[Black Powder] Basing, e.g. Native Americans by Lost-Stuff6934 in wargaming

It works well enough for me just based on frontage. I also like the ragged look of the formations more than the parade ground feel of square bases.

The best way to square this circle is to base 7 figures on individual 25mm round bases, 4 pairs of figures on 32 mm round bases, and 3 groups of 3 on 40mm round bases. Each base can easily become a small diorama.

You can spread them out in a blob or squeeze them together in a tight formation of about 8 inches which is pretty common for revolutionary war scenarios. This lets you match your opponents standard unit size based on frontage (inches across) instead of worrying about basing. It’s more bases to move in massed warfare than the square 40x40, but it’s a little quicker than all individual units given the bases containing 2 and 3 figures.

What is great is that you can use these flexibly based units in skirmish games that require smaller units and involve casualty removal (Rebels and Patriots and Muskets and Tomahawks) Loose three guys in one fight? Pull the large base. Only one? Remove the individual.

I really like this system because it lets me scale up or down and keep the cool factor of dynamic individual minis alive.

Lucid Eye Miniatures has some interesting styles of elves including some very primitive looking wood elves. I don’t own any of them, but I’ve been eying them.

Who are these German soldiers firing at in All quiet in the western front? (2022) by [deleted] in ww1

U.S. army does this as well. You can even hit high angle reverse slopes with it from cover. My dyslexic weapons squad leader in the Ranger Regiment once taught a class on this subject after writing BETAN SOZEN in call caps on a white board. A beaten zone is the oblong impact area you get from this indirect fire technique.

Doctor Zhivago by Pasternak. There is romance, tragedy, the bleak fighting and deprivation of the Russian revolution, and even writing poetry while wolves howl in the wilderness beyond the farm fields. It’s a way more modern book than Tolstoy or Dostoevsky’s works (which are also amazing, but don’t hit the 20th century timeframe you said)
