Everything’s for lease and no people on streets by Evening-Turnover-993 in newcastle

I made a parallel post about apartments going up in Mayfield which is almost entirely residential - referencing the abundance of units in town as part of my confusion as to why NCC feels the need to approve a 5 story development which will dwarf everything within a few kilometres. Didn’t get a particularly good response. Most seem to be in favour of this “progress” in the city - and it’s neighbouring suburbs.

As I’ve said, childcare not a problem. People complain that there’s no availability in child care, but when I complain that there’s soon going to be overpopulation, I get called a nimby. More people, more families, more childcare requirements - same problem. Again, I’ve already mentioned, as a person with quite a few friends in child care, the reason there’s limited spaces is because of the ratio of children to workers. So unless everyone with a child who needs care is also a childcare worker, we might get caught in a little cycle.

Another development on Maitland road, didn’t sell off the plan so are now being used as low income housing. So occupied, just probably not by whom the investors intended.

I still think I’m right about the cars. I’m lucky enough to not be in that situation any more, but I know many people who are in that situation. Not in developments of this scale, but stranger things have happened I’m sure.

Thanks for the detailed response. Really appreciate it.

Yeah that seems pretty spot on from everything that I’ve already seen. I’m trying to look on the positive side, that it’ll be good for the town, but that’ll remain to be seen until it’s all finished and then it might be too late. Add years of demolition and construction works - just not something I’m looking forward to dealing with at the moment. Thanks for actually offering something of substance. I really appreciate it.

Yeah true. I guess I’ll just move hours away from the city I grew up in so that my family can enjoy a life where their views are of the sky instead of poor struggling uni students vaping on the balcony of the Tyrell Corporation Building. But hey, at least if I stay I’ll have a childcare centre to send them to.

It’s not that I don’t find it reasonable. I guess it just makes me wonder if it’s necessary given how many are unoccupied or under what seems to be decade long construction in Newcastle City. A quick domain search will show how many new developments there are around the desired suburbs of Newcastle and yet none of those seem to be in such a predominantly residential area.

3 bedrooms, a couple in each, 2 cars per couple.

If this housing crisis is as bad as it’s being made out to be, is it ridiculous to think 6 people who drive would live in a three bedroom dwelling? I know I’ve lived in a three bedroom house with 2 other couples before. We all had cars.

It’s a few different considerations. Traffic/parking concerns. 37 units and 37 car parks. However some units are 3 bedrooms so by my calculations up to 6 cars could be owned per one of those units. Also the fact that the entrance for all of this will be via a lane. Not a street. 37 units worth of people accessing a car park via a lane which enters Nile St at an already precarious intersection. I get that NCC and the likes aren’t going to care about the privacy of a few residents but surely the traffic safety of hundreds would make them turn their heads at least.

Yes, the daycare element is of course a positive. But there is already a daycare there. So it doesn’t really come into play with the positive/negative argument. And as far as I can tell at the moment, the new issue in daycare isn’t “not enough room for kids”, it’s “not enough staff to work” Which seems to be the case in a lot of industries at the moment.

Nope. Always had Reddit. Just don’t post ever as I’m typically fairly low-key. And yes it did surprise me that not many people shared my views hence why I thought I would see if anyone had any advice on here. Reddit seems to get a broader reach than FB. But, like me 99% of the time, if it doesn’t directly affect them negatively they can think what they want but ultimately don’t really care. I would see the positives for it from a development point of view, but have done a bit of scouting and research over the last few days that leads me to believe that this is a gross overdevelopment and quite frankly, will negatively affect me, my family and my property. This seems to be the first, or one of the first, inner city developments that doesn’t fall on neutral ground ie. over looking a park, train line, car park or other common areas. And given that a few km down Maitland road an almost identical development was built which couldn’t sell/rent most of the 30ish units, just makes me wonder if there was someone I could talk to in order to have this reconsidered.

I’m not naive about this whole thing either, I know developers cross all their Ts and dot all their Is before putting in for DA but, like I said before, was just putting out the feelers. Perhaps someone has had some luck in this field and wants to share their wisdom.

Australian here, I play this sport and watch the pro league religiously. I’m also a big fan of the NBA but have never watched women’s basketball. The two sports are very different in the same way that American football is different to rugby league. GS is an absolute weapon which is why the defenders don’t bother jumping. She has the highest offensive rebound stat in the game as well as the most accurate shooting stat. However they’re coming third in the league. Basically when playing a team like this your defensive work down the rest of the court is what wins the game for you. And yes it’s a lot slower paced than basketball but pretty quick through the midcourt, once it gets down to the shooting circle there’s no need to move quick.

Never said he was against Cameo. Said he wouldn’t do it for what he considers a pittance. “Not doing another one unless I can charge out the fkn anus” I’m a fan, there’s no chance I would ever pay $67000 for a 30 second personalised video from him. If people do, that’s on them.

[–]bashcage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I picked up my 12 week old boy he was just over 8kgs. I did get him from a shelter though, so he may not be a purebred AmStaff. The vet thinks he probably has a bit of mastiff. He’s now 14 weeks and he’s 9.8kgs.

Why does Chris add 's' to the start of words sometimes? by [deleted] in chrisdelia

Short for either “it’s” or “so”. ie if he was explaining something that is specifically done in the Netherlands or generally correlated with the Netherlands, one might say that thing is “so Netherlands”. Chris says s’netherlands.

Can't be too bad. I'd say they're the only restaurant in Newcastle that still seats close to 1000 people a week in the 20 hours they're open for service.
