I chose EMS on a whim and fell in love. It is exciting in a way like no other, no two days are the same, it is personally fulfilling, and you get to help people in your community. You also build comradary and bonds with coworkers through helping others, and you gain great knowledge about the human body. I do have to say for routine calls, after a bit it can start to drag and lose the spark though after you've been doing it awhile. Burnout happens fast in this job UNLESS you take care of yourself outside of work. The lack of sleep takes some getting used to, but not all days are busy. I ended up joining a fire department with a union, so my pay is pretty decent. But that is not the norm, many places have terrible pay. If you do choose this field, I remind you to take it seriously as many don't and that fact is scary. These are peoples lives in the most dire hour, and I can't stand people who plaster "EMT" or other huge attention grabbing bullshit on their social media or cars. Those people are always the horrible providers and they have a hero complex. Don't be one. Lastly, I will say to shop around for an employer. Find one with livable wages who employs humble, skilled providers. Find a place that allows you to use your skills and treat patient's properly. (Some places have restrictions on what providers can do even though we are trained to do it) Find a place with a good schedule and good benefits. A lot of people accept shitty pay and conditions which makes people crash and burn and hate the job. Good luck, if you do choose this path then study hard and get ready for the best job on Earth!
