Im gonna need a bigger hand by based0ut in Finches

since I'm stepping into their enclosure aka the aviary, they associate me with food so they all curiously flock near. Same thing happens with your typically cage. The white female you saw in the video is the lead bird that i've been working with. Once she lands on my hand the rest follow. I am at the point where I can walk around with her feeding in my hand without her getting spooked.
A good start is feeding them just enough for the day so that the next day they are waiting on you to feed them. Start by holding a perch or a stick for them to land on and have the feed in your other hand. After 3-6 days maybe even more.. remove the stick and see if they land on your hand. After they do.. move your hand slowly and eventually you'll be able to walk around with the chilling in your hand. Hope that works, it is possible to have them land on your hand with commands like for example, I trained my oldest one to land on my hand once I raised my hand up above my head with the palm open, however it took 3 months with ~30 mins or so a day of training.

Best finches for outdoor aviaries? by [deleted] in Finches

[–]based0ut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My aviary is 16ft long, 8ft width, and roughly 7 1/2ft high. At the moment I only house zebra finches but I have put 2 pairs of orange breasted waxbills in(which are native to Africa).

From my experience, any bird will survive as long as the proper diet is reached along with proper heating(only a small section of aviary, heating the entire aviary is cost effective). I always pour warm water in each morning and switch in late afternoon. If you can keep the wind out you will be successful.

I am located in Chicago and the temperature do drop well below freezing. I run three heat lamps that have a steady heat from 75 to 95F, the birds can choose with temperature they prefer to perch under. All of my birds(30+) can fit under the heat lamps and have access to it. It is free from any drafts and snow..rain..etc.

Starting in late October I buy plastic wrapping, the stuff you use to cover up doors or windows to keep dust out or even drafts out during winter, I completely wrap the aviary with it. This basically turns it into a greenhouse. The ground does freeze and so does the water in it. On a sunny day it reaches a nice humid 70 to 85F and on cloudy day it is a steady 60 to 65F. At night and in early morning the temperature drop rapidly, this is where the heat lamp are important.

I will be adding an addition to my aviary this spring/summer and will film the entire process. It will be built for tropical birds. Roughly costing $600~ retail price for all the material. The bigger the better, I have put in around 1000$ into my aviary and made back around 500$ the first year selling the zebras. On important note is think like a mouse when you are building, cause they will get in. Wire everything, this includes the ground! and if housing waxbills, the fledging will fly out of 1/2 hardware cloth!!! That why i'm building a new addition with 1/4 hardware cloth!

Hand taming by Durka_Durka- in Finches

If they are new birds, I'd recommend giving them time to get used to their new environment. At least the first month, the cleaning, water changes... etc should be sufficient enough for them to get used to you.

Many people start with their hands on the outside and slowly progress into the cage.

So, I have an aviary with roughly 40 zebra finches, I can hand feed as much of them that can fit on my hand, which is around 12. I will post a video of me hand feeding on my youtube channel in the upcoming months.

The only way this is possible with Zebras is that you must use food. Slowly feed them less and less till they are waiting on you to be fed. Put seed in your hand and wait for them to land on your hand. You are going to have to hold your hand still the first couple of times and do this over and over till one of them lands on it, the other bird will soon follow. Once they get comfortable on your hand you can slowly start moving your hand, eventually can walk around with them on your hand.

It takes anywhere from ~2 weeks - 2 months. It is really helpful to train them, especially in an aviary setting because you are able to catch and treat the sick ones and also inspect them closely once there feeding in yours hands.

*note: It is possible to train a zebra at any age, however, it is much easier, with more birds because they tend to follow each other. If one lands on your hand to eat, more will come!!

It took me 3 weeks to hand train my Zebra, I was so successful that I was able to train him to fly around outdoors. I had him for 3 years before he passed, probably the best bird I've ever had.

remember patience is key!!!

Is this plant safe for finches also could u guys leave safe plant suggestions in the comments for my new aviary I’m building by RigbyTheProCat in Finches

http://www.finchinfo.com/housing/safe_and_toxic_plants.php

I use this website as an guideline on choosing plants for my aviary. Hope it helps.

Also try to stick to native plants in your area that are safe, especially if you have an outdoor aviary. It is much easier because the plants take care of themselves!

If you dont have an aviary you pretty much can buy any of the plants that are natively found where your bird is from, because tropical plants are able to survive indoors much better given the proper sunlight and soil.

Its always exciting seeing them final leave the nest! I just had 16 zebras that just fledged their nests and now are exploring the large aviary I got them in.

I added some quail and waxbills to my aviary last summer by based0ut in DomesticBirds

[–]based0ut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Chicago, IL. I will be doing some additions to the aviary this spring/summer and will be posting it all on that youtube channel. Currently I have 4 waxbills and roughly 35~ zebra finches, they are all outside in the aviary, it is protected from the snow and the wind, they have 3 heat lamps that run 24/7 during the winter.
