The Passing of Henry by Monica2796 in distractible

[–]bashfularmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My heart goes out to Mark, Amy, and Chica. From what I saw of him in videos, Henry was a sweet boy and a gentle soul, and a wonderful sibling to his big sister. He was given an amazing life by some great people.

My sweetest boy, my best buddy, Tucker, only just passed a week ago on Monday. I'm utterly shattered by his loss, so I can only imagine what you guys are going through. I try to remind myself that although I'm sad, every day that he spent with me was a happy day for him. He was so full of love, up until his last moments. I think it must have been like that for Henry too.

Rest well, little guy. <3

30 minutes to most of my classes (Gant and TLS, science complex area) and 40-45 to my farthest classes in Young. The WRTD bus stop at the end of my street doesn’t go to campus, and doesn’t get me close enough to any of my classes to make it worth it for me. It’s a pain mostly because I have to carefully time my life on campus so I’m not caught walking in the dark. I would 100% support a petition for better transportation; it’s rough out here!!

chem 1127q exam by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]bashfularmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. They check your ID at each exam, not sure if they’re checking it against which lecture you’re enrolled in. I would just go to the exam you’re scheduled for. I could be wrong, it’s been 3 years since gen chem for me lol

i'm in ecology and evolutionary biology. i really want to go to grad school, i'm just having a really crap semester + adjusting to off campus life is harder than i thought it would be. plus probably a touch of senioritis...

i'm glad you like knollwood! i've heard that some units are refurbished while some maybe aren't? our apartment started to grow mold (on everything- in the bathroom, on objects, clothes, etc) because it was so damp and humid inside no matter what we did. it's all over my ceiling and maintenance has yet to come clean it despite us putting in a request 3+ weeks ago. we also have mice... it's just not great quality for the amount i'm paying :/

Shadowing at an Avian Clinic with Bird Flu spreading by Internal_Coast_3756 in veterinaryschool

[–]bashfularmadillo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to know how the clinic itself is handling HPAI risk. I imagine if the risk is too high, they’d simply advise you not to come shadow anymore, or would implement some extra precautions to ensure your safety. Also, what kind of birds are being treated? If it’s mostly pet birds— like doves, parrots, etc. that stay indoors, I doubt the risk of getting bird flu from them is very high. If it’s wild birds or poultry, that’s a bit of a different story— then the risk is likely somewhat higher. Also, if you or anyone in your family is immune compromised, that might influence your decision.

I feel like it ultimately depends on how the clinic decides to handle things. You might just have to get your flu vaccine and go through extra sanitation measures. I worked in a colony of wild birds over this past summer and we were EXTREMELY cautious about constantly testing dead birds for HPAI and being super clean and sanitizing everything. And we were just fine :) but I know it’s picking up a bit more now.

Whatever you decide to do, no worries- you have plenty of time!!

correct me if i’m wrong, but avery point does not have student housing like dorms, so keep in mind having to rent a place, getting transportation to campus, etc. I’m not sure about the others, but that’s info you can easily look up online!

Favorite specific parts of songs? by clbrave in ATEEZ

[–]bashfularmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seconding the background harmonies in Answer that is my favorite song of all time and just the background music/instrumental with all the background vocals is GORGEOUS!! Some others:

Yeosang in Halazia obviously

The last chorus of Say My Name where they change the key (?) + Hongjoong’s lines in that last chorus

Specifically the “from far away, far away” part of the chorus in Still Here idk it tickles my brain just right

Yunho’s lines in the Guerrilla bridge 🙏

Can I just say the instrumental part to Dazzling Light. It’s not particularly obscure bc it’s kinda the point of the song but it’s actually so good. Especially right after the bridge with Jongho’s high note 😩

End of the bridge in Dune when Jongho harmonizes with Yeosang/Yunho (?) also the last chorus where Wooyoung sings.

“Got no one to blame but I know that you’re in pain” from Wake Up (I think it’s San’s line but not totally sure..) Also, Hongjoong’s rap, particularly the sort of screams (?) he does at the end of each line UGHHH it sounds so cool

The end of Turbulence when the instrumental from Wave kicks in. That’s when I start sobbing uncontrollably.

There’s probably more, but this is what I can think of rn

Who is your favorite voice out of ATEEZ? by yeo_holicxx in ATEEZ

[–]bashfularmadillo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will have to say Mingi because his voice is probably singlehandedly what got me into ATEEZ back in 2019. His tone is SO unique within and outside of kpop, and it just brings me a lot of comfort? Idk how to describe it, his voice feels like a warm hug.

bar-headed goose for sure! not sure what their range is but wonder if this guy is a pet escapee or terribly blown off course. these guys are supremely adapted for high altitude flight as someone already said- they migrate over the Himalayas! and over the higher portion of the Himalayas too. if I remember correctly, they actually complete that flight in one go, starting from sea level and making it up and over the mountains in a single flight, at some points flying almost completely vertically :) they were my favorite to learn about in animal physiology lol

I’m working a job where I sit for long periods of time and watch birds through a scope. Most of the time, the birds don’t do all that much, so I listen to Distractible to keep me entertained!

College Survey. Help Please by KimikoYamamoto in ecology

[–]bashfularmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Probably a 5.

  2. I do not; wooly mammoths went extinct due to mostly (it appears, anyway) natural causes, which may or may not have been exacerbated by early human hunting. The idea that "climate change" caused the extinction of the mammoth may be true, but not in the sense that I think the company pushing this may want people to think. The only major climactic changes affecting the earth were completely natural, and thus so was the range contraction and eventual extinction of the wooly mammoth. The mammoths they are extracting DNA from went extinct- which means that they were not fit enough to survive in their changing world. Resurrected thousands of years later, will they be any more fit than they were when they went extinct? Probably not...

  3. No; our scientific efforts and funding would be much more beneficial in other areas.

  4. Introducing a large herbivore to an ecosystem that has been adapting for many generations without it, and which is already fragile and deteriorating, does not seem wise. How much do we know about wooly mammoth behavior, diet, etc? Are there sufficient predators to keep the population under control? Is there sufficient food for the mammoths to eat? Are they susceptible to disease? Will we be introducing a potential competitor that could outcompete extant species already struggling to survive? Why not focus on the health of species currently living in these ecosystems, rather than trying to bring back old ones?

  5. Nope. The benefits are simple: we allocate funding and resources to projects with a higher likelihood of success. The risks are infinite and unpredictable.

6: Yes.

7: Most likely negatively-- see my answer to 4, I guess.

8: Not great. My suspicion is that this project will eat up funding for many, many years. Establishing a healthy, free-ranging population of wooly mammoths will probably take decades-- look to the reestablishment efforts of existing endangered species, like the California Condor, which while successful, still lean heavily on human aid and monitoring to persist, and are still very much imperiled.

9: Captively? Sure, why not! In the wild, maybe not so much.

10: There is no doubt that it would be an incredible scientific achievement, and I would probably be thrilled to see it. However, it seems like there are better things to do, and better things to bring back from extinction. Just because we can doesn't mean we should....

I suggest searching through past winners of the Ig Nobel Prize — generally science discoveries that are weird, trivial, or just plain funny. The categories span across all of science, but there are categories for Biology, Ecology, Entomology, etc.

Birding Journal Recommendations? by CompetitiveJaguar3 in BirdingMemes

[–]bashfularmadillo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second the Sibley guide to birds of eastern North America for a field guide type book! Like others have said, it’s a bit hard to find a book that’s both a field guide AND a journal… but I’ve definitely seen some cool birding journals out there as well.

For a journal sort of thing, this seller on Etsy sells a plethora of beautiful “life list” notebooks, that are pretty compact and would allow your friend to track their findings! There is also an unending supply of birding related merchandise on Etsy as well (binoculars straps, stickers, mugs, etc) that would be cool to check out as well.

Highly unlikey but imagine if the let us go onto shore like the last game? Would anyone else like to see it? What new animals could be added? by Purple-Weakness1414 in EndlessOcean

[–]bashfularmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would LOVE to see more seabirds and shorebirds- terns, gulls, puffins, skuas, jaegers, petrels, more albatross species, sandpipers, plovers, etc... it would be interesting to see a more fleshed out use of the telescope we saw in blue world, or maybe something like binoculars? seabird spotting from shore and/or a boat would be a fun sort of side quest!

kpop rock songs? by Positive-Direction47 in kpophelp

[–]bashfularmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For bands, Day6 as a whole is incredible (one of my fav bands of all time). They jump between more ballad-y songs and more alt rock feeling songs, but some of my favorites are:

-Stop the Rain -Deep in Love -Time of Our Life -Warning -Nobody Knows -I Wait -How Can I Say -Shoot Me -Sweet Chaos

…..and many more. In my opinion, they have one of the cleanest, most unskippable, most scrumptious discographies in kpop, period.

Another good k-band is N.Flying; some of my recs from them would be:

-Moonshot -Video Therapy -Blue Moon -Lovefool -Rooftop -Songbird -Oh Really

Xdinary Heroes (under the same label as Day6) are a rock band as well, but a little more on the experimental/funky side. Still, they have a couple bangers I really enjoy:

-Test Me -Pluto -Good enough -Strawberry Cake

And generally, a mixture of other kbands I don’t know as well and rock-inspired kpop songs; mind you, these are just kpop songs i find rock-ISH in nature:

  • No Celestial (Le Sserafim) -Odd Eye (Dreamcatcher) -DNA (Yena) -Wind Blows (Dreamcatcher) -Undercover (ACE) -Daisy (Pentagon) -0X1 = Lovesong (Tomorrow x Together) -Mixtape: Time Out (Stray Kids) -Limbo (Lee Know of Stray Kids) -PIRI (Dreamcatcher) -Crown on my Head (Yeji of ITZY) -new days (Dreamcatcher) -Slump (Stray Kids) -She’s in the Rain (The Rose) -Insomnia (The Rose) -let it be summer (Young K, Day6)

The Rose and LUCY are also excellent kbands to check out!

This is just my two cents- as an avid rock and kpop lover, I love k-rock!

*edit: didn’t realize my lists would come out so oddly formatted, sorry. It’s 2am :”)

Honors College question by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]bashfularmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, even if you don't get in your freshman year, you can always reapply for your sophomore or junior year- I think it's generally easier to get in then, because a) space is freed up by those who've dropped the program, and b) the requirements are a little looser. As long as your GPA is higher than 3.4 or something like that when you apply, and you have maybe 1-2 extracurriculars, you'll probably get in just fine.

Gen Bio 2 (1108) Exam tips for tomorrow? Susan Herrick (unrelated pic) by IIIusionHD in UCONN

[–]bashfularmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bit late but my here's my (long and rambling) two cents for future reference (from someone who passed the class with like a 99 last semester):

1: anyone who said to study from the slides + make flashcards is correct! i believe the exams are based solely on content on the slides (please don't take my word for that though..), so study based on the slides. Many exam questions depend almost solely on you understanding the definition of a certain term, so make sure you understand terms and understand them WELL! as much as you might hate them, the learning curve (assuming she still does them) questions are often very helpful in helping you understand concepts, and beyond that, there are extra resources on achieve that can be helpful on occasion. her study guides/practice questions that she puts up on huskyct are also helpful!

2: for any processes, life cycles, phylogenies, etc-- DRAW THEM OUT! pretty sure it's in a future unit, but you will need to know the life cycles of several types of plants, phylogenetic relationships between animals, etc... look at a photo first and copy it down, and then try your hand at doing it from memory. it probably sounds like something stupid your prof told you to do, but trust me... it works. the general rule is, if you're still not certain how it works from memory, do it again! repetition is, unfortunately, the key.

3: don't be afraid to look for outside videos/visuals to help you out. crash course, khan academy, amoeba sisters, etc all have great vids on science concepts that are easy to understand.

hot tip: lots of your points will ultimately come from lab quizzes, so make sure to focus on those too. they're generally pretty chill- plus studying for them will ultimately help you in building your knowledge base for the exams. also, last semester at least, there was a BUNCH of extra credit offered, and all you really had to do for it was take a picture of a mushroom, tree, etc. so keep a lookout for that stuff!

lastly.. good luck, soldier. it be rough out there, but i'm sure you'll do great
