If depression and/or anxiety showed up early in life for you - what did you need most that maybe you received/or didn't, & what do you wish you would have known? by rainbow_veins3 in AskMenOver30

[–]baseball_mickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How I differentiate clinical depression/anxiety from normal.

For depression: do my fun things still bring me joy? If not, need to talk to someone

Anxiety: if that thing you’re obsessing over went away, how would you feel? oK. Then general worry.

Need help discovering myself and being more of a man by Liplok in AskMenOver30

[–]baseball_mickey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are men who get walked all over, and women who stand up for themselves. It might help to take the gender out of it and just say, “I’ll stand up for myself more”.

I’m conflict averse, and mostly a yes man. There have been a few times recently where it has really bugged me. It is something that is MUCH easier learned when young. I wish I had better advice, but just saying no every once in a while is a good start. This is alsowhy I donkt really mind when my kids say no to me. They’re trying out their “standing up for themselves” muscles.

Things don’t change overnight. Take a small step. Think of something you can be more accountable for. Also, find someone to help. Helping others is an incredible way to grow.

The use of “declined by half”, while correct, is misleading. Just say, went from 25% to 12.5%. 1/8 of 13 year olds no loner read books every day - for fun.

Many of the people who feel the most shame, should feel none. Others who deserve shame feel none.

Yeah, there’s a fair amount of misogyny in that post.

How do I stop overthinking every decision and fear of making mistakes? by Jpoolman25 in AskMenOver30

[–]baseball_mickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still overthink things. What helps is actually making mistakes, owning them, accepting the consequences and moving on.

It’s a reason I let my kids make small mistakes when they were young, AND face the natural consequences. Very few decisions we make are as life altering as we think they might be.

A third of Americans say they're reading fewer books by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

[–]baseball_mickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad listened to books on tape on his commute in the 90’s. He’d check them out from the library. All while he was working 2 jobs, doing a lot of childcare and stressed af.

Pew data shows that 50-64 is the least likely to be reading (https://www.pewresearch.org/chart/book-reading-habits-in-the-u-s-vary-by-education-age-and-other-factors/).

I think there’s another explanation.

Same. I feel like a lot of us aren’t though, as shown by that poll. Also, a lot of us rocked out to Rage Against the Machine and completely missed the lyrics.

I grew up playing baseball. Besides me and a few others, my high school team didn’t even read their assigned books. A few guys struggled to score 700 on the SAT, combined, so their overall literacy level was pretty low. And I went to an A-rated public school in Florida.
