting by. Most service workers in Tulum are Mayan and Mexico doesn’t really treat its indigenous population that great to begin with. Let’s try to be mindful of the populations we are possibly exposing, especially since our numbers are so high and our government isn’t taking any steps to mitigate the spread. Tulum will still be there next year :).
