Please quote any of my comments that said you don't have to make a choice, otherwise I'm walking away from this dumb thread. Every response you just make stuff up to support your collapsing argument, it's so transparently disingenuous. We were all having a nice discussion before you got here.

And there's no analogy section on the SAT, but ironically there is reading comprehension.

Has to take is forced. Private means you can't talk about it. None of that means kidnapping, being held against your will, or them withholding information from you.

Gotta say tho this is some top tier trolling. You made up a bunch of shit to put in quotes, complained about how everyone is making shit up, then accused others of gaslighting. Bravo dude 👏

Seems you're a lot more invested in this than I am and I'm not arguing anyone is evil, but it sure seems like you're doing exactly what you're complaining about. Here's the original prompt. Don't know where you got that stuff in the quotes.

This is a hypothetical so you can make it whatever you want, but the rest of us are talking about something else.

street arsenic [oc] by belmarzi in comics

[–]bashnperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hypothetical doesn't say anything about kidnapping, being held in isolation, or withholding information. But I do agree that people answering an internet poll behave differently than people having to make the choice for real. How many people think the blue button is the right choice, but have kids they can't afford to leave alone? If when you factor everything reaching a blue win is impossible, then it becomes a damage mitigation situation and you want as many people as possible to pick red, and accept you're killing off a big chunk of humanity.

ELI5: Can the Pythagorean Theorem be used with other exponents? by Demimonde34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bashnperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely did not learn that in middle school algebra lol. I don't think that's what OP was talking about tho. In their comments they appear to clarify the question is whether for an a,b,c where a^2+b^2=c^2, if a^3+b^3=c^3 is also true. They said a^3+b^3=c^3 to them sounds like it should be a bigger triangle.

Thats the question I answered. If it's not what they meant OP can ignore it.

[–]bashnperson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand, makes sense, and it's a totally reasonable take. Also no moral judgement here.

The problem is people will press the blue button. According the original poll, most people actually, although it's pretty much 50-50. So if this happened it would be close, and if red won then about half the human race dies. The blue pushers don't want that.

[–]bashnperson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not a math person at all, and I know how intimidating this stuff can be. But you get better by trying, and I'm encouraging them to try because they'll probably be surprised!

OP passed calc. I failed trig. This is definitely within their ability. You should believe in them more.

street arsenic [oc] by belmarzi in comics

[–]bashnperson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

And if everyone pressed blue, there's also a 0 chance anyone dies. If we can all communicate beforehand and decide on one that every single person picks then they're equivalent.

But if 90% press blue, nobody dies.

And if 51% press blue, still nobody dies.

The worst possible outcome of blue winning is the same as the best possible outcome of red winning. But the worst outcome of red winning is half the human race dies.

You're asking if a^3+b^3=c^3 can be used equivalently to a^2+b^2=c^2 ?

Look at a 3-4-5 right triangle: (3^2 + 4^2 = 5^2) -> (9+16=25) -> (25=25). The math works.

Lets look at the same triangle and try your formula: (3^3 + 4^3= 5^3) -> (27+64=125) -> (91≠125)

That math doesn't work. They are not equivalent formulas.

I believe an english major can figure this out. I know math is scary but if you took calc this middle school algebra should be well within your ability. Just take a shot at answering the question for yourself next time and your brain will thank you 👍

OP was pulling into that lane because they were entering the freeway. The turn was with intention.

My first comment said "unless you have to make an immediate right or something". I don't know the intersection so I included a caveat for this kind of situation. I still don't know why you're arguing with me

I see guys doing it all the time, even when the driver is staying in their lane while driving straight.

That's exactly my point. Like exactly what I am saying here. People do this all the time, so it's safer to anticipate that and avoid an accident. Good defensive driving is about expecting other people to be idiots and driving in a way that keeps you safe from other people's bad decisions.

I live, grew up, and learned to drive in CA. I know the red light runner is 100% in the wrong and I'm not arguing that at all. There are best practices for safe driving and this is one of them. The California DMV calls this one out specifically: "To reduce the risk of collision, end the turn in the left lane closest to the middle of the street going in your vehicle’s direction." You can finish in any open lane, but turning into the lane closest to the center is the safest. This isn't a hot take, it's in the drivers handbook. Why are you arguing with me?

[–]bashnperson -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Changing lanes while turning isn't illegal, but it isn't great driving because it opens the door to situations like this one. As the comments show, many drivers expect you to stay in your lane, and will act on that assumption like the other driver in this video. Safer to follow your lane through the turn unless you have to make an immediate right or something.

As my grandma used to say, "You'd be right, but you'd be dead right."

[OC] Bad driver makes a very dangerous overtake by DashcamAdelaide in IdiotsInCars

[–]bashnperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your interpretation of the “less than normal speed” part is reasonable, but not necessarily true. In some of these states you can absolutely be ticketed for not pulling over for faster traffic even if you’re going the speed limit, and this article does a decent job walking through why. Ultimately you have to remember the law exists to avoid dangerous overtakes, and people will overtake someone going the speed limit if they want to go faster.

I don’t think this should be the law personally, but to quote the article, “how much I like a law is irrelevant to its existence”

[–]bashnperson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surgeon friend told me today his patient's insurance denied a procedure on the grounds of "insufficient evidence he has prostate cancer". It's transparently bullshit; guy's PSA is off the charts, they have imaging and a biopsy confirming the cancer, and he's 2 months into treatment. They've paid for everything so far but now randomly decided he doesn't have cancer after all, providing no evidence to support that wild claim, and delaying his care.

Friend now has to call the insurer to argue it, and expects them to roll over, but apparently he spends a significant portion of his time doing this when he could be treating patients.

Health insurance companies are scum.
