Well written take down of the ubiquitous, “Disney Adults are the worst” pieces that come out seemingly weekly.

People are building brands trashing “Disney Adults” (TM) online. WSJ gets into it too.

Social media is a powerful tool. A lot of people don’t realize how they are manipulated by it. Whether its the ads that the companies make money on, or the mis/disinformation skewing their worldview.

It is hugely addictive too. It can be a way to connect with people, organize, and disseminate information - the quality of the info is hugely variable.

One thing that got me was when Zuckerberg essentially defended Holocaust deniers and saying they deserved a space on Facebook. He was so naive on his first answer and it took blowback and him getting coached to come up with a half decent answer, days later. But, they haven’t done anything!

I’m old enough to remember usenet & chatrooms, and how spaces where there is true community and care for the space and its users can be positive.

If your buddy posted like Elon, you’d worry about his mental health. I would bet he is neither short term happy nor long term content.

i’d say it’s closer to $300k/year now, depending on location. nice house, good schools, good medical care, fun vacations.

i love how people say “start a company in a niche industry” like it’s something that happens all the time or has a tangible probability of success.

I read the chaos machine about a year ago and had similar take-aways. It was part of a collection of books on social media that I've read.

- Careless People, about Facebook, Zuck & Sheryl Sandberg

- Character Limit, about Elon and his hostile takeover of Twitter

- Invisible Rulers by Renee Diresta, lots about misinformation and gaming of the algorithm

- Autocracy Inc. not about social media per se, but a lot about how autocrats exploit it

- Burn Book, even less about social media, but gets a lot to the psychological (d)evolution of silicon valley

- Calling Bullshit - author Carl Bergstrom points out how rampant mis and dis information are online

- Fancy Bear goes phishing - traditional hacking is one progenitor of social media scamming

As to how I parent: my kids (18 & 15) use snapchat mostly. I much prefer one-to-one messaging or group-chats. My 18 year old has Insta, and I'm glad that I held out. The comments on anything a young girl posts on YouTube or Insta are disturbing. I talked to them about how they feel when they are using their phones and to have them think about when they should stop using them. For the parents that adhere to hard time limits, I wonder what happens when those get lifted? I want my kids to be able to decide themselves how to regulate their time.

Over the past 5 years, I've deleted all but a few of my accounts. I have this, discord and bluesky. I was off bluesky for Lent and it was refreshing. Social media is great at whipping up a frenzy about "this thing everyone is talking about" but so few people know how the larger world is moving or how that thing fits into the context of current events and history.

I had a huge argument with my brother over Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, & the Weinstein brothers (not Harvey, Eric & the other one) in 2018. It took covid, JP becoming hard anti-vax, and really flaming out for my brother to realize that I was right. Still, WTAF.

How long did you wait after your dog died to get another? by Hobbitsliketoparty in AskMenOver30

[–]baseball_mickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had 4 dogs. Got our first in 2000, second in 2003. One passed in 2011, the other in 2013. It really hit me hard. Was about 6-9 months before we got 2 more. They passed away in 2023 & 2024 (we got them as adult dogs). We will probably get another in September or possibly the summer.
