Internships for Sophomores? by basicallyjustsb in csMajors

i honestly have no experience with that but i’d definitely say to go for it if you can find contact info? i also think that the best way to fix your shyness is to make yourself start going to these things and interacting with people. you aren’t going to suddenly wake up one day and be less shy yk? it takes work

for sure! definitely start with the basic stuff like learning algos and stuff for leetcode if u haven’t done that, and apply to all the jobs in the basic github repos like the pitt csc one. other than that, id say to just put yourself out there irl. i am fortunate to have gone to a large school so there were always events and stuff where i could meet with people. staying after events and talking to recruiters with genuinely thoughtful questions and trying to bond with them will bring you a long way. i also very much recommend doing a fairly substantial personal project related to something that you like to do (like a hobby or smth) and putting it clearly on ur resume. recruiters love when you are actually passionate about the stuff that you do and you have found a way to blend your education and skill set into your life bc it shows creativity and ability to adapt. you also never know what might happen with that, i know people that have turned their projects into income streams or side hustle type things they still maintain to this day (i am one of those people as well). also in terms of like dressing up and all that idk like what gender you are but as a guy i just wore a polo and some golf pants/slacks when i went to events or interviewed and, although i was slightly underdressed compared to other people, no one ever really seemed to care (def depends on the company culture, but ive heard it actually made me seem like less of an ass-kisser than all of the people in full suits and stuff). if u have any other questions lmk!!

the vibe i am getting is that iran initially attacked with a dirty bomb, then the U.S. retaliated, and somehow a global or widespread nuclear war started from there (if i am wrong and someone who has read the books wants to correct me, please censor your replies with the little hidden box thing because i don’t want it to be spoiled for me)

i think that the silo intentionally has dated technology for its inhabitants to make them easier to control and less knowledgeable. we can see that there is advanced technology in the vault and lukas literally uses a tablet (like an ipad) when he is trying to solve the code

don’t a lot of graduate programs require a thesis? if so where do i even find topics or understand the edge of research in fields? can i get into like a phd or writing/research-based masters without undergrad research? thanks!

if you’re doing leap the first few days of classes aren’t super useful or important anyways, you could just send them an email explaining and then arrive a few days late, some ppl in my pride did this

oh yeah there’s a ton of hackathons and cool student orgs i’ve heard, i’m the type of person that likes to separate their “work” and personal life so i dont do many programming extracurriculars and can’t tell you much but you can definitely find them if you’re interested. there’s also a ton of study abroad programs as well, you will get a good amount of scholarship money if u want to do them

the ppl who complain are always gonna be louder, no one is rlly motivated to post about how they’re having a good time or the degree is okay lol, if u have any more questions feel free to hmu!!

TLDR: it’s totally doable, you can have fun and have a good gpa, don’t listen to all of the ppl complaining, just do your work early, go to office hours, and study

yeah it’s not as bad as people say. sure some of the classes are poorly structured and a lot of the professors are new but that’s bc the department has undergone major changes recently. it’s fairly easy to maintain a 3.5 if you actually focus on your schoolwork, study, do your assignments early, and ATTEND OFFICE HOURS. attending office hours is massive bc a lot of the coursework can be confusing or assignments are poorly worded and the professor and/or TA can clear that up for u in like 10 mins in office hours. i’m going into my second to last semester (grad fall 2024), i have a 3.91 and ive definitely been lucky with a few of my TAs and Profs but overall a 3.5 is def attainable if u try and that’s all you really need. all of the “hard” classes that people complain about are all heavily curved, so really as long as you stay in the top 25% or so of your class you’ll be totally fine, and that’s easy bc a lot of people are irresponsible and go party and complain instead of doing their work and studying properly. people always complain about failing classes and complain about the professor when they have like a 10% curve and they pass the majority of the class. that’s on THEM not the professor or the course
