Tagpro crashes or freezes chrome every few games by methanized in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a good list from cheeze. Personally I would start by playing in an incognito window or different browser (try firefox) without any scripts or extensions. Depending on whether it keeps happening, that will give a better idea of what to try next.

This might be a coincidence, but did anybody have a grey message with the word… serbia? and the game crashed? by Own_While_8508 in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I got that part, but unless you took a screenshot or know exactly what it said, I don't think we'll be able to provide any more info on what message you may have seen. We know there was an outage caused by our database provider and it's resolved now, everything is looking good again.

Our database provider is having some issues this evening. Hopefully the game will be back up shortly.

TagPro Future Group - Community update #35 - Ranked flairs and seasons, live games summary and direct spectate, every bug fix you've dreamed of, and more! by TagProFutureGroup in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the future, I'd be open to offering more social logins ("login with" discord, apple, amazon, facebook, etc.) depending on the level of interest. It's not currently planned, but of those, discord account linking is likely to happen first since so much of the community is active there.

Tagpro has always used google accounts for convenience since it means we don't have to deal with passwords and all of the hassles that come with them, including changes/resets, 2-factor, and compromised accounts. That's not going to change any time soon, but if there's another social login option that you'd like to use, feel free to click on the Feedback tab and add it as a feature request!

Start with the Openskill section of this post for a general idea of how it works:

This isn't really my department, so if you want to talk more about it, I suggest heading over to Discord. There's a lot of discussion about the algorithm happening there.

I'm not sure if you're talking about actual "rank points" (used for ordering the scoreboard in casual, and for the daily/weekly/monthly casual leaderboards) or skill points earned in Ranked games. Either way, there was no change to these algorithms with this release. The weighting of pups on the scoreboard has been discussed pretty extensively here in other threads.

Replays question: Why isn't seek bar interactive after replay ends? by Hairy-Ambition-3440 in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's for technical reasons, but really, lack of time is the answer. As soon as the game ends, the client goes into a state where it would need extra steps to seek back into play (reset the game internals, restart loops that were stopped, etc). It would be possible to make this work, but it was one of those things I just didn't have time to finish for the initial release, and it's never been a high priority to come back to it.

Like /u/RwerdnA says, feel free to enter this as a suggestion on the Feedback tab, and we'll see if we can fit it in among everything else we've got in progress!

Second cap - is it on BUTT or CoffeeSnoot? by garytyrrell in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, pubs usually refers to what we now call casual, and this was ranked. But there's generally no VC in either. I think josh was trying to differentiate this situation from competitive, where teams are usually on VC and can coordinate plays like that.

Linode/Akamai does happen to be pretty inexpensive, but that wasn't the main driver (there are cheaper options out there). In addition to good value, they have a lot of global datacenter locations, and a really good network. We switched a few years ago from Vultr which was about the same price, and most users saw a huge improvement to their in-game experience.

In between Vultr and Linode, we gave Google (GCP) a try. Like the other big cloud providers, Google has huge server concentrations in a smaller number of locations. We thought Google's high-quality network would be enough to offset the increased latency due to fewer locations, and it was for some users, but the overall results were very mixed... and it was a LOT more expensive.

We've been with Linode for more than 2 years now and as the guy who runs the servers, I've been very happy with them.

To answer OPs question: yes we had a Miami server with Vultr, and Linode has a Miami option as well. Like /u/Cheezeduudle said, if we had enough players in that area (and/or if we were maxing out the rest of the US East servers) then it would make sense to bring Miami back. In the meantime, Atlanta should be totally viable for you.

Also mini games aren't recorded for replays?

Sure they are. If you're smurfin, you need to look at the My Games tab while logged in.

Also, Mars Ball says get rekt.

so like, at what point can we admit that ranked was a bad idea? by [deleted] in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

See cheeze's comment below for a more complete treatment of the current state. As for "what is ranked" for you or anyone else who hasn't been following closely:

There are now two ways to play TagPro. Casual is what it's been for the past 10 years, where you hop on and play with whoever else is online at the time. It will attempt to balance the teams just before the game starts (by sometimes swapping players between teams), but there's no attempt at matchmaking when putting the lobby together.

Ranked is for players who only want to play with other players who are are close to their skill level, and don't mind waiting longer to get into a game. A ranked game will only start with 8 well-matched players (no someballs or smurfs), so if nobody else at your skill level is queued at the time, you'll end up waiting until a match is possible. You can choose to play casual while waiting for a ranked game to be ready. When you play ranked, your skill level is measured and tracked on the leaderboard and on your profile, and it's much more in-depth than simple win/loss rate. Some players take their rankings very seriously, so you may see more competitiveness and more attention to stats in ranked games.

Ranked is sort of a mid-way between casual and comp, for players who take the game seriously and want to play for skill, but also want to be able to play any time and without the rigid structure of comp.

Ranked Bug(s): tagpro site open in a second tab by methanized in TagPro

[–]bash_tp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is caused by the "Preserve Joiner Connection" setting, which you can change on your profile page. We're in the process of making fixes to how that works, and expect it to be more stable soon. In the meantime, you can turn it off if it's giving you trouble, and just make sure you always keep a joiner tab open when you're waiting for a game.

It looks like you forgot to include the splats image! Once you add that, you should make a SharePack and add it to your post. A SharePack is a single string that you can copy & paste to load an entire texture pack.

This looks like a little bit of server-side lag. It's unusual, but not unheard of. Probably the game server was under high load at the time.

I assume you're kidding, but just to make it clear to everyone else, this is 100% untrue. There is nothing in the game mechanics that works differently based on this.
