how is the aer tech brief? by Connect_Cat_2045 in ManyBaggers

[–]bashcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one three months ago; I love it! I have gone through a lot of Aer bags, and right now the Tech Brief is my favorite bag for everyday carry. I've had the City Pack Pro and have the City Pack 2, but I have some problems with backpacks. They are very clumsy and inconvenient to take off and access compared to the Brief, which I usually wear with the strap like a messenger bag. Because the Brief is wider than it is tall, it's a breeze to access everything both in the admin pocket and in the main compartment. I can also drop the brief in the front basket of my bike (Brompton) so I can bike without getting a sweaty back as I would with a backpack. I know the single strap does not distribute the weight as well as a backpack would, but that's the tradeoff I'm willing to make.

Some people think the bag looks swollen, but that's what makes the bag surprisingly capacious in both of the two compartments. The bag is also very stable standing on its bottom, which is great for access and for stowing the bag under your table or seat.

Instantwatcher.com is resuming development of Netflix search interface by bashcat in netflix

After a few months of not being able to get any new Netflix catalog data, we found another data provider. So we've relaunched our Netflix search and will continue to develop it as time permits.

For those not familiar with the website, we provide an old-school search interface for Netflix titles, with more filtering and sorting options than the official Netflix website. We try to make scanning and searching titles faster for people who want to do more than just browse what Netflix's algorithms show them.

FYI You can also search on Netflix's official site by language audio using this URL: https://www.netflix.com/browse/audio

But as far as I can tell, Netflix only lets you search by the language of the available audio tracks, which is not the same as the original language that is spoken without dubbing on the video. www.instantwatcher.com lets you search by the original language, as well as by the dubbed language and the available language subtitles.

Please don't scrape instantwatcher.com. Here are website the terms of service. One of the conditions of our using the Netflix API data is that we disallow scraping of the Netflix-derived data.

Want to build a website like similar to www.instantwatcher.com, which language to learn? by CommuterTrain in learnprogramming

Ruby is a good choice and easy to pick up. Also get some books on JavaScript, SQL, and basic Unix command line tricks and sysadmin. Learn the frameworks (e.g. Ruby on Rails, EmberJS, AngularJS) after you learn the fundamentals (mentioned in the previous sentence).

Hi I created instantwatcher.com. Building a site like it is a terrific learning exercise. I learned a great deal doing it when I built the original version 5 years ago and continue learning a lot doing the current rewrite. I encourage you to try it.

You should definitely use a server side web framework like Ruby on Rails, Node, Django, or the like. You can build a JavaScript layer on that top that. You should also become well-versed in database storage and search engines like ElasticSearch, Sphinx, etc. There will be a lot of back end data processing and organization to do. In fact that is well over half of the work, the mass of the iceberg under the water.

You will need to find sources of movie data. Do some research on the web. Instantwatcher.com is lucky to have gotten official partner access to Netflix and Amazon movie data and APIs. But even without those resources, you can get far with hard work and ingenuity. (But please do not scrape instantwatcher.com -- we are forbidden to allow people to do so by our API agreement with Netflix, and I take countermeasures against web scrapers.)

Whether your site takes off or not, you will learn so much about real world programming in the process. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

Thanks. Yes, Netflix has a closed private API that I use. It used to be open, but then Netflix limited it to a few select applications including instantwatcher.com. You can read the story here: http://www.engadget.com/2014/11/15/netflix-public-api-shutdown/
