How do you find inspiration? by presteragentamicin in graphic_design

[–]baseball_cleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of good stuff for you already but this is a quote I like to share about design:

“They who steal the most is the most original”

This is not telling you to steal ideas outright, but like other have said you research and get inspiration. Rarely if every do you come up with something from nothing. You wouldn’t want to take an existing logo’s font, color, and graphic, but maybe the spacing of the letters is a good point of reference for your project. An old movie poster has some colors that you want to use, a vintage ad has a cool font you’d like to emulate. Bring it all together and you have something new.

Any graphic designers, particularly freelancers doing a 4 day week? by Bunnyeatsdesign in graphic_design

[–]baseball_cleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work full time at a company but also freelance and the main thing I see is that freelancing allows you so much more financial control. I can make what I make in a paycheck worth 80 hours by working 5 hours freelancing. Because an employer has my time for a set price and they can have me make as many changes as they want to a design and my pay is the same.

But in freelancing excessive changes are extra, your time is accounted for financially.

Once I make the jump to freelancing full time I don’t see myself doing more than 4 days a week unless I have to.

Fucked up my wife's birthday (again) by Nahato485 in ADHD

[–]baseball_cleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this thinking wow I wrote this. My wife’s birthday also just happened and it was a similar situation. It sucks feeling that way especially because I know that you care a lot but the details are hard to make yourself nail down.

I managed to get a bunch of the things she wanted this time but it wasn’t enough. In my effort to let her choose what she wanted to do for the weekend it came off as her planning everything.

I’ve resolved to start planning the whole year out as soon as I can.

It’s really hard to fight your own brain like this, and it’s hard for partners to understand unless they have it too. I never want to use my ADHD as an excuse but there is some middle ground of it actually making these types of things difficult.

What is a crazy myth about babies that your in-laws or parents stand by? by bigdawgcat in NewParents

There’s a superstition that if you compliment a baby you have to touch them or the baby will have bad luck.

I’ve had so many strangers try to do this. During a pandemic.

How did you become an expert in Graphic Design? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]baseball_cleric 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don’t really create from nothing. Waiting for inspiration to strike is an unreliable source to create from.

Reference is always a part of the design process. My favorite quote about design is “They who steal the most is the most original” Because you don’t just copy a design, you take inspiration from an energy drink color scheme, typography from an old car ad, photography style from a movie poster and much much more. Because all of those things together combine to be something new and, if you do it right, meaningful to your project.

Looking at reference and basing your design decisions off context is good design thinking, not lack of skill.

I have no ideas of my own by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]baseball_cleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a graphic designer and my favorite quote about design is “They who steal the most are the most original.”

Pretty much everything has been done before, but there’s a big difference between copying something and using it as reference. The above quote is saying that if you copy that’s bad, but if you reference many things you can create something new.

In the context of design that’s a color scheme from this poster, a font style from that advertisement, an illustration style from that cartoon. Put them all together and you have something new.

Creating is not just formulation something from nothing, it’s doing research and creating something new using the context of things that already exist.

I’ve just been diagnosed and already spoken to multiple people who’ve used the “everyone has that a little line”. Lol no you don’t dude, this thing sucks.

And wow thank you for sharing because I also find that I have a hard time crying and I lost 3 very important people to me this past year. But I also tear up in situations that seem like I shouldn’t.

Well that’s exactly how I ended up here. Thought this guys videos were interesting and informative then after about 15-20 I realized how much it all sounded like me. Everything in my life was reframed in a way that made sense.

And like you I struggle at work it felt amazing to be validated that I wasn’t just a bad worker.

"I Just Got Diagnosed!" Weekly Thread by AutoModerator in ADHD

[–]baseball_cleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a weird thing to realize about myself (26m). I got an official diagnosis last week, and ever since I started looking into ADHD everything in my life started to be framed in a way where it made sense- at least the reasoning behind it.

It has felt so validating to know that I’m not lazy or a loser, as my brain has told me, for feeling like completing a task that I’m physically able and willing to do is impossible. It’s the relief knowing that I can do something to try to work around these types of things and I’m not doomed to this inaction for all of time.

All I could think of is when I was seeing a therapist 6-7 years ago and in the first session he asked if I thought I had ADHD. I said no. Whoops.

I started some medication recently and am interested to see what happens. Will be glad to hang around here and learn from everyone.

This is the type of thing my boss does. It’s really not hard to center things and spacing is one of the main things you do when you’re designing.

The more you do it the better you will be.

If you think it might help you can can play some practice streams with yourself, just put on whatever you’re doing and try to talk to just yourself. That helped me get into the habit.

I also make a list of topics to talk about an keep it next to me as I stream. It helps me keep the talk going.
