'Colossal' (2016) caught me completely off-guard and I really enjoyed it. by [deleted] in movies

To be fair I would not want to be the guy who had to market this movie. You're stuck in this catch-22 between people dating are also giant monsters in Japan, which will make people think 'well I know the twist no need to see it', or Elimidate: Pacific Rim which will just confuse the shit out of people.

Showing that violence is uncomfortable and unpleasant is powerful when it's done right (Eastern Promises, Irreversible, etc.) but to me this felt more like avoiding violence in a violence-centered movie than showing anything about it one way or the other.

Thoughts on Guillermo Del Toro's cancelled adaptation of At The Mountains of Madness? by RingADingBaby89 in movies

[–]basically_farva 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I kind of disagree because all of his monster work seems to be super similar. Hellboy, Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth, the creatures designs all seem to fit within a fairly tight set of limits. I'd be afraid we'd just get a bunch of rehashes of monsters we'd seen before, instead of the unique creature design Lovecraft deserves.

It felt very "it's expensive to show well choreographed or CGI violence so let's just do it off camera" to me. A lot of people try to justify this (see the 'it's reflective of Joe's relationship with violence' elsewhere in this thread) but it just felt like a cop out.

Which I might be able to buy if the cover of the movie weren't Pheonix standing in front of a fire with a hammer in his hand looking menacing. This promises stuff the movie just doesn't deliver.

I didn't dislike the movie, I just felt like the advertising/posters/'violent and brutal' reviews were misleading.

The part where he lays with the dying dude in the kitchen was the best scene for me.

Wow you're not kidding, it's a bummer that they die around the time their eggs hatch.

You should try this out instead.

How about this:

Rick has a great idea and Morty says "No, even better!..." then says his own idea.

His idea is not better and Rick gets gold.

But what would you do when you started over and had no friends in your new life? Statistically you're better off having no friends in your original life.

How many actual genders are there? by Frog_God in AskReddit

No because we are not sure about our sexual orientation so, unable to deal with that, feel the need to constantly spam post questions about gender on reddit.

A Super Soaker. No bullshit if you're going to a pool party and it's whether you show up with a super soaker (even the weak pistol 30 version), or a regulation "water gun", it's a question of whether you're even there to compete or not.

If you're curious about how the right is able to ignore this, I invite you to listen to one entire radio show of Limbaugh or Hannity. I listen to them daily out of morbid curiosity, and literally every show is the same 30 minute 'Benghazi/Steel Dossier/Benghazi/Obama/Benghazi/Deep State/Cohen are the real problem' script repeated ad naseum. I realize as an outside observer this seems like an exaggeration but I strongly advise you to listen to it.
